Missing from his story......Was he offered a bribe? If so, why didn't he report it? If not, then he really can't claim he "didn't take the bait."

I'm so cynical of the Healy team right now, that I not sure I even believe him at all, unless the FBI confirms they met. He could be making this up to make him seem like a good guy, or distancing himself from those guilty. Nothing surprises me these days.

They weren't here for the cheaper rent, or because they couldn't afford to live in NYC, they were here because this was and is home to them and us. We know these individuals as classmates, sons, daughters, fathers, husbands and friends. Some of these good people got caught doing unsavoring things; but they are still human beings that deserve their day in court. I am a home owner, paying massive taxes, and I don't like it anymore that anyone else. But enought already, everyone will get their due, if they are proven guilty then they will go to jail. For those that call for Vega resignation, you don't know him, not the real person. For years he sponsored ski clinics, soccer and baseball teams for City children. He supported the arts, the museusm, the JC reservoir teaching children to fish; he is a wonderful father and great husband. That is the Mariano that many people know, we feel hurt and disgusted by all this, he is not proud of this, his family isn't either-but if you compare the good with the bad -the good will win.

I'm tired of people speaking up for criminals because of "all the good they've done for the city."

If a man brings his wife flowers and candy every night, but is banging her sister Wednesday afternoons, that doesn't make him a good husband? If I pat one dog on the head and turn around and kick another, that does not make me a friend to animals?

He was caught on tape taking bribes. This crime isn't a barfight or peeing on someone - this directly has to do with his job. How do I know his next council vote isn't influenced by another bribe? Power corrupts.

Yes there's corruption everywhere, but not every city has Brian Williams talking about it nationwide. Or let's say most politicians are corrupt. That means our politicians weren't smart enough not to get caught, which means they should go.

No one here grew up with Lopez, I don't think.

This intersection is awful. Some people don't realize a blinking red light means a stop sign. People coming the other way don't realize a blinking yellow means proceed with caution. They either speed thru, or the opposite which is almost come to a complete stop - then speed up, faking out the cars coming the other way who think they are being let thru. They should just get rid of the lights and put in 4 stop signs.

Re: RALLY/PROTEST WEDNESDAY, 29TH CITY HALL AT 9:00AM

My first City Council Meeting. Thought it was a good one to go to.

Arrived around 9:30. I expected a bigger rally turn out, but not surprised due to the time. Seemed more mild than I expected.
About a dozen people walking in a circle with signs. No Chanting.
Levin and some other guy (sorry I forgot your name) spoke for a few minutes each.

Went and got a seat. Meeting started half hour late. Vega reread his statement that he wasn't resigning which was met with boos. Then accused the press of ransacking Flood's council office. After some procedural stuff, finally it was time for people to speak (5 minutes each). I'd say a 5th of the people signed up to speak didn't show. About fifty listed in all. First few had nothing to do with Vega/corruption scandal. I guessed because they may have signed up to speak first, before the recent scandal. One of the first speakers had a good point. If Healy thinks the others accused should be suspended without pay, why not the elected officials? So the next few speakers asked for Vega to resign. Some Healy as well.
Someone said innocent till proven guilty - don't let the lynch mob mentality ruin someone. Referenced Ox-bow incident (great movie). Some dude got up and he lived by me. Started badmouthing politics and media, then transitioned into 9/11 conspiracies. Maybe I won't introduce myself. Levin asked for Healy, Lopez and Vega to resign. He needs to work on his public speaking. I like what he was saying but seemed a bit all over the place and his tone was monotonous. Someone said to make Fulop Council President. People started to rehash. Started losing me. Went outside for a smoke break when I didn't think the last speaker was going to be interesting. Got interviewed for channel 4 (I think). Answered a few questions, saying I think Healy and Vega should resign and that Shaw was a sad consequence. Was nervous and will probably look like an idiot.

After the speakers there was a short break. Voted on resolutions/ Fulop's to remove Vega was shot down. Bunch of other BS. Then over about 2PM. I'm missing something I know.

I thought Fulop was the only one who showed any leadership.
(People here know I'm a supporter of his, I'll admit I'm biased). Maybe it's the recent allegations, but they all seemed smug. I can't believe they all have no comment about what's happening and pretending it's business as usual.

