Might get a bit more later.
Local stations don't all have rain gauges but I just looked at Caven Point and it was reporting 3.69" so far today. Wow-

Chanpion13, This forum can be really helpful when the trolls stay away from the subject at hand!

If you can't find a local spot on a neighbor's property, which would be cheap (or even free if you offered to shovel snow for them over next winter try RSS Cycle Storage at 397 7th Street. It's over near the highway overpass, close to Newark Ave. Easy walk from the HP area. Indoors space, very cool crowd who keep and wrench their bikes in there. Talk to Henry, the owner, who's a great guy. 917-816-0042

Ride on!

OK, we got that sorted out. The OP mentioned his wife in post #9, and seems to have little experience in NJ, so I was just trying to clarify the passenger rule things for him should he buy a new ride.

thanks all. useful info for sure!

also thanks jcneighbor, that was actually incredibly useful, especially with the parking/locking info. i think my only option now is to do permit parking on the street. honestly i wonder if crime is even bad still in DT JC?

i was wondering how people were getting away with scooters without an endorsement with the recent changes in law. i see now it actually starts at the dealer for classification.

so far i've been to a placed called motorcycle mall a little north of here. it's pretty big, but i didn't see what i wanted exactly.

my wife definitely wants a retro european look, so we've been looking at vespas there. also have genuine scooters on our list, but they don't seem to have a dealer near us.

Paco, as I mentioned below the laws have changed around here at least 3 times in the past 20 years, and I've been riding and wrenching through all of them. And the current law is that anything under 50cc CAN be registered as a moped. Doesn't matter if it's a moped or a scooter, or whether it has pedals. 50cc Scooter owners may OPT to register as a motorcycle so that they COULD carry a passenger. The one thing that hasn't changed is that "carrying a passenger" requires both a motorcycle registration AND a license endorsement REGARDLESS of displacement. So carrying a passenger on a 50cc scooter registered as a motorcycle without an endorsement is illegal. Correct me if I'm wrong-

If wifey is going to be on the back then it's a motorcycle and you'll need the endorsement on your license.

Part of the confusion at the DMV is because moped laws here in NJ have changed several times in the last several decades. At one point NJ was pretty lax. Then things really tightened up and even a 50cc (49) was considered a motorcycle UNLESS it had pedals and could be pedal-driven. Then that was relaxed to under 50cc regardless of pedals for Moped classification. But still no passenger allowed.

Crime? My buddy's Ducati 650 was swiped last year and recovered in Queens, NY. Two guys and truck, like I said-

My only caution on scooter shopping is to not be tempted by the cheap Chinese knockoffs. They're basically Honda engine clones but made with a bunch of cast (not machined) parts. They'll work fine for a year or two then you'll need a full engine rebuild. Trust me on this one...

I know a local guy who's looking to sell a Vespa 150 that needs a bit of work, if you're interested-

I've never bought a new bike. I'm good with a wrench and fixing up/riding bikes 25-50 years old is just my thing. Plus, any business miles I do (roughly 500 per year) earn me $0.535 per mile as a Federal Deduction so I actually make money while grinning past my earlobes...

Paco is correct on the endorsement question. Some dealers (for new bikes) will automatically register it as a Motorcycle. Just insist that it be registered as a MOPED. Then you get a license plate that says Moped on it. That classification is a LOT less expensive for insurance purposes. If you register it as a Motorcycle you are legally allowed to carry a passenger. Moped is solo-only in NJ.

The Vespa shop on 10th Street closed several years ago.

For parking, I ALWAYS chain my bikes to a strong object with a hardened steel chain and lock. If two men could pick it up and have it in the back of a truck in about 15 seconds then it's not worth the risk of losing it. I park my daily rider in the small stoop area in front of my house, locked to an iron fence. When I'm out and about I chain it to a sign post or a telephone pole or a parking meter. And FWIW I've never gotten a ticket. I ride roughly 1,000 miles per year at a total annual cost (including insurance) of $100.

Personally, I prefer mopeds with larger-diameter wheels over the small-wheel scooters.

Sold my last motorcycle 30 years ago and have been riding old Mopeds here in JC ever since. There are a bunch of us moped collectors, actually, and several of us own more than one. I also know a number of Vespa and big bike riders here in the Downtown area.
Food deliveries around here tend to be electric bikes for the local stuff and by car for deliveries farther away or in bad weather.

Was it just an observation on your part or are you a rider looking for folks with a common interest?

Huge second on Dolomiti's comments below.

The one great irony in this whole discussion is that HBLR was ASSURED by the City of JC that the south end of Jersey Avenue would never be opened to vehicular traffic into the park. Now it seems firmly in the plans, and not only will it be traffic crossing the Morris Canal Basin to Jersey Ave., it will be a ton of commuter traffic, all jumping to the exit/entrance just north of the main toll plaza, thinking it will be faster than going to the next exit by Montgomery. The signs there are currently minimal and the biggest issue has been joggers and bicyclists thinking they can "beat the train" and ducking around/under the barrier. Seen a bunch of close calls...

