Police caught the Pine Street boy after a chase and charged him with robbery and obstruction of a governmental function in connection with the 12:03 a.m. attack on the 22-year-old Communipaw Avenue man, officials said.
Police responding to the robbery near Whiton Street put the victim in a squad car and cruised around the area until the boy was spotted at Lafayette and Woodward streets, reports said.
When an officer approached him the boy took off running, but was captured with the help of other officers, reports said.
The victim said he was jumped by the boy and three others who punched and kicked him in the head before taking the backpack that contained two books, a pair of shorts and his wallet, which contained identification and credit cards, reports said.
Police later found the pack, books and shorts scattered near the robbery site, reports said.
The victim sustained scrapes, bumps and bruises during the beating, but refused medical attention, officials said.
