And the law labels some degrees of speeding as reckless. He is not going to get far with that argument. Driving at Interstate speeds on an in town, winding street, with pedestrian crossings is pretty much the definition to reckless indifference.

I took my wife to Razza for our first date, and then again when I proposed almost a year later. It's laid back, has great food, and is a little different than a regular Italian restaurant, and much better than Porta.

But anyway, it seems a little weird to me that people would stop going to a restaurant, that they otherwise enjoyed, just because they could no longer bring their own booze. Is there something else I'm missing?

Lots of people are trailer trash, which also explains why they don't appreciate high quality food. Maybe an Olive Garden will satisfy them.

The food was uneven, the service was spotty, and the decision to go all tasting was just bizarre. As for bringing wine service in, they needed to provide better value than the fairly flat choices they had on their menu, but were precluded from doing so due to the high markup. For many wines they sold by the glass, their price was the full retail for a whole bottle. At that high a rate, they could only sell second rate wines.

Re: TALDE JERSEY CITY
Home away from home
Home away from home

Meh..

I come from a restaurant family, and know dozens of owners. A rigid, overly specialized and overdone elaborate concept never works out except for a few first class places that can draw from a wide area.

Thirty Acres was never a destination, so going all tasting menu was a death blow. Also, not catering to local tastes enough, and insisting on preparations that didn't move is a n issue.

The last time I did a tasting menu, it was for my wife's birthday. We went to Bouley, in NY, and it cost a heck of a lot more than what Thirty Acres charges. It was a true world class meal, which warranted the $650 bill, pre-tip. If I am going to go for a meal like that, I will not blow the experience on a restaurant with uneven cuisine and snotty staff. The servers, wine stewards, as well as the cheese and bread stewards were welcoming and were helpful, and offered suggestions to us, and even put a little candle in my wife's dessert for her birthday when they overheard us talking about it.

That is an experience I get in no restaurant here, although Satis comes close in providing a friendly, but nice atmosphere.

Back on topic, Talde lacks in these areas as well. They need to firm up their details, turn down the loud music, and finish the underside of that shitty concrete communal table.

Re: TALDE JERSEY CITY

I think it's a combination of things, but to me, the major one was not mentioned.

A tasting menu is something for a special occasion of people like me. I'll go to all of the more expensive restaurants in town, and enjoy them all for what they each are, but I reserve large meals like a tasting menu for a special occasions. The change in service took them out of my regular restaurant rotation.

I still go to my other regular spots, like Satis, Porto Leggero and the Kitchen at Grove, and now that I have moved to Union County now that I have married, to others like 100 Steps (great raw bar), or Pairings (excellent upscale BYOB).

My checks at all those places are comparable to what they were at 30 Acres before the service change.

I pay born in this town, pay taxes, own a car, and have a garage in Zone 2. I still have a sticker so I can park elsewhere in the zone.

What the heck is the matter with you?

A zone sticker costs $15 per year, and is free for seniors.

What a crock.

Good to know.

We'll live only a stone's throw from 100 Steps, and their oyster quality and BYOB policy make them our go to.

I am getting married next week and moving out to Linden, to my fiance's house, until we get a new place together. I have a Trader Joes, a Whole Foods and a Wegmans, all within ten minutes.

Re: A sign of the times for 'two cities' | Morgan

Depends on where you work. I can get to work down by Old Slip, in Lower Manhattan, from the Square faster than coworkers who live in Manhattan. Making it to the border of Manhattan is not the goal, but to commute to work.

There are also people who live high up in Washington Heights, or the Bronx, or any of a number of other areas in NY that may be served just as well by living in further in parts of JC.

It depends on the value proposition each person has. But with such a huge population trying to live closer to NYC, a little more gentrification may be enough to bring people from the corners of the outer Burroughs, or from some more urban NJ suburbs like Linden or South Orange.

Inexpensive rents and lower sale prices, for more square footage, will attract the next wave of gentrification over time.

You can get super cheap housing in Detroit. Excellent price per square foot!

-SNIP-

Neither of which are across the river from Manhattan, so the ridiculous comparisons don't matter, do they? Who the heck wanted to live in Astoria, or even Long Island City and commute to Manhattan a few years ago?

Th rest of Jersey City is becoming more desirable as the rents and sale prices downtown continue to escalate. A big part of Greenville and the West Side is a ten minute walk from any of the Light Rail stops in the area. And those areas have commercial and retail strips that can gentrify to attract the amenities that will be needed for that the snowball.