First of all, this is a tough crowd, and if you can't handle the heat you should stay away.

The marketing release was beyond awful. Drag in every cliche and buzzword you've ever heard, and hope it sells? And for a place that plans to open in roughly 2 weeks to not even have their menu up so people who see the pre-opening announcement can get an idea of what to expect is just a plain failure at marketing 101. Do I plan to rush down there for a $9 beer and a "backyard experience"? Nope, I can do that in my own back yard with friends. And I can take in the view almost anywhere I want, and anytime I want, for free-

I get up at 5:00 anyway on weekdays, but that sure was loud. It was on Montgomery, between Jersey and Varick, and Montgomery westbound (only) was closed. One of those huge vacuum trucks that they generally use for pumping out the drains at the street corners. I think they pulled two manhole covers mid-block so that's why it went off twice.

You're such a loser. As has been mentioned, major rehabs are automatically eligible for a 5 year abatement. It has nothing to do with Dixon or city council.

BTW, if anyone from Dixon is reading this, please buy up some of the abandoned properties in my neighborhood in the Heights to convert into 2,3, or 4-family homes. I'm tried of the blight, and it sounds like you guys know hoe to get the job done. Great jobs guys.

Um, might want to re-think that request. Dixon owns about 6-7 houses on my block alone in DTJC. Two of them they purchased 2 years ago and they've been sitting empty ever since. Don't know if they plan to refurb them or sell them as-is, but probably the former. Dixon is usually the last to shovel during the winter and when they are doing refurb work they pay zero attention to the noise they make, starting early (like 7:00) and sometimes all weekend. As neighbors go, pretty obnoxious...

If you are talking about Tile, you are wasting your time. They are not GPS based: they rely on bluetooth technology and on people having the app installed and enabled to relay the signal, if they happen to come in close enough proximity.

Tile is the absolute most useless, and over hyped, piece of technology to come around in quite some time. It has tapped into a market of misinformation and lots of people are buying them thinking it can do something that is simply not able to do.

Well, I dealt with them on high-value stuff, not just homeowners which you asked about. Standard protocol when notified of a claim is to deny coverage. Then it gets litigated, sometimes for years, before a legitimate coverage payment is made. I spent 20 years in that industry and I saw it firsthand. Insurance requires a certain amount of trust between both parties. They expect you to pay the premium and you expect them to pay for covered loss or damage. I won't do business with a company that I don't trust-

I say kudos to the Webmaster for moderating in the interest of civility. We all know there are certain individuals who repeat themselves ad nauseam as if they think repeating their (sometimes-ridiculous) opinion is going convince anyone in their right mind that they should agree. In doing so, they pretty much put a target on their back and some people with too much time on their hands take the opportunity to take a cheap shot. It's only comic relief if you have WAAY too much free time (or no life).

I've been around this Forum for almost 12 years and it's really helpful on certain topics when everybody stays on point.

Mostly agree but it's a matter of timing and perspective. Those of us who bought and moved here 30 years ago were in a rough town and we welcomed other newcomers and we worked together to help improve the neighborhood and the schools and responsible government. Some of us stayed, some left for the suburbs or beyond.

So how long you been in JC, Harry? I'd bet less than 10 years. For a Newbie on this Forum, I thought your comment was obnoxious.

It's not that hard but it can take awhile if you have to trim a bunch of that very hard wood to fit into the head. I've done it with both a very sharp sheath knife and with a mini grinder. Look it up as a DIY project and take it on as a challenge.

I'll save you the googling:

Anthony Newell, an 11-year veteran of the police force, was arrested on March 1 at East Fourth Street and Lord Avenue along with 30-year-old Eileen Conway, of Jersey City, according to Bayonne police.

It's the industry standard in today's market. Like any sport or hobby you have junk, cheap, affordable, and high end. You wouldn't know it unless you were in the game.

Exactly. But my question is why would anyone in the game, who can presumably appreciate a high-end machine, leave it in an inadequately-locked bike room?

People leave 50K machines on the road routinely when they park their cars. At some point, you just hope and trust that humanity will not let you down. I dont know if the bike rooms in question were inadequately locked, but I am assuming each the rooms was locked and that the criminal simply broke / circumvented those locks. Either way, the victim is not at fault. Owning an expensive bike does not make you deserving of being the victim of theft or burglary.

Bod, I did NOT mean to imply in any way that the victim was "at fault". But let's face it, a bike can disappear into the back of a truck and be gone forever whereas a car (possibly with LoJack or at least alarmed) is a tougher steal and is either on the road or headed to a chop shop. I ride some nice bikes as well as old mopeds and I lock the heck out of them. The bicycles come inside when I'm home.