"Jersey City police and Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio declined to characterize the death pending an autopsy, but three officials with knowledge of the investigation said multiple bottles of pills were found near Shaw's body.

One of the officials said that while investigators suspect suicide, they did not want to jump to conclusions because Shaw suffers from an unspecified medical condition. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the probe was in its early stages."

Without commenting on the veracity of the charges, specifically what about this situation makes Council President Vega unable to do his job?

Many on this forum were unhappy with his governance before these arrests. What difference does it make to his actual 'nuts and bolts' governance now?

Seems like the longtime critics may feel somewhat vindicated by this situation -- but again, what difference does it make? What evidence is there that he will govern any 'worse' -- now that he is the subject of a federal complaint -- than he did before?

Specifics would be appreciated. Thank you.

He was "specifically" arrested for corruption of his "nuts and bolts" job.

The sting was from only one guy wearing a wire. How many other bribes has he taken to vote any way on any variety of issues.

The evidence isn't circumstantial. He is on tape. Let's say he stays at his job and is then found guilty. Should every vote between now and then be redone?

As someone who was a strong supporter of Healy's team, and worked on Guy Catrillio's campaign, how did you feel when your man took a bribe? Be Specific.

Ha ha ha ha, they got you just like they fooled Fulop!! It works every time!

It's REGISTERED VOTERS, not who actually voted, which means if only 50% of registrants voted (that's what I recall), you need to get signatures of 50% of all people who actually voted. Pretty steep hill. In California it takes 12% of the number of votes cast in the previous elections.

I'll admit I read JCmom's posted article wrong.

If this indeed turns out to be Healy, Thats seems just as incriminating as the "Allstate." quote.

Not a big Healy fan, but never thought he was as bad as people here thought. Thought he could be an oaf at times (doorstep and bar incidents), but not so horrible.

My little confidence in him is, like many others, all gone.
Two members (Catrillo and Vega) and his campaign treasurer arrested (after touting the crime issue), and Lopez not properly vetted.

Even if he escapes prosecution, or is even indeed innocent, this is enough for me to want him out of office.

So my question is, what do we, as citizens, need to do to get a special election. A lawsuit? Collect signatures? I will stand at the path station collecting them.

Even if that is Healy, he could play ignorant. I'm not a big Healy fan, but for all we know he was. If they had something on him they would of rounded him up today. Still puts him in a bad light.

Also, NBC news said Healy said everyone involved is being suspended without pay. Don't know why I think that's funny but I do. Maybe because he ran on the crime issue, it's going on under his nose, and when it's revealed that's all he can do.

A photograph taken of an individual on public property for the non-commercial use of the photographer is generally fair game and no consent or formal release is required, as far as I'm aware. It can be posted on Flickr or any other photo-sharing site. Ethically there may be other arguments, and a Flickr search on the terms "candid + [insert name of body part]" highlights that. However, don't forget the Constitutional principles upon which in part the laws of the United States are based. I'm not thrilled by the idea of a stranger taking my photograph without my knowledge or permission, but I'm thankful that he or she is entitled to do so.

To the OP, I agree that sounds like an odd scene, but it's probably harmless. It's unlikely she would have asked permission otherwise.

That's how I understand it. I've actually had a heated discussion about it recently.

If a photographer takes your photo on the street, since it is considered "art," it can hang in a gallery, become his/her most prized photo, sell prints - all without your consent. They can even photograph into your house thru your window.

As soon as they want to use it to sell a product, i.e. use the photo in an advertisement, like the Times article link here, they need your permission.

It's weird that she asked you to step out of frame. It's nice she at least asked permission. If you ever ask her about it let us know.

Re: Parking Too Close to Crosswalks

I live close to there. It is a serious problem in the whole area.
In New Jersey you cannot park:

-Within 25 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, or side line of a street or intersection highway, except at alleys

-Within 50 feet of a stop sign

yet they never ticket for it.

While painted curbs may mark an illegal parking spot or deter parking, it is not officially illegal to park at a painted curb. Otherwise I could just go out and paint the curb in front of my house.
