Re: Advice needed on a situation
Home away from home
Home away from home

To clarify - the sink was installed separately by a plumber 2 months ago. And 2 weeks ago, we had some ceiling work done by a separate contractor that caused the nicks on the vanity top's rim.

So what I'm struggling with is whether if I *should* ask for some compensation, or "let it go" since it's not very noticeable, and does not affect functionality (even though it's a brand NEW sink!!!).

I'm torn...

Advice needed on a situation
Home away from home
Home away from home

Here it goes - I had a contractor come in to do some work on my bathroom's ceiling. Unfortunately, an accident happened and something heavy fell on my 2-month "new" sink (which cost $300+, plus $160 to install).

There's no major damage to the sink (no cracks), however, along the rim (the sink and vanity top is one-piece - everything is ceramic), there are about 30 small nicks on the surface. They're not "easily visible", but if you look carefully, you can see them (and certainly feel them if you run a finger along the rim).

So - the damage is cosmetic, not highly visible (but if one look carefully, you can see them), and does not damage the functionality of the sink. I called the sink's manufacturer already and ask if it can be repaired (eg sanded down to be even). However, given the material of the sink, that's not recommended.

So at this point, instead of a new sink (installed 2 months ago), I have a sink that looks like it has 3-4 years of wear-and-tear on it already.

Should I chase down the contractor for some compensation?

What would be reasonable for me to ask for at this point?

Thanks in advance.

I know you mentioned JC, but if you're ever across the river, Century 21 by WTC also has a maternity section (on the top floor, I think).

Question about "One time refills" using Smartlink website
Home away from home
Home away from home

I have a question about the "one time refills" from the smartlink website - I know I have certain time for the "refill" to be added (I think it's two months?).

What happens if the refill is not added after that period (eg I didn't use my card during that period)? Is that automatically refunded back to my credit card, or do I have to follow up to have that refunded?

TIA.

Re: CDC confirms first Ebola case diagnosed in US

It baffles me A LOT that this doctor, and the nurse in Dallas who was planning her wedding, that given the fact they served Ebola patients on their own will, they're obviously non-selfish and have a lot of courage to work with this deadly disease.

However, once they're actually out of the hospital environment (ie dealing with an actual sick patient(s) directly), they cannot control themselves and did not think of all the potential risk they're posing to everyone else. I keep thinking of how the small businesses are impacted by Dr Spencer's "patronage".

Yes, I understand that while they're not showing symtons, they're not contagious, and yada yada yada all that.

But come on, they've seen first hand how scary this disease is. They know they're potentially at risk themselves. I know it's SUPER TOUGH to stay in your home for 21 days, but come on!!!!?!?!?!??!?!

Walked by today and saw a sign that this is their last week? I had no idea.

Does anyone know what's going on, and what's going to take over the place?

Sad to see it go...

I don't think the "smug" attitude is directly and specifically for her. For anyone who has dealt with government workers, any and ALL airport workers, and actually any and all low wage workers, their standard attitude is smug and contempt - even though they were not forced to do the job. Most of those people gave me the feeling that they're too good for their job.

I remember many years ago while I was applying for a US citizenship, I was SO SO SO upset with the attitude of the people that I dealt with that I almost said, "F&*K it, it's not worth my time to get the citizenship while I get treated like sh&t by these people.

Anyone who have gone through security check lines at the airport would have experienced such "smug: attitude.

Re: Leak On Roof
Home away from home

If you want to hold it over for a few days until your landlord return, just put a tarp over the area with the crack and weight the corners down with sandbags / bags of rice / etc. Of course, this will depend on the pitch of your roof to work properly.

Our skylight was leaking sometime ago, and while we waited for a new skylight to be ordered/made/delivered, we had a tarp over it, and it held out really well, and for a long time.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Pediatric Dentist - recommendations?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Looking for recommendations for pediatric dentists for my young kids - would prefer downtown jersey city (1st choice), or hoboken. Must be accessible via public transportation.

