I wouldn't rent there. Vladmir is notoriously difficult to communicate with. I've lived on 8th Street for 20 years. I've never heard a nice word about him.

The rent might be good but the landlord is NOT worth it.

Had a surprisingly quick drive to Union City today (via Palisade Ave). Also noticed how little traffic there was on Bergenline. Then it dawned on me-- there were no dollars buses!!

It's been this way for a few days. Apparently the authorities have been cracking down on these vans and their safety violations.

I work on Burma Road (the other side of Phillips street south of the LSC). While I would LOVE to avoid the light rail station (sometimes I get stuck for 5 mins while both north and south bound trains enter/leave the station) I just don't see this as being a good idea.

There are two schools right on the intersection of Grand and Jersey. There are crossing guards but opening up Jersey Avenue as a "short cut" like that is going to cause fatalities.

I'd definitely tell your neighbor. I'm sure she'd want to know about all those people-- there could have been damage done to the property. And as a landlord, she's responsible for what goes on there.

I was telling my husband today that, given all the bickering and bad feelings, they should just put a glass bubble over the park. It would be an urban terrarium and no one would be allowed to use it.

I was really craving Indian food but I didn't want to order from Amiya (a little pricey for me) and I wasn't sure if the places on Newark would deliver downtown. I'm really happy I gave them a try!

I got

paneer kulcha-- still warm when I got it. Very tasty. The raita was a perfect dipping sauce.

veggie somosas-- crisp and flavorful.

navratan korma-- mild, sweet sauce with a hint of spice. For me, this dish is how I judge an Indian restaurant.

I'm very happy with this place. I'll order from them again when I decide to splurge on Indian food!

The corrected "Pet-Free Zone" signs are back. Are they in the right areas of the park? I saw them at the corner of 8th and West Hamilton.

I admit today was the first time I ever walked in there. Everything was 50% of and the shelves were pretty empty.

My husband is looking for a place where he can go to a sauna/steamroom. The thing is, he doesn't want to have to pay for a yearly gym membership.

Anyone know of a gym that let's you pay per visit? Or a hotel that has these facilities? I wouldn't mind spending the night in a nice hotel!

I'll go to the cops. I have NO PROBLEM with that. My only concern is that I'm not the one who's seen this. Like I said, my husband wants to film this guy. Once he does this I'll go to the cops.

Potential creep in Hamilton Park
#44

Bear with me, this is what my husband told me.

On Monday, my husband decided to study in Hamilton Park while the 8th Street library branch closed for lunch. At 2pm. my husband headed toward the library. An older gentleman approached him. The man kept winking and flicking his tongue at my husband. My husband said, "What the f*** do you want?!?" in Spanish. The guy ran away.

He didn't think much of it.

Today he saw the same guy following two teenage boys (most likely McNair students), The kids were horsing around and didn't notice the guy who was pretty close behind them.

My husband is very concerned. He's not sure if the guy is harmless or not. He plans on filming the guy the next time he sees him.

The guy is hispanic (possibly Puerto Rican), dark hair with some gray at the temples, moustache, and about 6' tall. He seems to know the time when the students at McNair are let out for lunch and the end of the day.

That all said, my husband doesn't want to go to the police. He's between resident statuses. We're married and I'm sponsoring him. ICE doesn't give any sort of ID when you are in the "in between." The ONLY id he has is our marriage certificate.

What should we do? Vigilante?

Hey Grove!

Please don't blame JCinsomniac. We're all looking for good food and perhaps Legal Beans was having an off night.

THAT SAID-- I will DEFINITELY try 2nd Street! I'm embarrassed to say that I've lived year for 20 years and I've never gone there.

I will keep searching for the portobello sandwich and I will keep you posted!

Finally got to walk through the park today. I think they did a great job on the renovation and was very pleased so many people were taking advantage of the new and improved park.

I was a bit dismayed at the litter by the basketball courts. My husband also noted how the same kids hogged the court while other kids waited but couldn't play.

I know there are people who clean up after the kids and that is wonderful. It's a shame that not all the kids are able to have their turn on the court because a few kids have made it 'theirs." This area of the park seems to be the most problematic since the park re-opened just a few days ago. Is there someway of monitoring the court so it is kept clean and everyone gets a turn to play?

