This should carry the exact same penalty as an armed kidnapping. Hope these pieces of trash do life -- unfortunately they'll probably be back on the street in under 10 years.

19-year-old Jersey City man was reunited with his pit bull puppy after two men stole it at gunpoint Saturday afternoon, police reports said.

Two suspects identified by police as Rashaad Ling, 27, and Michael Smith, 23, both of Orient Avenue, were arrested and charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and unlawful possession of a weapon, reports said.

That place has been empty or nearly so every time I've gone in the past few years. I think the indoor smoking ban may have hit them especially hard, because it used to be packed when I first moved here. Seems like they have much more space than they make use of. It'd be cool if they could have bands play in there.

This space looks like it used to house a bar but to my knowledge nothing has operated since at least 2006 or so. Seems something is going in there now -- anyone know what?

Yes, but in 6 pack quantities, and for about double what you'd pay in a store before 10 pm. Burke's will sell an actual case and not rip you off too bad.

White Star barely counts as a dive anymore -- in many ways it has more in common with Hamilton Inn than with L7's.

Nobody has mentioned Guillo's (Coles & 6th) yet. I haven't hung out there much but when I have it was a good time and the old regulars didn't seem to mind a different crowd being present. It's for sale, and who knows what, if anything, will replace it.

Burke's (14th & Grove) is an interesting establishment. They alone can sell cases of beer after 10 pm. From what I've heard, this is due to a grandfather clause -- is Burke's the longest continuously operating bar downtown? My only other guesses for that title would be the Barge Inn or maybe Rolon's. Burke's will also sell partially consumed bottles of hard alcohol from behind the bar.

That's some crazy cinema badass shite right there. The kind of thing that responsible people will tell you never to attempt. I hope they catch the assailant, but since this turned out like it did it's possible that he was a total amateur with a clean record.

Quote:

user1111 wrote:
Two would-be robbers were thwarted by the Jersey City man they were attempting to rob early this morning, police said.

The incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. when the victim, a 45-year-old 16th Street resident, answered the door of his apartment.

Police said they were told that when he opened the door, two men entered the apartment with a handgun and told the man "Give me the f---ing money. My partner is in the back room with your girl. If she yells, my partner's going to kill her."

While being held at gunpoint, the man reached for the handgun and began to fight the robber, reports state. When the victim pulled the gun away from the robber, both assailants fled, reports said.

At the scene, police recovered the gun, a Smith and Wesson .357-caliber revolver and two live rounds. A check of the gun's history came back as stolen from Morris Township, reports state.

During the struggle, the victim was bitten twice by the man, but was not otherwise hurt, reports said. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.

Police are currently investigating the attempted robbery. Anyone with information is asked to call (201) 547-JAIL.

I feel a bit unsafe in that area, between the projects and Burke's and the homeless shelter. Whenever I've walked to Hoboken via Manila/Grove, I feel much better once I get out of that area and onto observer highway. It didn't seem like there was much surface flooding there with Sandy but I have no clue what happened in the basements.

On the other hand, aside from south Liberty Harbor and north Newport it's the largest underdeveloped part of downtown and it seems like it's gonna boom before anywhere else does. Buying there might be an incredibly good long term investment.

I'm considering buying a place in this area. As you can see by my handle I'm currently on the other side. I was wondering if anyone here currently lives on the other side. Do you find it safe? How did you make it through the storm? How is parking?

If you live south of the tunnel would you be comfortable living on the other side? A lot of stuff still in walking distance.

There is 700 Grove, Zephyr, and now the Cast Iron Lofts but also the Holland Gardens.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

If we get a new mayor this year, one of the best ways for him to keep the job would be a drastic change in approach to the trash issue. Treat it like an investment -- more money will flow into the city if it looks nicer, and people will think of the Healy era as the bad old days when the corner trash cans were always overflowing by Sunday afternoon.

Quote:

ianmac47 wrote:
There are no trash cans because it saves money not to empty trash cans. This is the same reason there are so few trash cans in around Jersey City: officials are more interested in saving money than cleanliness.

