Ah yes, you're one of those inconsiderate, self important and lazy types who think that blocking both traffic and carts trying to get up the limited curb ramps there is their prerogative. I can't stand people who park in front of the stores, or actually in the parking lanes, blocking everyone while their VIP shopper is inside. Apparently your respect is only for property and not for people.

I say BRAVO to the BJ's employee!!

If you really are incapable of actually parking and are going to be rude, at least park in a handicapped space and get out in the rare occasion when there are none vacant for a genuinely handicapped person.

I Know this was covered in another thread, but maybe it got ditched in one of the server changes.

My faves are the grilled meats and or spring rolls with vermicelli rice noodles, pork and the beef rolls are great. I always add teh vinegary fish sauce they give you with some hoisin and sriracha hot sauce. Also great is the squid in satay sauce. It's not a peanut satay, but a spicy fish saucy dish, with lots of onions. Finally, Salmon in Special Veitnamese sauce in a crock is a salty caramelized onion dish.

Just a few months ago, Fulop endorsed a slate of candidates backed by Democrats for Hudson County over the HCDO slate. Not only did he back a rival group's candidates, but one member of the HCDO's slate was Sandra Bolden Cunningham -- the widow of Glenn Cunningham, the late Jersey City mayor who supported Fulop's entry into local politics. Cunningham's HCDO slate ultimately won.

Critics argue that Fulop's endorsement shows his political naivet?. "That's something that he never should have done," said one HDCO source. "The fact that he backed a loser was bad enough in itself, but the mistake was compounded because he went against the widow of the man that gave him his start in politics. It just shows that he is not ready for a seat at the big table yet."

It's a hoot that they think Fulop not supporting Bolden-Cunningham was a naive faux pas, but her climbing in bed with her husband's sworn enemies was Hudson County business as usual.

Reality check: HE WAS BEING CONSISTENT! A rare commodity around here.

Its the gas grills that get more attention, particularly on balconies. It's illegal to store the gas indoors, or even transport it through the building. That's a problem even if you have a rowhouse with no access to your yard other than through the house.

There's also some reg I don't recall about a minimum distance from the building.

Re: Defeating challenge ran up $56,000 in bills -- McCANN WANTS BOARD OF EDUCATION TO PAY HIS LAWYER
Home away from home

Step back and make this a generic situation rather than one charged with McCann's history.

Making a school board candidate, often a lay citizen, liable for tens of thousands of dollars in legal bill if a well funded group challenges their election, can make a an effective intimidation barrier to people entering such races if they are not backed by another well heeled group. Thus we again resign ourselves to the politics of money, corporations and corruption. This is not at all a judgement of Jenny, but a reason not to set precedent due to disliking one character.

The onslaught that Councilwoman Dawn Zimmer in Hoboken is under from the well funded real estate puppet Campos is another example of how to sink someone with legal bills. but it will call for Dawn to raise tens of thousands more to stay in the game, which starts to resemble high stakes poker.

One more way that our democracy is sold to the highest bidder, whether at the national or the local retail level.

In fact, they said they watched us go to the mall. How weird, they did not see us subsequently go to two other stores in the Plaza. It is such a scam. Sorry, but in your case they were doing their job. They can't be expected to monitor your every move. The Metro plaza businesses pay for that parking and it's being stolen by people going to the mall and the train. I've been unable to find a spot in the Pep Boys lot and gone into the store to find it empty. Where are the people in those 50 cars out there?

Next time go to the plaza store first.

That the mall charges for short term parking is the real scandal. I don't know why the mall tenants tolerate it, the management is making a small buck, but they must be losing many times that in lost sales.

This stuff makes me queasy. It's all a game, and heads they win, tails we lose.

It's suspected that the reason North Bergen got a sweetheart 1/3 price deal on access to our sewer system is to suck up to Sacco, who's got the big stick. This is why we have floods, that the MUA is always being leveraged for political purposes.

What Steve does is up to him, but I wouldn't trust these guys in the HCDO snakepit.

I'm glad this thread finally took off, I thought it would scroll off into oblivion. While I agree with the point that any experienced pol appoints those he's had experience with, there's another corrupt level for the completely unqualified yet connected, like Michael Brown, of FEMA fame. My memory may be rose tinted, but I recall most of Clintons Arkansas crew were well qualified, at least those in FEMA.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect professionalism from our public employees, and shining a spotlight on how they got their jobs other than qualifications is blow for good government, which the Lord know we need some of. I have no idea of Mr. Smiths qualifications other than a connected powerful father, but if by compiling a list of similar families that have a high incidence of management level public jobs we can see a pattern emerge, then perhaps conclusions may be drawn.

If our city were perfectly run, maintained and financially fit, this would be a non-issue. It's not and we pay the price for the bunglers who wheel & deal while we stand knee deep in sewage.

We all know examples of cronyism and nepotism in JC. What do you say to gathering all we know into master list? It could be a real eye opener.

I'll start with 2 I've recently had interactions with:

Eileen Gaughan: Daughter of of councilman Bill Gaughan, appointed Chair of the MUA. Qualifications to run an agency with a budget of tens of millions of dollars? None, reportedly not even a bachelors degree.

Kip Smith, supervisor at JC Incinerator Authority. Son of former councilman Harvey Smith. Response to this complaining citizen: "Your taxes don't pay my salary"

What other gems are out there? The JCPD should be good for half a dozen entries at least.

