Zahara Day Spa - monmouth street
#61
Home away from home
Home away from home

Has anyone tried this new spa? I'm excited to have a place in my neighborhood, but it seemed a bit pricey, at $130 for a standard facial. Is that a normal price?

There are a couple of obviously fake reviews on Yelp. When will people realize what a turn off that is??

I have also spent (way too much) time trying to figure this out. My guess is that the bistro, wine bar, and whiskey bar are one space; the speakeasy is a little separate spot, either a different room or just more intimate area of the wine/whiskey bar; the pizza place is totally separtae, in the back with the entrance that's not on the plaza (not sure the street). Maybe?

You'll have kind of a tough time finding a Catholic priest willing to do a wedding outside the church. That said, I did find one for our wedding and I adored him. He's an amazing, fascinating person...has done loads of missionary work, marched with MLK for civil rights...very cool. Here's his website: http://www.revpaulmayer.com/

Congrats!

I enjoyed MWL and will miss it. The tres leches cake is one of the best desserts I've ever had. Love the black bottoms, and the grab and go dinners were delicious. Her meatloaf is better than my mom's. Celeste is a great person and I always enjoyed chatting with her when I stopped in. Was MWL pricey? A bit, but I am happy to pay a little more to support a JC business. There may be cheaper places in the city, but who wants to schlep in just for a slice of banana bread?

Now that Walker's has moved to the city, where do JCListers like to go for spa facials?

I love going to psychics! So much fun. I've been to Dina on Newark Ave, and didn't like her...expensive and boring. My fave is in the city, I don't know the address but her shop is on 23rd st between 8th and 9th aves, across from the SVA theater.

There's also a place in Chinatown that does aura readings from a polaroid, which sounds pretty fun.

A few pople on here have mentioned their Verizon Home Monitoring systems. If you have this, what do you think of it? What type of situation do you think it works best in (private home, apartment building, etc). Thanks!

We had an attempted break in last week in our building on 5th and Brunswick. It looked like someone was trying to pry the deadbolt with a screwdriver. Maybe the same guy...

Hi fellow Jersey Citizens, please share this! We're offering hot meals, showers, etc, in our home to local cancer survivors affected by Sandy.

***

Do you know someone being treated for cancer who is without power, water, or has been displaced from his or her home because of Sandy?

We are two Jersey City cancer survivors who would like to offer a hot shower, a hot meal, internet usage, or just a little R&R to local residents affected by cancer. We are located on 5th Street in downtown JC.

Please call or text Emily and Matt at (908)410-1287, or email ShelterFromTheStormJC@gmail.com for more information.

Tachair books is a new used bookstore on Newark Ave, near the corner of Monmouth. They will usually give you a free coffee if you donate books.

I love having any kind of bookstore downtown, so have been going to them lately with donations. Plus the hours are more convenient than the church book fair.

Went there tonight, and was very pleased. We had tacos (steak and chicken), rice and beans and chips and salsa. Everything tasted fresh and homemade.

AND they were friendly. Who knew?!

I have rented from the party store on newark ave a couple of times. They have the basic tables, chairs, and linens, nothing fancy. They are very nice, and the prices are good. You have to reserve in person, and there are no refunds if you cancel, only store credit.

Re: catering

What sort of meal would you like to serve - a full dinner? Lunch? Are all of those restrictions for one person or different people?

Most caterers are used to working around dietary restrictions, and if they can't buld the whole meal around them, will at least come up with a special plate for the person with the restrictions. Even if you're not going with a full service caterer, most restaurants can handle requests like that.

If it's just one person with that many dietary needs, maybe their invitation will just, um, you know, get lost in the mail and you won't have to deal with it. ;) I remember once I had a big brunch for family, and made a huge effort to accomodate someone on Atkins, only to have them complain that they didn't like eggs...

Aw, I really like Al. But he is pretty nosy. The lady you mentioned has always been nice to me for some reason, but definitely do not move into her house! Her son used to steal produce from the community garden all the time.

We've lived there for nearly three years. Love the neighborhood. It is usually pretty quiet, and I have never felt unsafe coming home alone at night (though my bike was stolen from where it was locked in our garage). Some highlights of the area include the Brunswick Community Garden, Madame Claude and the Brunswick Window. Pecoraro's is also very close, yum.

I think the look of the neighborhood turns some people off, because there is for some reason always a ton of garbage in the street. Also most of the buildings have crappy old siding. But it's a very friendly and nice place to live.

Nudnik...haven't heard that word since my grandma died. Love it.

But that stinks about the fountain. Is it a closed system, or does the water drain somewhere?

I talked to my vet about it once, and he speciifcally said not to get VPI. They are the biggest, but it's really hard to get money from them...that was his opinion (Dr. Hatch at Secaucus Animal Hospital). Sorry I can't be more helpful than that...try posting this on the yahoo group DogJC and see what people say...good luck!

I don't know... By that same logic, that post net is more "real" because of that certain je ne se quois, would you also say that Celeste from MWL or Brian from Park and Sixth or Alice from Madame Claude or the sweet lady from Sava (the list could go on and on) are less real because they are friendly (and in my opinion awesome) to all their customers? They are all in the same small business boat.

I haven't enjoyed my experiences at post net. If you have, that's great. Perhaps we should all agree to disagree.

It's tough with the cheap places...usually you sacrifice cleanliness, unfortunately. I recently bought my own tools to bring. Target sells a little kit with everything in it for about $8.

There is a new place opening on Newark Ave near Monmouth St. Maybe they will be better.

I'd tear down the abandoned repair shop on my block and build a movie theater. I'd buy the embankment and turn it into a nature preserve. I'd eat steak frites from Madame Claude every day. I'd get Melvin an apartment. I'd take over the city and run it as a dictator.

I used Sachiko Yanase ( http://www.sachikohairmake.com/ ) and she was wonderful. She's based in Queens but came to our apartment in JC to to hair and makeup for me and my bridesmaids. PM me if you like to see pictures of our makeup. It was very natural.

I did a trial with her beforehand, and she tried like 10 hair styles.

She was the most affordable pro that I came across in my research. Good luck and congrats!
