That would be nice - simple tickets instead of towing - but the owner/manager of the lot is not a law enforcement agency and wouldn't be able to enforce the tickets. People could simply ignore them, throw them out. So that would never happen.

kind of like how the parking authority justifies giving tickets to people at illegally posted handicapped spots on the last day of the month to fit their quota then...you go into the store, there's no signs, you come out and there are signs in buckets filled with cement conveniently in front of your ticketed car. what a scam that entire lot is. everyone's got their hand in that cookie jar.

Re: how is there only ONE post office in downtown JC?
Home away from home

i love the heights post office. it's conveniently located right next to the parking authority. the line is usually a minimum of 15-20 minutes to get to the window, so within that time frame the meter runs out (they are also 20 minute meters outside of the vicinity) and you end up coming outside to a wonderful ticket just because you need to mail or pick up something.

to save this trouble, i honestly drive out to the post office in secaucus on county ave. they have a parking lot and you're in and out. it's a bit of a hassle to get there driving behind slow tractor trailers and definitely out of the way, but it saves the parking woes and the treatment from the staff is just a tad bit nicer.

I got a ticket for going through a stop sign, I had stopped but I guess it wasn't long enough for a JCPD staked out at the corner. The ticket was $85 and 2 points, I thought the fine was a bit high. I went to JC traffic court where the the prosecutor offered to reduce the charges and no points if I gave them $400.00. I told my sister who is a lawyer about this and she was shocked they would offer this, which smells of extortion. I took the 2 points and paid the $85.00. The prosecutor offered this same deal to everyone who came to court.
I'm they will ask for alot more from you.

i highly doubt mark was a gang member. he was never really the gang type, more like a quiet class clown who slipped a quick one that made you laugh every time. there is obviously more to this story and it was more than well planned if the scumbag who did him in was able to flee the country. i hope for marks friends and family that this was not drug related. it it were, why did mark still have his jewelry and money on him at the time they found him?

Re: towing at shoprite?

great post jc73!

when i worked across from white castle on jfk blvd, i would catch people parking there to hit up india square only to be towed almost instantly. they'd literally go into white castle to use the bathroom or buy a soda and the parking lot guy would come in and ask if anyone owned that car while another guy sat on a porch across the st. on newark ave. that's how shop rite's lot used to be about 10 years ago, walkie talkie guys, tow trucks just hanging out ready to go... it's died down a lot since then believe it of not.

on alloy wheels they'd just slide i through a different opening on the same wheel.. i still don't understand how they boot standard wheels with cap covers, are they magnetic or something? i've never been booted, i just get a hell of a lot of tickets for zones and sweepers when i'm staying over other peoples houses.

knowing the parking authority, they'll figure out a way to over ride the anti theft boots just so they can make a few bucks for their quota.

Re: How do I Plead?
Home away from home
Home away from home

with parking tickets the only thing you can do is adjourn the date to get more time to come up with your evidence and etc. they don't allow you attorneys, there's no prosecutor, just the judge. just sign up at the end of the line so you can watch how other people behave and how the judge reacts to photos and etc.

these were things announced by the judge in her opening statement. nobody has the right to an attorney. courtroom #6 is for parking tickets, the other courts are for moving violations. people are separated so you don't waste much time.

i sat in court in east newark once with a friend who got 2 tickets in one night...what a pain waiting through testimonies of people for domestic disputes, owed money, moving violations, parking tickets... we were there almost 4 hours.

i was in an out of jersey city's courtroom in 45 minutes.

you have to plead not guilty to explain. just do it, the worst that could happen is that they find you guilty and tack on a court cost. it's worth the shot if you can get out of the fine. trust me, it was the biggest sigh of relief i've had in months not having to pay that fine because i'm broke.

My parents gave me a great idea. You don't have to have a case to sit in on traffic court so it may be a good idea to just sit in one night and listen to testimonies and how the judge reacts while building your testimony. It will probably help tremendously. I was extremely nervous while doing mine since I was called up after 3 people adjourned due to having their photos on cell phone cameras. I came prepared enough with good enough proof of an honest parking mistake. I really wish you luck.

Update - croft beats the parking authority's scam at BJ's lot
Home away from home
Home away from home

To ANYONE who has gotten a parking ticket for unknowingly parking in handicapped spots at Shop Rite & BJ's, you CAN beat these tickets. I DID. Today, 8/7, I went to court to fight a ticket for parking in an unmarked and improperly posed handicapped spot. For one, I am not lazy, nor did I try to cut corners, so before those insults and accusations come, it was something unintentional. I thought it was a regular spot as it was unmarked, ran into Shop Rite for some mussels for my job, and came outside to a ticket requiring a court appearance. Luckily, I learned fairly young to always keep a camera in the car. That camera saved me $250-300 in fines and court costs. The parking spots in between BJ's and Shop Rite are not properly marked. They list the old fine of $100 which has changed as of a few years ago. According to the state law, the establishment must change the signs in accordance with the amendment within 12 months. The signs are in portable cement filled buckets, and can be moved from spot to spot. Some of the signs are laying on the ground. The blue lines are faded into white and are barely noticeable. Basically, I took photos just minutes after I got the ticket. The judge dismissed my charges based on the provided photo evidence of the lack of signs, blue paint, and penalties posted, as well as the fact that the signs were movable (illegal) and could be tipped over or even used to mark non designated areas. Hopefully this will help in the future for others who have been ticketed and taken advantage of in this parking lot. One other thing I'd like to point out is that the judges are no longer accepting camera phones and digital cameras to view proof of evidence. They now require you to print everything onto photo paper where it is clear and visible. I watched 3 people prior to my case seek an adjournment so that they could get their evidence in order. Come prepared, be professional (dress nice, they tend to pay more attention to your case, and be polite), and be confident. <3 your friend croft

Re: How do I Plead?

i bet you that the parking authority needs to meet their quota so they hit up the private lots. most of the time, people just want to pay the fine and get it over with. there is a lot to be fought here for anyone who has gotten a ticket in this way. in the case of their improperly posted "reserved parking" signs with no posted fines/penalties, or even postings on the particular spots, i guess that is just working on the honor system in the same way as the pregnant lady spots....yet they find any way to milk a ticket out of you.

the spots between shop rite and bj's are not properly marked. the lines are not properly painted, the fines are posted in the wrong amount, the signs were laying on the ground for over a month, and the parking authority are the ones responsible for writing tickets there, even though metro plaza is considered to be a private lot.

so what do they do now, ticket every non pregnant looking person who parks in those expecting mothers only spots?

i saw a lot of the carts being recovered in the parking lot with the newly installed locks on them. all we have to do is keep calling bj's with the locations of their carts so they can scoop them up and put the locks on them.
