Re: Jersey City will fire 375 school employees; 114 more will retire

This is sad but so typically American. I guess Christie doesn't care about the long term damage/issues as long as he doesn't raise taxes because if he raises taxes the world will end. Why not have an emergency tax. Surely if one can spend $200 for dinner, an extra $5 is not gonna kill me.

Why not raise gas, tobacco and alcohol taxes?

Location, location, location. Don't expect customers to go out of their way to get to you...It needs to be convenient and reasonably priced. Forget about people walking to Jersey Avenue. I like the Grove Street idea, but make sure you are on the right part of Grove - remember Bagua

I was asking a moral question. At some point, I think everyone knows right from wrong and perhaps teens need to be held to much tougher standards. They should learn that there are severe consequences and not just a slap on the wrist.

I hear you. Perhaps the City (LOL!) might approach some of the finer supermarkets and offer some type of incentives to lure them! I went to Trader Joe's tonite in Union Square and was merrily putting stuff in the basket until I looked and saw the line...and that was at 9pm.

Trader Joe's needs more stores!

Re: City To Conduct First Property Revaluation Since 1988
Home away from home

I think the city will be cautious in raising taxes for some simple reasons. If property taxes suddenly spiked then many homeowners would be unable to pay and there would be another spike in foreclosures, if demand tanked because taxes spiked then the city would have to rasie taxes on remaining property owners even more.... and then the Democrats would definitely get voted out of office. Of course, there would still be a contingent of renters who are immune. I don't think landlords can pass higher property taxes along to rent stabilized tenants or can they?

I'm not complaining about property taxes. I just think renters and landlords have different motivators. When so many people, the old-timers, live in rent stabilized or controlled apartments, then they simply don't care if property taxes or if public spending is out of control because they are protected!

FGJCNJ1970 you articulated my point. The financial burden s borne by the homeowners and not the renters so they don't directly feel the impact of their decisions...and not even mention those in rent-stabilized or rent-controlled units - these renters live in an alternate universe.

I found it odd that JC and Hoboken approved the increase in school budgets (which even I voted for) while so many other communities rejected them.

It seems that there are too many renters in JC who don't bear the costs of abatements and wasteful government spending....so they are apathetic. But if they had to pay taxes directly, then many of these renters would demand better government.

Jersey City Board of Education

I got the ballot for the election to select members of the Jersey City Board of Education. But where do I get information on the background/positions of the candidates.

I could be voting for the worst candidate and not know it. Where is the transparency?

I think the smart thing to do would be to raise taxes and SLOW spending until the economy recovers. As we know once the economy recovers, people will be asking for more tax cuts

Relax. It's just a plan. There are so many vested interests in the People's Republic of New Jersey that we won't recognize Christie's budget after the Dems and Repubs finish with it.

Perhaps the article was a bit much, but why put Jersey City down so much. If you don't like JC, why not leave. For many, JC is perfect - close enuff to Manhattan but not in Manhattan. Unless you are partying every night, perhaps one does not need to be in Chelsea.

GOVERNMENT IS NOT A BUSINESS! So true, please say it again. It's amazing that the simpletons are the first to claim that government should be run like a business and costs cut when times are bad, but when times are good - they're the first to say that government is not a business- employees shouldn't get fat raises or bonuses.

I hate to be mean but people who purchased homes that they can not afford should lose their houses. They made a bet and lost. Now why all the tears! I think both the banks (for alack underwriting) and the homeowner should lose.

consider going with a 15 gallon electric water heater if you are efficient in your water usage. also, on-demand water heater might help with space.

Bill Clinton raised taxes and everyone seemed to do just fine - so your argument that things will get bad just doesn't hold water.

Also, how do you propose we solve the deficit problem? I think the ones who can afford to pay more to provide safety nets and help reduce the deficit, etc. should pay more

what is wrong with a sales tax or income tax surcharge until the economy recovers. surely a $50 hike in income taxes would not hurt those who are working. or increase the millionaire's tax.

Thank you kindly. There was no debate to begin with. The wingnuts simply assumed that their position was correct and that the "liberals" ought to stop trying to prevent Christie from what he wants to do.

It's like those people who always try to portray the more eggregious examples of healthcare in Canada, the UK and elsewhere as the norm in those countries and then say we don't want that in the US. Of course, not. But the norm in those countries is far superior to the norm in the US. Further, the wingnuts always proclaim that America has the best healthcare in the world. But guess, unless you are Bill, Oprah or Obama or the Clintons, you're not getting that level of healthcare.
