This is a good country for foreigners; that is when they murder. There are numerous stories of foreigners hopping on a last minute flight (back) to "their country" or as my grandparents used to say "the old country"

JJournal: Police investigating Jersey City Buildings Division

Police investigating Jersey City Buildings Division

The Jersey City Division of Buildings is under investigation by the Police Department, which has spent three days reviewing records and copying checks and documents, Police Chief Tom Comey confirmed today.

Neither the public nor employees were allowed access to the Buildings Division office, at 30 Montgomery St., for several hours in the morning on Friday, Monday and yesterday so that police officers from the Special Investigations Unit could conduct their investigation, Comey said.

Comey would not comment on the specific nature of the investigation, nor would he say if any money, checks or documents were discovered missing. He also would not say what prompted the investigation.

?Right now I can only say that the Special Investigations Unit is handling the situation,? Comey said.

The Buildings Division, which is part of the Department of Housing, Economic Development and Commerce, is in charge of issuing building permits and certificates of occupancy and also is in charge of all building inspections.

One contractor said when he arrived at 30 Montgomery St. Friday morning to conduct some business he was told no one was being allowed in the buildings offices and a number of inspectors who arrived for work and could not get into their offices were milling around in the lobby.

City spokesman Stan H. Eason said the division is also undergoing a reorganization under the supervision of Director Ray Meyer.

Escaped convicts on loose
State corrections officials are seeking the public?s help in tracking down two Hudson County convicts who escaped from a Newark halfway house this week, officials told The Jersey Journal this morning.

Famar McGoy, 27, of Lexington Avenue in Jersey City, was last seen at the Kintock halfway house in Newark on Tuesday, and Jermaine Mitchell, 26, of Stegman Street in Jersey City, was last seen there Monday, state corrections officials said.

McGoy was in custody from March 22, 2002, to Jan. 9, 2003, and March 11, 2005, to Tuesday on three convictions for drug distribution and one for theft, officials said.

Mitchell was in custody from Sept. 15, 2005, to Monday on a convictions for dealing drugs, officials said.

If charged with the escape, the men may find themselves spending an extra five years behind bars, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

Anyone with information on either fugitive?s whereabouts is asked to call the State Department of Corrections Special Investigation Unit -- Fugitive Unit at 1-800-523-3829.

JJournal: Reservoir No. 3 will be preserved as open space

Reservoir No. 3 will be preserved as open space

Ending years of debate, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy declared today that Reservoir No.3 will be preserved for passive recreation.

"This thing has been debated for a long time, an issue that has endured through many administrations. But now the time is right to decide its future," said Healy.

The conceptual plan for the reservoir, on Summit Avenue in the Heights, includes a fishing pier, canoe dock and an elevated jogging path that hugs the inside of the massive stone walls that surround the site.

"This is a great day," said Steve Latham, president of the Jersey City Reservoir Preservation Alliance, a group that has fought for passive recreation at the site for years.

However, the news wasn't great for everybody.

Joseph Napolitano, executive director of the Babe Ruth League at Pershing Field, said he will wait and see if kids use the site before passing judgment.

"I don't know if kids will use it, but I will be watching," said Napolitano. "But what I do know is I turned down 500 kids last year for the league, and who knows where these kids went, maybe the streets."

Someone just told me they gave him $20 after he said it would go to "people affected by Katrina in the South". I bet a lot more people will come out saying this.

I knew Khaddy when he was really young. I remember he was a little Dominican who was really into computers, and in the 4th grade when all the classrooms started getting computers, he would mess with it on and on and the teacher would let him because he was the only one that knew how to work the thing. I guess over the years he trained himself on how to put his skills into good use. He went to dickinson but dropped out after he got arrested for the BMW. I would NEVER think he would become a criminal.