How did you come to live in Jersey City?
#48
Home away from home

Were you born and raised? Are a transplant? Let's hear your story!

I graduated from Fordham U in 1989 and was living in the Bronx. I wanted to move so my "college years" would end and my "adult years" (heavy on the quotes!) would start. I looked at the LES but it was still a very dodgy area. I looked into Brooklyn and Queens. A friend from work happened to be sharing and apt in JSQ. I really liked the PATH train; it was clean and quick (compared to my 40 minute commute on the D train from Fordham Road). I liked Jersey City. Of course my "hip" friends all laughed at me!

I picked up a Village Voice and checked the apts for rent section. There was a one bedroom in JC listed with fireplace, dish washer and hardwood floors for $750. (Keep in mind that this was 1990 and I made the mistake of going to a Hoboken realtor and he laughed when I asked for a one bedroom for $750!). I wanted to see the place.

I found myself at the Pavonia/Newport PATH station. It was wierd-- mostly vacant lots, a few office and apt bldgs and a mall. As I walked to the apt I asked a couple of young women about living in the area.

"You want to live on 8th Street? That's a good street. You really don't want to live on other streets."

Long story short, I rented the apt and bought it in 1997. The area has really come along!

Webbie-- pls merge this if another thread about this exists. I couldn't find one when I searched.

Where can I find a great portobella panini sandwich?

Years ago I used to get the best portobella mushroom panini sandwich from La Primavera. It was made with foccachia bread, fresh mozzarella and roasted red peppers. It was pure heaven.

I really miss it. Can anyone recommend a good place to find such a sammich??

I'm not really sure, but my neighbor across the hall is asking $269k for her apt. Same square footage, slightly different layout. Like me, she hasn't done any major renovations.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad my property value went up and I'm all for paying my fare share. I'm just thinking about what Indomitus said:

Quote:
People who probably overpaid for their homes, will probably do better as the values have fallen for them. For people who bought modest homes years ago and have lived or planned to live a lifetime in them, those folks will be the hardest hit in this.

I really hope this is just a case of a kid who managed to get out of the house by mistake. It's so easy to pass judgment when you read about what section it occurred in.

Tonight I ordered the shrimp bisque and the vegetable panini. Granted, I live two blocks away on 8th Street. Food arrived within 25 minutes.

AWESOME!! All fresh ingredients.

I chatted with the delivery guy. They're actually in "soft opening" mode. They plan a GRAND OPENING next week.

They are a welcome business in the Hamilton Park area.

I was very disappointed with It's Greek To Me. I ordered from there a couple off times. SO OVERPRICED!! I stopped ordering after that. I felt their name even mocked me!

Be adventurous! Try The Heights! There are some wonderful Latin restaurants up there. Go to Union City!

You are only bored if you become complacent with your surroundings.

Re: SEC charges Goldman Sachs with fraud on CDO's tied to subprime mortgages

I work at a printer and Goldman Sachs is one of our clients. There is a special "team" of people who work on their material. They all have to pass stringent background checks and have to adhere to very strict rules for the GS work space (no cell phones, you're not allowed to have someone "piggy back" after swiping your security card when entering GS work space, etc.).

I understand the need for security, but I find it hilarious that my friends and co-workers ("the peons") are so scrutinized when the biggest crooks are the investment bankers themselves.

Hopefully, we won't lose the Goldman account they way we lost Bear Sterns and Lehman's accounts.

I came home from work at 11:30pm. I parked on 9th and West Hamilton. Right on the T-intersection of West Hamilton and Pavonia was a big ol' dog dookie.

I will BET my next mortgage payment that it will still be there at dawn on 4/7.

CARELESS dog owners are the reason to blame for the anti-dog sentiment. Sorry, but I want my part of the park to be DOG FREE and poop and pee free.

DOG OWNERS START POLICING EACH OTHER. Say something if you see someone not picking up after their dog.

It used to be great but then new owners took over. The quality definitely took a nose dive. Too bad-- I considered it one of the best pizza places in JC. Haven't ordered from there in at least 4 years.