Journal Square smells like garbage because a trail hauling garbage on the fright tracks often ends up sitting on that section of track waiting for signals. It gets worse in the summer.

I love that stuff - adds some character to the neighborhood.

What makes the neighborhood look like crap, moreso than just about anywhere else downtown, is the amount of garbage on the sidewalk and streets, especially between Newark and 4th. It's astonishing that the business owners on that strip let it remain that way. If I ran Abby's or Frank's Pizza or any of the other nearby places I'd send one of my lower level employees outside to the sidewalk with a trash bag every shift.

Re: Attempted Break-In in Hamilton Park

Sometimes it's not random criminals, but the landlord's family or friends doing the burglaries. This was almost certainly the case a few years ago with my friend's place on Columbus where his laptop was stolen with no signs of forced entry. If the landlord himself or his family does in-apartment maintenance then they know whether there are items worth taking and approximately what hours you keep. I'd move ASAP.

Without going into too much detail as I don't want to make certain information public knowledge - i feel/know that our building doesn't meet the minimum security standards and our landlord is being all too casual about improving the current condition. I'm already looking into moving now, but I was going to reach out to my other tenants to get them to push the landlord to make REAL improvements. Are there any steps I can take to getting the ball rolling to get the landlord off his ass?

Re: 42-story residential tower on tap for Journal Square

The Heights and Greenville never would have been developed the way they are now had it not been for the streetcars, which used to be ubiquitous around Jersey City if you look at some old maps. This is prime real estate that will be under-utilized until it becomes politically possible again to engage in the type of major infrastructure projects that originally made this area.

Quote:

ianmac47 wrote:

You think these towers are causing some kind of change, like they will be a catalyst to ruining quality of life in Journal Square. That's not it. The change has already happened. These towers are the result, not the cause, the product, not the catalyst.

They are to built practically on top of the Journal Square transit center. Buses, PATH, and what could have been a light rail station if the don't-change-anything crowd hadn't been so oppositional to running a line down Sixth Street.

The traffic problems with fix themselves. If there is too much traffic, more people will take transit.

Let the grownups talk now.

Neverleft has an uncommon and rather extreme opinion. In the 7.5 years of my living downtown, with lots of walking back and forth from bars and friends' place in the middle of the night, I've never felt unsafe. Nobody in my somewhat large social circle has ever been mugged downtown in all those years. Nevertheless I agree with the unnamed officer that one should exercise caution downtown at night.

Police: Stay Out of the Red
BY LINDA GIANG

Jersey City is the second largest city in New Jersey, just behind Newark. As of the 2010 Census, Jersey City has a population of 247,530 people. This vast city runs for 14.9 square miles. A city of this size and population normally come with an equal amount of crime. It is useful for Saint Peter?s students who are not from the area to be aware of places to avoid. In an exclusive interview with several Jersey City Police Officers, who asked to remain anonymous, we got the lowdown on the city?s worst areas as far as crime.

Funny that they don't mention the name of the bar in the article. Technically it could be either the Powerhouse Lounge or O'Hara's, but I'm guessing the latter since the former doesn't self-describe as a bar.

After eating there three times, I have come to the conclusion that quality of Ginfi's food is excellent, but the value is a bit lacking. Much like their next door neighbor, everything is $1-3 more than it really ought to be. I also recommend calling ahead if you're carrying out, as even small orders take 15-20 minutes to fill.

All I can suggest is that you look for a new place. Moving sucks, but so does breathing in mold. If the landlord refuses to let you out of the lease and/or won't return your security deposit, gather as much evidence as possible (i.e. pictures) of your apartment's uninhabitability and move out anyway, then deal with it in the courts later. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but how much longer can you continue to live this way?

It serves all of us to aggressively ticket things like rolling through stop signs. The driving culture around here is out of control compared to many other parts of the country, and the only way to change it is to establish an expectation that traffic laws will be enforced. Nicely asking NJ drivers to be more courteous and less impatient isn't going to change anything.
