Re: PATH Train Incident

Home away from home

My confusion is why she waited from Newport all the way to 14th Street to move off the train, unless he didn't start being inappropriate till 9th Street.

If a guy was grinding against me I wouldn't stand it for a second, no less minutes on end.

Here is the AP story quoted in the WSJ:

Associated Press

JERSEY CITY, N.J. ? A New Jersey man has been charged with criminal sexual contact for an alleged incident aboard a PATH train.

Port Authority Police say 64-year-old Sathyanar Kovvali of West Windsor boarded the crowded inbound train at the Newport station on Tuesday morning.

Kovvali allegedly pushed himself up against a woman and began to grind against her. The victim was able to take a cellphone picture when the train reached 14th Street in Manhattan and passengers disembarked.

Armed with the picture, police were stationed on platforms to look for the suspect, and on Thursday he was spotted on a westbound train at Christopher Street. He was arrested at Newport station.

It wasn't immediately known if Kovvali had an attorney. He was being held by Port Authority police on $2,000 bail Thursday.

When I lived on 8th street I was mailed a flier asking if I'd give permission to use my apartment for filming of a movie (lived in one of the old "brownstones"). I figured it to be a scam, but it turned out it was for Cadillac Records. Looks as though they ended up filming in Newark.

Okay, I moved out of Jersey City in 2008, and moved back in only recently, but back during my time here I *literally* -- I mean it, literally -- tried every pizza place in Downtown Jersey City. Without a doubt, in my humble opinion, they were all sh*t. I couldn't choose one over the other.

It is something I've griped about for years -- how can Hoboken have decent pizza yet you walk a bit over to DT JC and it falls apart. People have good theories about that, but it isn't an excuse.

New to the area is Two Boots, which is good, but not really the NY pizza I'm looking for. I see these gourmet, brick oven joints popping up but I can make pizza that tastes like that at home.

Re: Best local Hospital?

I was ambulanced to Christ Hospital once for food poisoning (it was that bad). In the emergency room I was left in a wheel chair till a doctor came over and asked about me, and then yelled at the staff for not bringing me in (at this point I was barely able to talk or breathe).

After being given something to help me hydrate and sleep I was just left there. I managed to get 1 piece of ice out of a nurse, but they wouldn't give me anything else in fear I would throw it up. I never have been so thirsty in my life so had to check myself out just so I could get to a vending machine and grab a drink.

On a side note, the doctor complimented me on how nicely the long scar on the back of my head healed from some past neurosurgery I had at Robert Wood Johnson in New Brunswick. She joked, "You sure didn't have that done here!"

Just came here to say do *not* use RobinsOak Management. They were the management for the couple of years I lived in a place. All the people in our 8 apartment building were banding together to email the owner directly, which we did. Not sure it ever helps. They were non-responsive to most requests, and delayed in others. Most fixes they did were patches done by non-professionals.

True about Matthew Broderick. He came to speak there during a JC Friday a year or two ago. Saw him ... Looks just like a brother of mine, even in person.

Re: Living in Hamilton Park

Less than $1300 in Hamilton Park is nearly impossible. A friend was looking for a studio or 1 bedroom for that last year and the cheapest he found was 1350 for a place on Manila. He is probably moving to DC so maybe it is opening up - I would think once it does the owner may ask for more.

I live in a beautiful 1050 sq/ft apartment in Hamilton Park and pay about 1750 now after the years of 4% increases in rent. I'm moving to London later this month for work and know that the landlord is going to be asking $2000 for the place.

Get a roomie or bite the bullet and pay more, unfortunately.

I just took a look at an apartment in the Hamilton Park area. Can anyone tell me how they feel about the general area? Nightlife? Places to eat? Safety?

Besides Newport I consider Hamilton Park the safest part of Jersey City. I've never felt unsafe, even walking home in the wee hours. There is a police precinct on 7th Street, and therefore are cop cars swarming around while they are coming or going.

Nightlife is all towards Grove/Newark, with the exception of a few bars like Simple (more formal), Hamilton Park Ale House (more food), and White Star (best overall, IMO).

The mall is so close in case you wanted any quick fast food. I wouldn't complain about the walk through the mall. You'll be glad it is there when it is raining or freezing.

I've loved living in Hamilton Park, and my roommate (female) would say the same. She's never felt unsafe here.

State Cracks Down on Gas Stations For Price Discrepancies, Inaccurate Pumps
Friday, June 20, 2008 - Millennium Radio
By: Martin Di Caro

As gas prices soar, you may not be getting what you pay for, even as you pay more and more.

