Their signage looks a lot like Patisserie Paul, a French upscale bakery chain that has started opening in the US.

I'm hoping that their products are of a similar quality too.

It's not a hard concept but if you have a bunch of 99 cent/cheapo stores, you're not going to get the demographic that will help you increase your property values.

When a brooks brothers opens up in Manhattan, no one says, "we don't need an overpriced suit store." That is such a horrible attitude

If anything you should WANT and BEG for the overpriced stores to come so the type of people which those stores cater to might give your neighborhood a second look.

What impression do you think people have when they walk down central ave or even newark ave and see all those 99 cent cheapo stores? The impression isn't, "wow, this place is affordable, let me live here." It's "wow, the ghetto.."

When people walk down saks fifth ave in nyc, they are impressed and aspire to live there. JC should have that attitude. Again, not a hard concept and the only way to increase your property values besides major connections to NYC and a major improvement in public schools. Of the three, improving local businesses is the most viable...

You should move into the Short Hills Mall.

I LOL'd so hard I wet my Brooks Bros. suit But seriously, I think we should all write tasteful notes to Tiffany, on our engraved stationery, suggesting that they open in the Borinquen Hardware space. Facing Europa would actually be casting pearls before swine.

That's the best suggestion I've heard from you. If only you weren't joking.

I actually don't think the people of JC are "swine." Maybe only those who shop at the 99 cent stores and places with the word "cheap" in them.

If whole foods or trader joes actually opened in JC, we would attract more of the people that have made JC somewhat better - those people who can actually afford a brooks bother suit. Most of them already live in Newport, another area that is hated on by many of you.

I want to reiterate that if you want property values to rise, you need those people. However, you can have all your "dinginess" (a nice word for the ghetto I suppose) and resell your place for less than 25% of what a comparable property goes for in nyc and less than 50% of what a comparable property goes for in dtjc.

Hey heights owners, you can still look at greenville and bl and say your homes are worth more...whatever that is worth (not much..in dollar terms of course).

I was in no way referring to anyone as swine - I was alluding to the pork products sold at Europa. For more insight see Matthew 7:6. Calling people swine would put me in the same category as those who call people guidos, morons, pretentious assholes, etc.

Yesterday the building had signs warning people of demolition going on by a local company - Eglentowicz. Any idea what will go there? Any zoning/historic district reasons the building can't be demolished (they might just be gutting it).

Here's yet another alternative - Hip Suburbs. Apparently people are leaving Brooklyn for towns on the Hudson, Montclair, etc.

I like living in DTJC a lot. I would not live in any other part of JC, however. I think more than anything else it's because I own a house and garden in a neigborhood that is both charming and friendly. No one tap dancing on my head, etc. I have alternatives - a 2 bedroom coop in Manhattan that I rent out and an apartment in Paris that I use once or twice a year and offer to friends other times. What do people think they will find in Brooklyn that they can't find here?

A construction fence has been put around Borinquen Hardware building. (Jersey, across from Europa). Anyone know what it will be?

Looks like the resto at the corner of Monmouth and Newark has open. The menu says it is fusion churrascaria. Maybe they omitted the con.

Pshaw - Does this mean that once the multi-plex pizza place opens on the plaza at Grove Street food trucks that are part of the Farmers' Market won't be allowed? What about the vendors who have stalls, not trucks? Many sell cooked foods like empanadas, bbq, etc.
What's the name of this bill "The Protection of Crappy Restos from Competition Act"?

Here's some more information on the area. There was a theatre where the Gregory Apartments were built and Newark Avenue, Warren and Montgomery met.

One thing that I would like to see downtown is a small movie theatre - first Whole Foods, but then Whole Films.

I think the McDonald's was a dress shop - Dorenstein's.

This not in downtown, but sounds interesting as a pizza variation. Faina sounds a lot like socca or farinata, the chickpea pancake you see sold on the street in Nice or Genoa. Anyone been here?

I was there today and saw those big red carts. I think they added them to their motor pool because too many customers complained that the old ones made their asses look big. Just guessing based on the lady having an orgasm in front of the 2 for $5.00 Keebler cookie sale. Her buttocks were demurely hidden behind the ATV grocery cart she was wielding. Those cheeks would have been hanging over both sides of a regular cart.
On a positive note, I like that Shoprite doesn't hassle customers about using their carryhome bag as a basket in the store. Some stores do because of loss prevention concerns. It helps not to buy more than I can carry home.

I'm at Hunter - 68th and Lex several days a week. I take whatever train that comes first, but prefer 33 in the winter. At 33rd walk to the right and find the N or R uptown. Get off at 59th and get the uptown 6 one stop. You are inside the whole trip. If you have the time, exit 68th via SE corner (they are marked) and you can take the crosstown bus to York. It might be faster to walk, however. I get on the train at about 10am - can't speak to how crowded one line is compared to another earlier which might influence your route. bon voyage

Actually, I saw white subway tiles, which are a simple looking tile, but kind of a classic look IMO.

The floor is gray hexagonal stone (not ceramic) tiles. I was watching a guy giving what I think was a bronze wash to tin ceiling tiles, some of which have since been put up. When I googled "cheap tile" the closest thing to what I see on the walls costs $25.99 a square foot (in green). Is that cheap? Dunno.

Hopefully the new owners of Buon Appetito will continue keep the same consistency as the original Bayonne owner started out to do. I don't think Papa John's should be included in this because they are a chain operation and the recipe and equipment differs from the usual type of pizza fare.

Yes, it's now called 13 MBAs from Mumbai. They sell pizza in the front and have 6 sets of bunkbeds in the back. The midget sleeps in the pizza oven.
Actually, as of 1300 the same young guys as always were there. The chicken parm hero was $8.03 and very satisfying.
On another pizza note - lots of work going on today at the multiplex pizza across from Grove Station. This will be a great place for outdoor tables so people can snack while they wait for their loved ones or someone they met on line to get out of the PATH.

If this is true report it to the Historic Preservation Officer. My neighbor had to rip out his metal windows right after installing them. I understand that now the procedure is to put a lien on the property for the cost of the appropriate windows which must be paid off when the building is sold.

1. This is not a sovereign wealth fund, it is a publicly traded corp. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_wealth_fund

2. Once they buy a property, especially a small building like a rowhouse, I think it is important to make sure the number of units doesn't exceed the zoning. I thought that when a rowhouse in dtjc changes hands it can't have more units than at time of purchase (not going to bet on this). Also, it's a good idea for neighbors to make sure new owners stay within historic guidelines where it applies.

Did you draw this conclusion from reading their prospectus? From my reading I got the sense that they are buying properties, especially in downtown, that need fixing up to command market rate rents. My guess is that in downtown this will fast track the "upgrading" of the streets west of Coles to the Turnpike overpass. Personally, I prefer that smaller buildings be owner-occupied with a rental unit to help with costs, if necessary.
