#61
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Hello everyone, We're running a fundraiser online right now for a courageous Jersey City mother who is also a Hudson County Corrections Officer. In addition, we'll be holding an indoor soccer tournament on November 22nd at St. Peter's College to also raise funds to help offset the mounting debt she is incurring as she cares for her critically ill son, one-year-old Kenneth. Teams of players (up to 10 on a roster) as well as individual players are welcomed to participate in the indoor, 4 v 4 tournament. Read more about Officer Lillian Whitted and our fundraising efforts here: Jersey City Baby Fights for His Life .

I just took my son to Donald Perlman who has offices in West Orange and Jersey City. He's rated as one of NJ's top allergy/asthma docs. A little quirky, but extremely knowledgeable and well respected. Amazing credentials to boot. He came highly recommended to me by a local mother. I liked his approach and he is affiliated with all of our local hospitals.

Re: JC mayor to sing at Giants Stadium Sunday

Just so I can halt this potential hijacking before it goes any further, this soccer event is The Heroes Cup, a match where the JCPD play the JCFD soccer teams on the Giants Stadium pitch. It is sponsored by us, The Soccer Learning Center.

The New York Red Bulls are gracious enough to allow us to use their facilities in exchange for ticket sales to the event.

For many of the participants, it's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play in front of a crowd of thousands on a professional field. It's also a way for us to thank the cops and firefighters and highlight their efforts in a family-friendly venue.

The mayor, an enthusiastic supporter of our soccer program, was kind enough to volunteer to sing at the opening of the Heroes Cup match.

Last year's event was terrific and the ticket price cannot be beat (only $15 for the DC United vs. Red Bulls match and the Heroes Cup match). There is a pre-game indoor area for kids where they can play soccer related activities. And from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, the Red Bulls team will be on hand for a meet-and-greet/autograph event.

For more information, please visit our website at www.SoccerLearningCenter.com.

The NJ Ironmen are owned by the NJ Devils and are a part of the Xtreme Soccer League. The Prudential Center indoor soccer venue is family friendly and a good time for the ticket price.

Hi JCListers,

Just wanted to thank everyone - we have been able to collect 300 soccer balls to benefit Iraqi children (our goal was 200).

We'll be at the JC City Hall today at 4:15 pm for a press conference with the mayor and we'll present the donation to the family of the Army soldier stationed in Iraq who will be distributing the balls.

The Jersey Journal has indicated their interest in doing a story on the drive, too.

Thanks again for your kindness and generosity...

Thanks for the support everyone. We've got six days left and we're still a long way off from our goal.

FGD - The box is in the lobby of city hall on Grove Street - walk in the front door and ask the security guard to point out the box. If you can't make it there, please email me at soccerlearning@aol.com for alternatives.

And yes, FAB - as soon as I can get photos of the distribution, I'll post them here.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your support. We're going to buy pumps to include in the shipment. If you want to drop one in the box along with your ball, that would be great, too!

The ball drive is featured in today's Jersey Journal:

Soccer Ball Drive for JC Soldier in Iraq

We are helping out an Army soldier stationed in Iraq whose Dad (a really great guy) lives in Jersey City. The soldier is in need of soccer balls to distribute to children in the village where his unit is stationed. We have jumped on board with the goal of collecting 200 new soccer balls (any size, any brand) by November 8th. The balls will be shipped directly to the soldier's unit.

Mayor Jerramiah Healy has already kicked in ten balls to our effort and helped establish a donation site at City Hall.

We need every ball we can get to reach our goal. You can drop off a new soccer ball in the lobby at City Hall on Grove Street today through Friday, November 7th.

For more information or for other local donation sites, please contact Coach Alex Lalaoui at 201-920-8523.

Thanks JCListers - I know you guys have big hearts to help!

-----More vaccine news-----

WASHINGTON - GlaxoSmithKline Plc's rotavirus vaccine is associated with increased pneumonia-related deaths and other adverse reactions, U.S. regulatory staff said in documents posted on Friday.

The review comes ahead of a Food and Drug Administration advisory meeting next Wednesday to consider approval of the oral vaccine to prevent the most common cause of severe diarrhea and dehydration among infants and young children in the world.

FDA staff said its analysis of 11 studies revealed that in the largest trial, there was a statistically significant increase in deaths related to pneumonia compared with placebo, documents posted on the FDA's Web site said.

That study, which enrolled about 63,000 children, also found an increase in convulsions in children given the drug, named Rotarix. Another study found an increased rate of bronchitis, compared with placebo.

In a conclusion section, the FDA documents noted the pneumonia-related deaths and convulsions, but did not appear to make a recommendation to the advisory panel.

That expert panel will weigh the staff review, but makes its own recommendation, which is typically followed by the FDA.
