Actually the Dwight St. shooting was in Bergen-Lafayette, but the Warner Ave. (possibly related crime) was in Greenville. What is strange is how the police had no problem commenting on these shootings while they were under investigation unlike the shooting on Wayne St. a few days ago which has all been rather hush-hush while its been under investigation. Isn't that rather odd?

Please. Everyone knows that any neighborhood in JC that is not a lighter shade of pale, with luxury condos (with amenities) every 6 feet next to a Starbucks is a "sketchy and bad neighborhood filled with gangbangers lining the streets - who by the way only wear extra large white T-shirts....

They recently added NJ Transit #6 line which runs up Summit to Journal Square, but it looks like it goes down past the new County building first. There is a route map under the schedule.

Just out of curiosity Tommy - why did you decide to tour this part of town? You generally do not have anything positive to say about it.

Tommy here is a link which may answer some of your history related questions (check down a few paragraphs from the top). Don't know how much the brownstones sell for but there are some rather beautiful row houses through out the area. : )

My husband met his wife at the "Mayor's Cup" soccer tournament last year. He said they reeked of alcohol equally bad. I don't think he can embarrass her.

Ah ha! That changes the scenario - maybe it was a battle over the last brew!

I always thought the iron fence was put up to keep folks from playing football on that big stretch of lawn and stepping in a gopher hole while in the heat of play resulting in lawsuits against the JCMC for personal injuries.

Ah ha! That explains the 20-30% of voters in JC that actually bothered to vote. The non-dirt bags stayed home and sat on their hands.

Sorry. Everyone has a right to complain. It's enshrined in the First Amendment. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Bergen Hill, Lafayette, Greenville, The Heights... they have bigger problems and should be more vocal politically, demand more from the City, expect more from their community, and do more for themselves. But, that's quite a challenge. Unfortunately, they may speak, vote, expect, and do less as a result.
Alan, speaking only for myself and my family, we do vote. And considering only 20 or 30 % of all of Jersey City voters came out at the last very important city election, it seems many people have given up. But there is something that you may overlook: The "look who's doing the complaining" factor. I think a part of the problem is the city is just more responsive to certain sectors, that the attitude of "who pays more rent" also pervades the city's responses in some situations. It makes it easier to write off certain areas because everyone knows "they're all just - fill in the blank" and makes it easier overlook the decent folks of the area, after all "you know how they are". A true story for you: Many years ago there was a tenant interim lease program building on our block which developed "structural problems" The city gave the block association 2 options - either take a soup kitchen on the ground floor (there was - and is still - one 2 blocks away) and the "repairs" would be made or take a hole in the ground where the building used to stand. We protested against the soup kitchen, the tenants were removed, the building demolished and we ended up with the hole in the ground which was paved over with black top. It is difficult sometimes not to lose hope.

Look at those beautiful houses over on the West Side, which were the homes of hardworking families who took pride in their neighborhood. Now it's a cesspool, and the streets are not safe over there.

Hopefully, if one positive thing comes from this awful incident, it's that this will wake people up. There has to be a way to tackle the crime in the nasty parts of JC. More police? Cameras at hot intersections?

Tommy, there ARE cameras all around where this took place. Reed St. has been a problem area for decades, long before you decided to buy a brownstone downtown. Somehow, I don't think you know anyone who actually lives in this neighborhood and you assume much. All of my neighbors have ....what do you call them...oh yeah, JOBS!

The shooter and his companion were violent nut jobs, and the man at least seems to have commited violent crimes in SC as well as NJ. Its amazing that more people were not hurt by them. Our prayers are with the injured police officers and their families. Who would want to have people like this living next to them? You don't get to pick your neighbors.

You were suggesting they weren't close to either Beacon or SP College... when in reality they are about 4 blocks away. And I was suggesting that whether or not you can *see* the Beacon, or *see* St. Peter's College from the actual street, doesn't mean they aren't close by. So people who were flaming the earlier poster who was asking if the street was close to Beacon were a bit misguided in their attacks when the proof is right there on the map.

I believe greenville said "do you even live in this city" - to which i would reply, "can you even read a map?"

By using the "directions" feature of the mentioned map, walking to either destination is 8-9 minutes (approx. .5 miles) to either point from the crime scene. No attack was intended, only that it is not "right next door." (Its about the same distance from the Medical Center to City Hall.) That way, people can have a better idea of where the event occurred.

Its not like Sarah Palin seeing Russia from her house. You cannot see Beacon or St. Peters from that part of Reed St. at the corner of Bergen. You can probably see Beacon (off in the distance) from the end of Reed St. that ends on Monticello. One little block between Monticello and Bergen. Thats it. But lots of trouble.

Quite the opposite. I don't hate what he did at all, I rather admire it. It's the self-serving fashion in which he had to run home and post about it. Do what you need to do, then go on about your day. Even the title reeks of self-praise. "I Made the Streets of JC a Bit Safer." , instead of something like, "One less Drunk Driver on the streets."

Most of the homes are privately owned. Most of the boarded up property was what's left of the Med Ctr complex/Beacon. What really has been needed was a better police presence, not just a drive by down Monticello Ave. from one end to the other.

Maybe someone should send copies of the article to the members of the City Council who voted for the revised tax abatement. After they read the article, they should be forced to eat it before a crowd of angry constituents- no beverages allowed. I guess the developers of Crystal Point are betting our council members don't read the Times. Suckers!
