I thought the Van Vorst House on Palisade held the title as oldest house in the Heights.

There are a couple of these in the Heights and I am always so curious as to what they look like on the inside (see also: the red brick castle-y looking house with the turret at Griffith and Palisade).

I saw this listing on Zillow a few weeks ago and started laughing out loud. On one hand, it is very hoarder-y. On the other hand, it's like walking into a time capsule. I'm in awe that they just rolled with the olde-timeyness of it.

Van Vorst is the oldest house in the Heights. I saw other listings for this house (32 Griffith) that put its age in the late 1800's. Realtors, like used car salesmen, are notorious for exaggerating.
You peaked my curiosity and I looked it up. I can't believe that the building that houses Sanai's is the oldest building in Hudson County.

I worked in postwar Sarajevo and the roads were much better than Pacific. I spend a lot of time in Detroit and Pacific is far worse than anything I've come across there.

Also Johnston from Woodward to Pacific - the blacktop has contoured to the undulation of the paving underneath. If you haven't experienced it, it's worth a trip to be reminded of the value of passable infrastructure.

But hey, Berry Lane Park, right?

remember Columbus Dr 6-7 years ago? I always felt embarrassed having friends visit me and that's their intro to Jersey City - a road that looked like it had been hit with mortars.

The Seastreak ferry takes you to Fort Hancock, which isn't all that far from the beach, depending on what part of the beach you want to get to. The nude beach (Gunnison) is the closest one, if that's what you're into. Or the other beaches are 20-30 minute walk.

Or just take a bike with you and enjoy a nice bike ride around the park.

Why? That's just weird.

Is it because they think people can't take the bottle home? If it's a bottle you brought there you can definitely take it home. Even if you buy a bottle at a restaurant, you're still allowed to take home the unfinished portion if it gets corked up. This is allowed by state law under a "doggy bag" provision.

Anyway, the restaurant looks good, I can't wait to check it out when they open. Hope they don't get held up too much longer.

It's Me Casa, Incrediballs & Chopping Block that have been in the Heights on Fridays for the last two weeks. They're always in front of Palisade Liquors and at least last week, the Distillery Gallery opened up to let people sit in there and eat since it was raining.

Incrediballs lives up to its name, I haven't tried the other two. Also, El Chilango seems to now be in the Heights daily in front of Palisade Liquors.

I haven't tried the ME Casa truck food, but I have visited their restaurant many times and it is always delicious. I wish it was a little larger in there, and with better ventilation, but the chef is super friendly and accommodating, their food is delicious and plentiful, and their prices are very reasonable.

Me Casa's food is delicious and the people that work there are all very friendly. I've taken my family there a few times and they've always loved it. Definitely recommend hitting it up. Haven't picked up anything from the truck yet though.

That $2.25 million triplex is pretty awesome, though that top floor with the sink in the bedroom/living area is a little odd. Cool building.

A similar building (historic church turning into condos) that's wrapping up is Boniface Lofts, though all the units sold before going on the market, so no open house. Good to see these beautiful buildings being saved rather than being torn down, though I know some people disagree with it.

I don't think ANYONE would be surprised by that statement. That's the story of JC and new businesses. How sad that nothing has changed. I thought Fulop had said during his campaign that the Building Department would be overhauled to attract more entrepreneurs. What happened?

The mayor spoke on the air last night during their call in fundraiser. He supports the station and stated he listens to it. Let's hope this helps.
We'll they're open now, so not much help needed at this point.

It's a great spot. The capacity isn't all that high, unfortunately. I went to Pay Byrne's prove it all night a little while ago and a bunch of people had to stand. Which isn't a bad thing, it's great to see that they're drawing a good crowd. It's really exciting to finally start getting some venues in JC.

Always a nice surprised to see somebody other than myself posting about the shop.

During the class we sample some beers, and during the last class we had some cool fresh pretzels and popcorn. The students also brewed the beer themselves, with a bit of guidance from us. Students also get a coupon for homebrew supplies. Check it out, it's a fun date night too!

Re: Possible wedding venue?

I know I'm late to the party here, but I've had friends get married at the Loews Theater and at Parlay Studios, both of which are fantastic spaces and great for weddings. The Loews is of course an absolutely beautiful theater and a great backdrop for a wedding. Parlay was fantastic because they've got a bar set up and lots of space for seating and dance floor area.

The other places mentioned, Grace Church and HCCC Culinary Center are great too. The Knights of Columbus Hall in Bayonne would probably be good as well.

And the Harborside Financial Center frequently hosts weddings and special events, though they've been under renovation for a bit, not sure when the atrium is reopening. They do catering themselves though.

