Here is the thing with Newark ave - the commercial spaces are huge. .[/quote]

Is there a zoning reason why some of these large spaces can't be divided up on the inside with several businesses sharing a common entrance? Or, why can't they be divided so that we have store fronts on Columbus as well as Newark? Those big spaces could easily accommodate several clothing boutiqyes, home furnishings shops, etc. Each would provide customers for the others too, I would imagine.

By presenting yourself as a Republican supporting Fulup do you think you might be linking Fulop with Romney/Ryan in people's minds and perhaps doing Fulop more harm than good?

Okay, I'll upgrade the quality of his information to B+. No A or even A- since he said it was a chain. I usually avoid Grove because Grand Sichuan enables my Ma Po Tofu addiction, so didn't see the sign myself.

Also heard, from a not terribly reliable source, that a Mexican restaurant (a southern chain) is opening up across from Grand Sichuan in the old textile store.

Appliances for upper floors of row house

Can anyone recommend a narrow or shallow fridge with bottom freezer that can get up to the third floor of an old downtown house. I've found four makers:
Summit
Blomberg
Subzero
Liebherr

Are there others?

Anyone have experience with these - capacity and performance more important than price.

I don't know if these are technical terms or just your terrific use of words, but you've created a wonderful image. I look forward to a public hearing like this:

Reporter: So Mayor Healy how will you solve the flooding problems in DTJC?

Healy: Depends

Are you suggesting that commuters will incur the tunnel toll and the cost of parking in Manhattan to avoid the PATH?

That's an expensive alternative. I think before that happens most people would try to stagger their work schedule or move to NYC.

One way to increase capacity a bit might be to rip out the seats in all but one or two of the PATH cars. Or how about digging up and flooding 2nd Street as far as Marin and turning it into a canal so that ferries world be more accessible. (pipedream)

Do you have to be a property owner in JC to run for office or just a resident?

I've been pleasantly surprised by Big Chef on Jersey Avenue a few times. I think their lunch menu extends to Saturday.

I've found that if a Chinese restaurant uses white meat for Kung Pao Chicken and serves fried noodles with their soup they usually suck. I'm also leery of pot stickers that are brown all over and arrive at the table quickly.

I have to agree - totally reliable. Also, the workman who did my job were terrific and hardworking. Embarrassing that they leave your house cleaner at the end of each work day than it usually is when there is no construction.

Caj11, parades being self supportive is a good point. The city can make it so, by issuing tickets to those who trash the neighborhood. This can cover all the costs for the city.

You can issue as many tickets as you like, collecting the fines is what matters.

Perhaps an alternative is to determine in advance how much to collect from the parade sponsors and not issue a permit until the money is given on deposit. There must be some sort of formula based on length of route, anticipated number of attendees, cops per block etc. Return the unused balance or collect the difference. If the city doesn't collect the difference, no permit next year. If in addition the cops make some arrests, all the better.

Asking all parades to put money down defuses the charges of racism, etc.

You've got a pretty high bar there, that description fits 14th st & 6th ave, and you can't say Chelsea isn't gentrified!

This an urban phenomenom I've never really understood - 14th Street has Greeenwich Village to the south, Chelsea to the North and Meatpacking to the west and is still pretty dumpy. I guess to a lesser extent Newark Avenue follows the same trend. I suspect it has more to do with underserviced neighborhoods with transportation routes that make access to 14th Street (and Newark Avenue) easy.
To me it is interesting that overlaid on the skuzziness of 14th is a very upscale foodie route - Chelsea Market, Eden Farms (?), WF, TJ and Union Square. Maybe that is a transit-related benefit as well.

If all Google is showing is HSBC and Urban Outfitters, maybe someone installed one of those yuppy cookies from Chelsea Market.

Re: Authentic Chinese Groceries and Food - where to go?
Home away from home
Home away from home

For non-perishables and tea, I go to Kam Man at 200 Canal Street. A lot of Chinese cookbooks have lists of ingredients in their opening pages - I copied one that had the Chinese characters and take it with me when I shop. I show it to employees if I can't find something or (try to) match it up with the signs in vegetable stores. This makes Chinatown less inscrutable.

For cooked meats I like Big Wong on Mott. If the Board of Health issued a "Z" for hygiene they would probably get it, but the stuff is delicious, and I love the name. Alas, they no longer sell tee-shirts.

I also usually go to Golden Steamer (on Mott above Canal - west side) for bao, but have lately been getting them from Nom Wah on Doyers. I do not like their dim sum or the atmosphere.

In cool weather, always on my way home, I go to Tasty Dumplings at 54 Mulberry for a bags of frozen dumplings. The dumplings are delicious and as far as I can figure this is the closest place to the PATH if you are concerned about defrosting.

I never buy raw meat or fish in Chinatown, but maybe some day. I also never shop in Chinatown on the weekends.

What I'm talking about is something different from Basic. A place where you can stop and pick out prepared foods from a display case and have them pack it for you. Like ginger salmon, pesto noodles, veggie burgers, mac and cheese, etc. You'd pay by the pound, in case you don't feel like cooking that night. Like Whole Foods or something like that. They have that stuff at A&P but it's not very good.

I share your wish - the prepared food at Whole Foods, Citarella's and Balducci (of blessed memory) - are good models. Those Boar's Head/Extruded Shrimp Korean Delis are not what I have in mind. I can't imagine why anyone would move if one opened up - you can just cross to the other side of the street.

Or develop a system for national referendums as an alternative to single or narrow issue parties like a Marajuana Party.

The Swiss have a referendum system that has addressed issues like foreign policy, suffrage, housing, etc. I think they just had a referendum on referendums.