Yesterday I was going out to an appt. Somebody double parked behind me in a space large enough to allow someone to drive into it rather than parallel park. The guy parked a little too close to my bumper. To be honest, I might have been able to wriggle out of the space but I'm not going to take the chance I damage his car. So I have to wait. Blow the horn. And wait. Blow the horn and wait some more.

I've never understood this. If you're just running in for a minute, why not just use the parking spot?

That's easy, they're both lazy and inconsiderate. I see this all the time, a double parked car is a real hazard when you're cycling on a busy through street like Monmouth. People are too lazy to parallel park, or park and walk a few car lengths rather than double park right in front of their destination. My other favorite is the stop in the middle of traffic to let someone out, in, or to just chat with a passerby.

NAS, what kind of rates do you pay for that? I figure I need to be significantly cheaper if I have a funky old walkup rather than a fancy highrise place.

FAB, part of my plan is not to have tenants who stay too long, so there are enough open times for my own guests!

INJC, yeah, you're exactly the kind of people we'd like to help out. We're not up to running a fancy hotel, just a decent crashpad. I'll probably know within a month or 2 if he's leaving.

Probably, but as Scottacus said, this is pretty commonly done under the radar as a casual type deal. In NYC they inaccurately call it "bed & breakfast" and even have agencies to place guests. This is how I believe Elmagnifico rented in Newport.

I see a lot of people in Manhattan doing something like this on Craigslist, so it seems like it could work. I think you could even have a slightly lower rate for people who are staying like two weeks or a month, since you would have more stable occupancy -- and it's nice for people in a long-term-stay situation to have a kitchen.

The only issue I see is that it can be difficult screening people, so you don't end up with a trashed apartment. Maybe there are services (something beyond PayPal) that allow you to accept credit card numbers as a deposit and in case there are any damages to the place upon check-out.

I would certainly make deals for longer occupancies, but I hadn't thought of the security deposit issue while I was thinking of this as a friends and neighbors personal connection thing. Hmm, as you say, there must be a way.

Market for a short stay furnished apartment in HP?
Home away from home

We've had a tenant in one of our 1 bedroom apartments who lives elsewhere, but is here frequently enough on business to rent a pied a terre from us. We got into the habit of "renting back" days from him for our relatives to stay in the place when they visited, if he was not there. But he may be giving up his job, and apartment here.

My question is, what do you folks think of the idea of keeping the place open as a furnished "short stay hotel" for friends, neighbors and Listers with limited space to put up their out of town visitors? If I had a 30% occupancy rate I should be able rent it for $100/night and make almost as much as leasing, which is all I'd really want, besides having a place for my own visitors to stay. I have no idea if that occupancy is feasible.

Would anyone here be a possible customer if I did this? Yeah, I Know there's some cheap motels on Tonnnelle, but this is right in the hood, at half the price of the Doubletree. There'd be no room service, but I could stack some takeout menus which would be much cheaper!

Perhaps we should reevaluate the use of identification every else in our lives rather than require even more ID.

Have you tried getting a NJ driver's license in the last few years? Its almost as hard as getting a JC parking permit with "points of identification" and original copies of birth certificates and proof of name change-- the problem is now its supposed to be a form of identification rather than simply a license to operate a motor vehicle.

Meanwhile, can anyone point out where it says you have to show ID to travel? We've come to accept that showing a photo ID at an airport is mandatory. Now there is a "no fly list" which is nearly impossible to get off of and for which people get on for no apparent reason. So in essence, now we need permission from the government to travel within in the country. What next, ID badges to get on the subway? To cross the Hudson River?

My understanding (from hearing a radio piece by someone who has done this) is you are not actually required show to the airline ID, but come early & be prepared for a fine tooth comb search if you don't. Showing your ID gives you a "privilege" of a relatively fast trip through security.

Much controversy come from people confusing rights and privileges. Driving is a privilege, you have no constitutional right to it. There was a case, in Florida I believe, of a woman who wanted her license photo taken with her muslim eyeslit veil on. She sued for her "right" to drive! Can you imagine!

I have yet to figure out why the opponents of a national ID automatically equate a positive ID with brownshirts being able to demand your "papers please!" without the probable cause they need by our laws and constitution. We already have ID's, they're just bad and inconsistent. We have a SS# which is everywhere but banks insist on thinking is a secret, which with a few relatively easy to acquire pieces of data will unlock your bank account. But, as anyone who has had a credit card stolen knows, they don't even need that to defraud thousands of dollars, which we all pay for even if the victim doesn't.

The system is broken and the fantasy that we can have a 21st century culture without a better form of ID is denial. An ID neither gives nor takes away rights, it simply makes the system we already have for voting, security, etc, work. And yes, when we have a train bomb attack like in London or Madrid we may get to the point of ID to board the trains, because the people will clamor for protection by their government.

A system of giving up freedoms for security is pretty much a definition of what good governments do. The bad ones take away freedoms without benefiting the people. For better or worse, it's up to the people to figure out the difference.

I've posted this anecdote before, but with the ephemeral archives of JCList, I'll repeat it.

A year or so ago I was walking through the park and I see the dog owners scrambling to get their dogs on leash. I look around and here comes 2 bike cops. Do they ticket? No. What they do is verbally reassure the dog owners that they are NOT going to ticket them!

Hows that for going from turning a blind eye to actually condoning lawbreaking!

Any questioning of the PD brass about "quality of life" enforcement simply gets you the standard "undermanned force" speech. So simple it's beautiful.