So those are my recommendations. Also, in a bit of shameless self promotion, if you host a wedding (or any event) at a place like Parlay or the Loews or Grace Church, where you can bring your own drinks, please give us a shout! We've worked with several weddings and will spend time to find stuff that works in your budget, deliver everything, and we have a buyback program.

I haven't been there for almost a year now, but the deli in the ground floor of 10 Exchange Place (directly across from the PATH station) makes a surprisingly good breakfast sandwich. Sausage egg & cheddar on a croissant, that's my jam. I went there for breakfast a few times a week for a solid 5 years, and it never disappointed.

Yeah I only made 4 quarts. Don't have time to make any more, unfortunately.

I made Turkish red lentil soup as well, didn't think anyone else would be making it. In my travels through Turkey it has always been my go to meal for something cheap and filling.

I used to live in East Orange and there's a sign for the Holland Tunnel on Glenwood Ave for some reason. It's really odd, because there are no follow-up signs on any other street.

It looks like it may have been removed though, I don't see it on google maps anymore.

Why wouldn't they be able to have a liquor license, there is a liquor store and another restaurant with one with half a block from there?
There are laws that prevent a liquor license from moving farther than a certain distance away from its current location, as well as prevent bar/restaurant licenses from moving within a certain distance from another bar/restaurant. I forget what the distances are. This is why restaurant row is such a big deal, because it removes both of these restrictions, and allows bar/restaurants immediately next to each other, and for licenses to relocate from anywhere within the city.

And yes, you need to be 250 feet from a school or church. The distance is measured from the main entrance of each building, along the street. This distance might be sufficient for GP's, or they got a variance by getting approval from the neighborhood association.

Jersey City Brew Club bus trip to Troegs & Weyerbacher breweries

The Jersey City Brew Club is taking a bus trip to visit Weyerbacher and Troegs breweries on Saturday the 17th. There are still some tickets available, but they won't last too long. The trip includes beer on the bus, as well as a tour and beer at Weyerbacher, and we'll have the barrel room at Troegs for an open bar and food.

You don't have to be a JCBC member to attend, but the cost for non-members includes annual dues so you get access to events like this in the future.

That's odd, because they've been blocking off that street and digging it up for at least a week now. I think the contractors that were digging up the sidewalk must have busted something open.

And yes, there are occasionally 18-wheelers that get stuck in front of White Star. A couple months ago there were two of them at that intersection stuck in place because they couldn't make the turn.

Wow that's a huge bummer, it will be missed.

And while White Eagle is a very large venue that might not be too great for small local bands, the two restaurants down below White Eagle Hall will both have space for musicians, so I expect you'll be able to see smaller performances there.

How do the bees know which flowers are organic -- when they are making the organic honey?
I know this was a joke, but a lot of apiaries will ship their beehives to farms around the country to pollinate the crops, which is how you get specific blueberry, raspberry, buckwheat, etc honeys. If the farmers for that field are doing organic farming, then your honey is organic.

Some of the honey we have is from NJ bees and NJ crops, others like the Orange honey are from Florida crops, though that apiary (Fruitwood Orchards) doesn't mention anything about being organic.

For wildflower honeys, I'm not sure you could ever be sure it's organic, though I assume our Pine Barren honey is, as I can't imagine anyone is spraying the Pines with pesticides.

The Jersey City Public Library is an absolute gem and has served me well through the years. Beyond just the books (of which I've read many), it's a great place to check out movies, and when I didn't have a printer, it was a quick and cheap place to get prints.

And I know it serves as an important resource for people to access the internet and use computers for free, which is very important for those that may not have the money to do so on their own.

Libraries seem to be shifting away from books and focusing more on becoming free computer labs, which is great, but I would be sad should the books ever disappear altogether.

Beer-making classes at HCCC this Winter
#90
Home away from home
Home away from home

We did a series of beer and cider-making classes at our shop this Summer, but we've now paired up with Hudson County Community College to do some classes at their Culinary Conference Center. They have an awesome kitchen there, and it's going to be a lot of fun brewing a beer with some professional equipment.

During the class we brew a beer so you get a hands-on, in-person demo of everything you need to know, as well as some history and interesting facts. We also taste different styles of beer, and the HCCC will be making some fresh pretzels to pair. Students also get a discount on homebrew stuff.

Dates available:
Sunday, January 25, 2015 6pm-9pm
Sunday, February 22, 2015 6pm-9pm
Sunday, March 22, 2015 6pm-9pm

You can sign up by visiting the shop, or on the HCCC's website (search for "Brew").