State authorities on Thursday announced 350 gas stations were fined out of 1,023 stations that were inspected during a recent three-day operation in all 21 counties.
The most common violation (62) found by inspection teams was inaccurately calibrated pumps which dispensed fewer gallons into a driver's tank than the amount the customer paid for.

Weights and measures inspectors also discovered pricing discrepancies and inaccurate octane ratings.
Sate Attorney General Anne Milgram calls the investigation "deeply troubling," but conceded there is no way for a consumer to determine if he's getting less gas than what his receipt shows.

"What they're going to have to know is that we're out there doing it for them. To me, it is critically important the state and the counties play this role," said Milgram at a press conference at a West Orange gas station.

She encouraged customers to get out of their cars when they get gas to make sure they get the octane they requested and to verify if prices are properly posted.
If you spot something wrong at a gas station, like the prices being changed more than once per day, you are encouraged to call the state at 732-815-4840.

Anyone know if Abbey's sells hookah materials such as charcoal or shisha? The only place I knpow of is on Christopher street in the city and don't want to make the trip out there just for that.

Yeah, actually saw the new menu. A LOT more expansive with more good bar choices. I'll actually be going back there more often now. Good for them.

They're a reason that Harvest Cart is no longer around? That's beat.

Anyway, I've rarely ever gone to the Ale House because I don't find the prices to be up my alley. The dinner menu is "fancy", but as someone else here mentioned, nothing really tickles my fancy on it.

I ordered some chili the other day and I was surprised by how good it was. I was expecting a run-of-the-mill taste but it had something extra.

I don't see what the big deal is about having a bunch of TVs in there. Watching sports is something to do while you're having some drinks, and at worst you just ignore the TVs. I wouldn't have gone there a couple times if there were no TVs to watch the game I wanted - maybe that speaks to alienating certain regulars and bringing in new regulars.

The thing for me though is the menu doesn't speak to me, and the drink prices are high (normal for this area, I guess - but still).

That was the first bar I went to that I felt comfortable in with the crowd that arrives. At Simple the prices are higher which attracts an older crowd; same with the Ale House.

I haven't been there in probably 6 months though because it is kind of a haul for me to get there, especially when compared to the liquor store that is so near to me.

While in there don't forget to order the Shane Island Ice Tea - just don't play that board game with Shane, he'll get really pissed if he loses.

I don't live at any Harrison Ave location and RobinsOak is still bad. Nice "look on the bright side" post though.

RobinsOak Management manages the property I rent, and are they are definitely horrible. You need to nag them to get anything done, as they rarely return emails or calls.

I was warned of them when moving into my building and I would have listened, had it not been a great apartment for the money.

When push comes to shove, the people in my building end up contacting the owner when the management company fails at keeping up its end of the bargain.

The light in all of this is that the lease states they must keep up their end of the bargain - so things get done, but in the cheapest way possible, and usually after a few attempts.

I despise them, and have come to fix things myself that I can.

Here are all the parking rules .. 50ft from a stop sign? .. that law is definitely broken hundreds of times daily in JC.

I had to increase the image size so it could be seen, sorry for the blurriness.. click on it to see it full size

The place to avoid parking is the no-man's land between BJs and Pep Boys. That is the only place I see cars towed. If you want to walk to the mall, park right next to ShopRite and walk along Marin to the mall.

Unfortunately the towing company already complies with all of those things. I may only be aware of the signs because I go by there everyday.

PSA: Watchout for towtruck at ShopRite downtown
Home away from home
Home away from home

I go by there everyday and there is always a big, lifted truck keeping watch on the cars that park there, and his partner in the tow truck.

They are there all day long towing cars i assume they feel aren't patrons in the BJs, Pep Boys, or Shoprite.

They may very-well be legit in the cars that they tow, but I would NEVER park my car anywhere in the outskirts - They seem to tow WAY too many cars day-in and day-out.

I could be wrong, they may be totally legit but I don't believe it.

In any case, my point is don't park your car in that giant parking lot to take the light rail or go to the mall - They're watching you.

Re: If You Lived Here, You’d Be Cool by Now -- New York Magazine (REPOST)
Home away from home
Home away from home

Argh! I can't stand it when people talk sh*t about Jersey! The whole article wreaked of "Jersey is a dump", or of someone not from the state. They should have interviewed more people who were from the area, not living here because it is some new hip place to be. I live here because this is where my work is and I wanted to be closer.

The article wasn't completely objectionable - other than the fact that it spoke about NY neigborhoods more than Jersey City in an article that is supposed to be about JC. Then again, it is NY Magazine.

I do very much agree (and glad someone mentioned it in the article) about the lack of music venues in Jersey City.
