Re: Dan Levin in talks to run with Healy
Home away from home
Home away from home

This only proves that Fulop isn't as adept at running a machine like Healy....but I suspect that he will adapt to this very quickly.

Like I have said before Fulop could beat Healy but he needs his machine to pull in some of Healy's allies or support...other wise it will be very close. And probably Healy will win it.

As a registered Republican, I voted for him because with his strong credentials in being AG...he would be much cleaner than Corizine. And for the most part, I do believe he is.

His sham surprise at the recommended PATH/NJTRANSIT increase and then not really doing anything about it. That whole thing was done to make us swallow large increases without getting anything in return...like auditing the PA and stopping the patronage mill. That whole episode turned me off to him.

I think he could have taken a stronger stand against the NYPD spying on citizens. So much for the constitution(you know the law of the land).

If the democrats can come up with a decent candidate, i will not vote for Christie.

Re: Cory Booker

I agree with Moto. I have spent alot of time in Newark and came to luv the city. It is brimming with potential and many decent people.

Booker really needs to stay one more term. I do feel he owes it to the city. And he needs to put the same kind of energy in attracting attention to Newark in other areas. Like crime and economic policy. Some of the monies raised through private donations should have been diverted to the police force because way too many officers were cut.

Also, development has not been very transparent and in my opinion too rich with abatements. I don't think it will benefit the city in the long haul. He needs to balance the public and private interest more evenly.

I am not sure if there are proper mechanisms in place to oversee the private donations and funding that Newark has gotten. And fear they will not be properly used.

I read the article liked it. But i did find it confusing in the end. Did she go back to the bf? It is confusing the way she wrote about that.

This is sad for everyone involved. Some people on here are assuming a whole lot.

For those who wish to get a bit more educated read this article from the NYT Mag about Midwives and Home Births.

What I learned is that home birth has its place when you contrast with the way most modern hospitals treat births and deliveries as akin to ordering a fast food meal.

I'll leave the politics to the rest of you fine folks. But I would buy eggs and honey locally sourced from JC as long as they were not NYC prices. :)

The last quote in that line is scary. Sheesh!

I remember a few years back a Coptic family was brutally slain....and most Copts i knew blamed/felt it had to muslim perpetrators.

It turned out to be two JC thug/junkies who were renting an apartment from the family.

So this idea that the two communities co-exist....is really not accurate....its more like a very cold, icy relationship. Alot of hate from both sides.

Re: Fulop Violating Pay-To-Play?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I just want to start off by saying that I would luv to see Healy go...and Fulop seems like he could beat him but his supporters should not be naive.

Is it possible that Fulop can win without building a machine or co-opting some of the very stooges/power brokers of Healy/JC??? I think it would be extremely difficult but not impossible.

Let's say Fulop beats Healy, in order to govern he is going to have to get in bed with some very unsavory characters and compromise with much of the opposition in order to get anything done. This is politics. Fulop is not a saint, he is a politician.

He knows this or should know this.

To his supporters, if he gets elected you need to hold him accountable or many of you will be posting lots of negative stuff about him on JClist in the future.

I have said this before. Vote, pay attention and hold all politicians accountable.

The Polish People have known this since time immemorial. I had a Polish friend who would bitterly talk about this every time anyone mentioned WWII.

As for the statue....I like it for some reason. Never saw it as something visually offensive.

This is terrible. There should be no increase until the PA is fully audited and most of the patronage jobs are cut and all the projects in the pipeline reexamined.

Obama is going to win because the Republican Ticket has not excited the base. Romney lacks the charisma(which really shouldnt count for anything if ur looking to elect someone) or presence that Obama has. Ryan was a good choice but he is more a fiscal conservative than a social conservative.

Again both parties and 99 percent of politicians suck.

It all comes down to which side will be able to wrangle in more sheep on election day....anyone who thinks these farces are about change and ideas and what is good for the common man needs a good kick in the face. :)

Re: Good and Relatively Close Beach to Jersey City???
Home away from home
Home away from home

I still think LBI or Point Pleasant are the way to go. LBI has many types of beaches and has lots of interesting places to see. And at LBI you are not going to get alot or riff raff or trouble making folks. You go to Bradley Beach, Seaside Heights or Coney....you are going to get lots of douches.

Two things i noticed with LBI...is that there isn't much diversity of folks....at least so far as i have observed. The other problem is that some of the most beautiful stretches of beach is blocked by people's large mansions....even though it's suppose to be public access....sometimes u have to go out of ur way.....or literally risk going through their property which can present a problem.

The most important thing is to have everything in writing. I can't stress that enough and make sure to have it dated and signed and also have a witness. Doing all this is not hard...but people just never get it done.

You could have had the contractors that work for Lowes, Home Depot or Sears do it and for a whole lot less.

You need to get all your money back....start calling Consumer Affairs, or the Better Business Bureau ......or one of the local tv channels that help duped people like you get a decent outcome. Good luck.

This is just an observation. But to me there seems to be an increase of non-black residents near the Danforth and Richard stations of all back grounds....asians, hispanics, whites....many seem to be young professional types...and even a few hipsters. I do believe Greenville still has lots of rough edges but....now would be a good time to buy property.....because i do believe this area will gentrify in the coming years.

Could that reporter get any closer....sheesh!

Although its nice to have a BBQ....and maybe lecture about not committing violence but this really achieves nothing.

By now the parents have failed to teach there kids how to behave and be responsible(its not a good sign you need a politician and community activist to try to get the message across).

You know what will help any struggling community especially in terms of violence?

1. Parents being parents.
2. More cops on the street.
3. Parents emphasizing education(academic or technical)....and the city making sure they have the tools to deliver that.
4. Investment in social services with an emphasis on job training.

Alot of this is lost on certain residents of this city.....and much of the current city administration.

I agree JCIA needs serious reform. It's basically a patronage mill.

I doubt this is about racism....but why doesn't Fulop and the others just produce the record(votes, resolutions, statements...etc) that show that when the "others" got their cushy benefits....they were pretty much dead set against it as well????

Hard facts like that should shut up those claiming racism....which can too easily divide people, especially the regular folks of any city.

What a gorgeous building. I am surprised no one has tried to bring it back to life especially because of all the artistic, creative and can do types that make up Brooklyn.

I have been meaning to watch a movie inside the Jersey Loews for a while. I keep checking their website to see if they will have anything in August but nothing so far.

Kicking myself for missing the movie "Mothra" that they played in July. Am a big Godzilla(and Company) nerd.

Re: Voting should be mandatory
Home away from home
Home away from home

First, I think all local, state and national elections should take place in the same time frame. If possible give everyone a day or two off to vote.

Second, all campaigns should be publicly financed. The time frame for actual electioneering should be limited. All candidates should get equal access if not time in the news media. All of this can be overseen by a robust election commission. I would make it illegal for all profit making corporations from having any say in elections or the process. And make it illegal for them to setup non-profit groups for the sole purpose of influencing the elections.

Third, all people have to go to the voting booths. They can be given the option to press a button that says "do not care to vote".

That's what i would do.
