Philadelphia has an additional firefighter on each ladder company and two additional firefighters on there squad company. In order for Jersey City to be staffed like Philadelphia you would have to increase there total firefighters by 80. Philadelphia has an officer to firefighter ratio of 3.2. Jersey City is not to far off.

I do believe they should look into making staff positions filled by firefighters instead of Captains. That would be a savings and by bringing Lieutenants back would also reduce the jump of 30% from firefighter to captain. These are two reasonable changes.

Those two savings would not compromise the safety of the people of Jersey City!

Hudson County Fire Department! This would be beneficial to the residents of Hudson County. As long as they do not create the disaster in North Hudson. Savings would come with the reduction of Chief of the Departments from 6-1. Also the closing of firehouses that border other cities. Consolidation of Companies into larger modern houses. The savings would not be dramatic, but it will ease the burden on the taxpayers.

Three of those firehouses were active not too long ago..

Boyd Ave- housed engine 17 & ladder 11..

Central Ave- housed engine 18**

**Both Firehouses were going to be renovated, but I guess due to the times they can't keep these old firehouses running.

The Summit Ave firehouse also housed the Arson Units.

As a male bartender i understand how hard it is to find a job. I have worked in the same place for five years and went from bus boy to food runner to back bar to now bartender. So i would consider myself kinda lucky. I go to alot of bars downtown and i could care less if the bartender is hot. And this is coming from a single college student. Service is the only thing i am ever worried about.

Wawa left the New York Metropolitan Area in the late 90s because they could not compete with the competition. Most Wawa's today are gas stations also. They still operate in central and south Jersey. Wawa is the best when it comes to prices and its fresh sandwiches 24/7. I would love to see like a 7- Eleven Downtown. Journal Square just opened one and I just noticed one opening in the Union Sq neighborhood. I feel like a 7- Eleven could be more of a reality.

Seems like the construction has been delayed by the whole ground contamination thing... the empty space between the towers is a Superfund site. Once they get the chromium out of the soil things might get back on track, but who knows at that point?

Pretty much anything would look better than the fenced-off concrete slab that's there now.

Yeah it was a big dream. I wouldn't even mind if they would just clean-up the contaminated soil and just pave a parking lot.

A good location would be the new tower at Metropolis (Between Marin and Warren). The approved project calls for 40,000 sq feet in Retail. It will be facing Columbus at the street. That would be much more appealing than the suburban super market like Shop Rite & BJ's.

The only problems are:

-project does not look like it will get off the ground for awhile.
-40,000 sq feet will be too small for a trader joes.

I can dream i guess.

NFPA 1710: Standard for Staffing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Kay3VsEXDY

"if a fire captain on average manages 10 people in the US".

Show me where a first level officer manages 10 people. The Incident Command System requires that any single person's span of control should be between three and seven individuals, with five being ideal. For a company perspective that would be one officer per 5 firefighters on the apparatus. That would fill the six seats on the apparatus, but Jersey City runs with 4 members on the apparatus. (One officer and three firefighters) A Battalion Chief normally has command of 6 or 7 companies on the initial assignment. So the firefighters report to the Captain and the Captain reports to the Battalion Chief.

Suggestions:
1. Remove all Health Benefits from Part-Time Employees.
2. Remove Director Positions for Police and Fire Depts.
3. City Vehicles should only be used for essential departments. Reduce the fleet dramatically.
4. Evaluate Staff Positions in City Hall and eliminate wasteful positions.
5. Remove the 2 deputy mayor positions.
6. Move municipal elections to November.

I know these are small steps, but you need to start somewhere. The City needs to live within its means. With all of the development in the City over the past ten years; it is kind of sad that we are in this situation.

Re: Will fire department cutbacks threaten public safety? Union says yes; city says no
My primary points were, from a layman's perspective:

- perhaps the overall fire department (not the number of actual firefighters, per se) is overstaffed.

- the personnel of the fire department appears to be overpaid. By a lot.

And even if we adjust personnel to achieve desired ratios - the next question should be: do we have too many companies?
1st point- The JCFD has the same ratio as most fire departments in Essex and Hudson County.

2nd point- They are paid the same as most firefighters in the state of New Jersey.

***This is not a Jersey City issue.. It is a state of New Jersey issue.. Not one fire department in New Jersey meets NFPA 1710.

The general public has no idea how a fire department operates. The fire department need's to get out and educate the citizens on how a fire department needs to be run efficiently.

***Most Fire Departments operate in the State of New Jersey with a 3-1 ratio meaning firefighters to officers. The reasoning is most fire companies have 2 or 3 or 4 members on the rig. If the equipment was staffed correctly there would be a higher ratio of firefighters.

Krajnik and Fire Chief Michael O'Reilly agree the staffing problems are not due to having too many officers in the department. Over the past few years, retiring officers have for the most part not been replaced. As of March 1 there will only be 135 fire captains, 21 battalion chiefs and six deputy chiefs, according to O'Reilly.

"Only 135 fire captains...6 chiefs."

Only?

That's 162 Brass to the 380 firefighters. 2:1, FF:Brass.

A little top heavy.

Most fire departments have a 5:1 ratio.

How about moving some of the Brass to the front line and stop wasting money.

The Jersey City Fire Department operates with 4 battalion chiefs, 1 safety battalion chief and i deputy chief for the 24 hour shift. Which leaves 1 extra battalion chief and 2 extra deputy chief to cover all vacation and sick time.

Four captains are assigned to all 27 companies in the city. That means there are 108 captains assigned. Captains run the firehouse and the company. Captains are also interior firefighters. They pull hose, operate the nozzle, search, rescue, ladder, vent, etc.... They do everything a firefighter does, with the exception that they have to watch over the safety of the firefighter's in there company.

The Jersey City Fire Department is understaffed at the firefighter position.

Traffic Downtown during rush hour?
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Traffic downtown is a problem during rush hour. Mostly commuters drive like they are driving either on a highway or in a gang infested neighborhood. I have almost been hit three times in the past few weeks by people running red lights or by not stopping when they are turning on red.

Intersections:
Grand & Marin Blvd
Montgomery & Washington
Columbus & Marin Blvd

Solutions Possibly: No Turn On Red at every intersection and Cameras on busy intersections like they have in NYC.

A company officer should be in charge of 3-7 men with the optimal being 5. According to the Incident Command System.

Every company needs to be staffed with a Captain.

The typical JCFD company is assigned 4 Captains and 12 Firefighters. 1 Captain and 3 Firefighters per shift.

You obviously have no understanding of the fire service. Jersey City as well as every other fire department in the state of New Jersey is understaffed.

Jersey City puts more companies on the intial box compared to New York City because they need the manpower.