I know a few places have opened in the last few years, but don't know which ones are good / bad. We currently go to a place in NYC, but the commute back and forth is just too much.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!

It's very sad looking at the children growing up today / in this day and age - it's scary to think they'll grow up one day and become leaders / parents / teachers / etc themselves.

Yes, there are exceptions - however, these "exceptions" should have been the norm, rather than the few (hence "exceptions").

I have two kids of my own, and I observe the above from spending a lot of time at the park, and looking at my kids' friends.

You may say who am I to judge - I was brought up in China so I'd like to think that I have pretty good traditional values: such as respect, humility and honesty.

Isn't this place like, in the middle of nowhere? I know that's an exaggeration, but who goes to that building except the people who live there?

Is the Waterferry dock next to it still operating? Or did that close years ago?

Aaron - you have my respect on how you stay on the side of reason and patience on dealing with issue.

I think a lot of the people here "arguing" with you are coming from the point of a consumer, where as a business owner, you have to think of "business" - any owner not doing this should go and run a charity (wait - even a charity needs to balance the books!!!).

I've never been to Two Boots, but I'm going to come in this weekend to check it out myself!!!

PS Perhaps the key point for discussion is how can SID get the funding it needs without the prepared food vendors, in order to continue its operations!?!?!?

I'd dare say that they'd be "whining" too. Unfairness is unfairness and I'm sorry that some folks can't see that.

I'm going to sign off now because being a human pinata is starting to wear me down. I've got pizza to deliver.

Best to all.

Hey - there's ONE thing that the PATH is very good at: Throwing surprises at it's riders!!! By keeping bad news secret as long as possible, and only releasing it at the last minute (literally) to surprise us all!!! Like surprise birthday parties - hey, everyone loves surprise birthday parties, right???!!!

See, I finally managed to find something that the PATH is good at. There are indeed a handful of smart people working at PATH (I mean, in this day of internet and google, how do they manage to keep such things secret until last minute, with no leaks!!! Even Apple can't keep it's iPhone 6 a secret!!!)

Call me paranoid, but I strongly feel that the death is very suspicious, especially after the fact that Chuck showed his distaste and distrust for de Blasio in such a public manner.

Even if he did not suffer internal injuries, I bet the mayor's "assistants" helped bring along this tragedy. I don't think de Blasio can handle such a betrayal in public, without "getting even".

So sad....

Can these survive outside through the winter? I see that they need to be planted by Nov 1? I plan to plant these in planters on the front stoop.

No, I don't. I commute to midtown about 3 times a week, so yes, for me, it'll be a lot less painful. However, at the rate it is going, the PA is not going to do anything. We will continue to live with this sh*tty PATH for all eternity, for all we know.

However, if it means a painful year of alternatives could bring a much better system, I'm willing to suffer. We survived 9/11 and Sandy without PATH (yes, I know, both are different scenarios, but the example is to show that as humans, we can adjust and adopt).

Being vested in Jersey City (home owner with kids, planning to stay long term), I really hope this time the sh*t boils over, and hits the fan BIG TIME.

Only a big disaster, or big embarrasement would spur any change. It's clear that past issues are all "chunk change" and no one at Port Authority would even bother to bat an eyelash.

So, despite the potential short term pain (eg without service), I really hope this time the sh*t will hit the fan big time, and hopefully change will happen.

We need to get on national news!!!

They called at 12:45 that they're "parked and walking to my apartment", and showed up at 12:55! I'm impressed!!!

Turns out my outside cable was ripped off from the poles by a truck this morning (my cable goes out thru a hole from my 3rd flr apartment, down the side of the building, and out to poles on the street). Funny thing is that, I think the same thing happened to my downstairs neighbor with their FIOS cable about 2-3 weeks ago.

I'm just glad that I'm "connected" again - I felt so lonely all morning long!!! Now I can go back to binge watching Twin Peaks!!!

So now I'm sitting here and twirlling my fingers, and waiting. What are the odds someone will show up by 1pm?

My bet is no one!!!
