Re: Downtown Jersey City major streets very unsafe and bad access for pedestrians

I concur with everything Robocub wrote. I too am car-less and walk mostly everywhere. I try to cross at 9th and Marin every morning and most weekends I'm trying to get to Target, A&P or Home Depot. These large streets are dangerous.

Aren't we supposed to get a traffic light at 9th and Marin soon? Anyone know any updates? There are no signs of any construction being started...

From Councilman Fulop's Winter Update sent 1/26/2009:
"Traffic Lights: Several new traffic lights have been approved and are scheduled to be constructed in the next 3 months. These are 9th & Marin, Christopher Columbus & Warren, and Montgomery & Warren. The traffic light at Montgomery & Warren is near completion. "

Just received this at work:

Please be advised the rear area of Newport Mall, Mall Drive East, as well as the light rail stop at Pavonia/Newport, will be shut down for 18 to 24 hours (note this e-mail is being distributed on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 10:45 a.m.) due to fallen glass and potential hazardous risks in this area due to high winds.

For those who anticipate commuting on the light rail and wish to enter and/or exit from the Newport stop will be detoured to the Harsimus Cove stop.

Please distribute this message to all employees, co-workers and others who will benefit from this information.

Jersey City Police Department
East District Community Relations Officer

Yeah, I asked the cop that was guarding the blocked off side exit from the mall and he said the N/P light rail was closed due to glass falling from one of the buildings.

In Fulop's Winter update email, he stated this will be completed in May.

Quote:

Hoboken/Jersey City Walkway: Construction has started this summer on connecting the Hoboken and Jersey City waterfronts via a pedestrian walkway. This has been a much anticipated project, which will further expand Jersey City's accessibility and world class waterfront views. Per our primary contact at the NJ Transit, it appears that the work continues on this $8.9 million dollar project, which is on schedule to be completed in May.

I know this guy. He works hard, owns this home, owns his own business, and put his son through college.

Why do you think he doesn't pay taxes? Because he's an immigrant?

Not at all. It's great that he's found his American dream...but, it would seem to me that someone who paid taxes would know that part of those taxes go toward funding public services like the fire department, police department, etc. and wouldn't ask how much he owes the firefighters for putting out the fire.

Hmm, pretty sure it's not HIS tax dollars at work...more like my tax dollars at work.

I've used A-1 Taxi & Limo 201.432.3333 many times to get from Hamilton Park to Newark Airport (and back). They have always been on time -- even at 4:30am. They call me when the car is downstairs, so at least I don't have to wait outside. The fare is $25 and I usually ask how much when I make the call. The last time I took it was the end of October and gas prices are much cheaper now, so I can't imagine an increase from the $25. Happy Holidays.

When the skin care people ask "can i ask you a question?", I usually scowl and say the classic line "You just did". They don't know what to do after that.

I wouldn't bother with the Path either. I've considered it myself, but seemed too confusing with transfers etc. If you're traveling from midtown Manhattan, I would either to the Penn to EWR for $15 or take the Newark Liberty Airport Express bus run by Olympia Trails(Coach USA). Pick up at Port Authority (41st St) and it goes to EWR. The one way fare is $15 (round-trip is $25). Consider what time you are leaving though, because a bus might not be a good way during rush hour.

"...Did you have the $10/month Verizon plan that ended up costing $30 with fees? That's annoying!"
___________________

Yep, it was $9.85 and they just raised it to $11.??. It was annoying! Tivo made a call a day, and I had to pay for each call, so I kept the line unplugged for a few days at a time. (I'm cheap). MUCH happier without the landline.

If he got the unit in 2006, I'm sure it's a Series 2.

Funny you should ask, but I just had the pleasure of cancelling my land line service with Verizon last week -- which I had ONLY for Tivo. I didn't have cable at my old place. I had bare bones minimum land line service, but with all the taxes and other nonsense FCC line charges, it was over $30 a month.

In my new place, we have cable (with wireless) and only use cell phones for phonecalls. We just hooked up my Series 2 (with Lifetime subscription) using the Tivo wireless adapter and it works great -- purchased the Tivo wireless adapter at Amazon.com for $39.99. I suggest getting the Tivo adapter to avoid problems with incompatible adapters.

Before connecting wirelessly, it was hooked up to the cable modem, so you can definitely do it through cable.....as long as it's not a Series 1, as Scottacus said. There might be an issue with early model Series 2, as well, so do check. Mine was a late model Series 2 purchased in Nov 2004.

Hope it helps.

Come on, does it really take that much effort to dial 201-798-0500 then press 0 to report the abandoned cart? Reporting it right away makes the chances of that cart being recovered by BJs and off our streets much quicker. Personally, I programmed the number into my cell and I call it immediately when I see a cart. I reported one on Monday and two yesterday. It's a quick call and they seem to appreciate it.

As an aside, how do you know they're reading this thread?

Anyone know why the street is being dug up on 10th Street between Manila and Erie? The street was closed last night and still closed this afternoon.