"Years ago", when there was something for everybody in all parts of Jersey City, was a way, way different time - a time when urban living was not generally sought after, at least outside of the Upper East Side types of uber wealthy neighborhoods.

Now, urban living is popular. Highly desirable. It's why Jersey City as a whole has seen a lift, mostly downtown. Access to NYC is the reason. Not just being in Jersey City, but having great access to Manhattan. That is the ticket.

If you look at other non-Downtown parts of Jersey City, some of which have boarded up storefronts, no commercial activity, and dilapidated houses, it's because people who revitalize neighborhoods generally do not want to live in neighborhoods that do not provide access to Manhattan.

Sadly, without the Path lines being extended to other neighborhoods, those neighborhoods will remain as they are. There will be no hyper growth, no huge developments.

Journal Square will explode. The Heights will remain stable with some growth. Everything else will remain as is or show marginal improvements.

In Jersey City, it will always be a tale of two cities, unless the Path is extended to other neighborhoods. Until then, the discrepancy between Downtown and other JC neighborhoods will only continue to grow, not shrink. It is an entirely different audience.

I disagree.

Look how far people commute from deep into Queens and Brooklyn, with multiple transfers. Any part of JC is a quicker commute than many of those areas. Downtown, then the Square, then the Heights will appreciate faster, in that order, but the rest of JC will do so in turn. Greenville has Light Rail and bus access to the PATH, and with CitiBike, it's not that bad either on nice days.

Right. It's a scam. Even changing the oil every 3,000 miles is overkill, but at least it's not too wasteful. I change mine every 5,000 miles, and my car is higher performance.

No, as the property owners adjacent to public sidewalks have a statutory duty to maintain them and clear them of snow.

They were going to trick you into either giving them the bill so they could use it as proof of address for identity theft, or to "slam" you, which is switching you to another utility without your consent. They get a commission, and you get higher bills.

Re: Bicycle advocacy groups call for crackdown on double parking in Jersey City, beyond

The vast majority of the double parking is by lazy jackasses stopping to pick up food at the local pizzerias and other eateries. They would not only double park on the westbound side of Newark, but also on the eastbound, which never had legal parking. Try threading your way through that shit show when two illegally parked cars are close to each other on different sides of the street and cars had to wind their way through the slalom.

I am glad they closed that block to traffic.

I like most of the places mentioned, with Skinners Loft scratching the itch for traditional items. I love the little assortment of biscuits and muffins they put on the table, and I prefer their Bloody Mary to most other places.

Yep, the Minion.. or the Snake for shorter cooks, like for chickens or a couple of turkey breasts. I may try a cold smoke too.. for salmon and bacon, which is with only five coals at a time.

I order the wood online. I get a mixed batch of chinks from here every few month.

Re: Coming Soon - Carvao BBQ in McGinly Square

Mine is a charcoal model.

I load in about 2/3 of a bag of Kingsford Competition, add in a few hunks of pecan, apple or cherry wood, and toos on about 20 lit briquettes. The IQ 120 (the yellow and red device) monitors the interior temperature and either blows in air, or shuts down the flow, to keep the temperature constant. If you pile up the colas properly, they burn very slowly, igniting a few at a time as the fire travels from one end of the pile to the other, so you get a long , even burn, with no need to watch for temperature spikes, or to add more fuel.

I did this batch hot and fast, at 300, wrapping the meat at 90 minutes (ribs) or at internal temperature of 150 (the brisket and shoulder), and continued to cook them until they were done.

The smoker was loaded at 9am, and everything was done, rested, sliced, pulled and served by 3PM. If I did it at 225, I would have had to start the night before.

The same way they get to doctors offices in other areas in which there is no parking, like on Pavonia, by the bus terminal. People routinely would park on the eastbound side to pick up food or drop people off, creating a traffic hazard. Good riddance to that.

Talk to the ladies that run the kitty adoptions at Fussy Friends on Saturdays. One of them is an old friend that took in a few feral kitties, both adult and young, and helped me adopt a 12 week old feral male, an adult rescue female, and a street rescue near adult female that was probably recently abandoned.

All three get along well, and while the male is still skittish among new people, all of them are very social now with people they meet a few times, with the girls being full on attention seeking.

But there is a publicly accessible deck that is just as close. The doctor is probably more miffed that people dropping off patients can no longer illegally stop to drop them off, blocking traffic and causing a dangerous condition as cars have to go into oncoming traffic to get around them, as well as all the other assholes pulled up on the eastbound side. .
