That is funny because the same thing happened to us! We ordered for our child and the two of us and my husband's sccop was much smaller than ours. I'm not sure if different people scooped them because I wasn't the one who ordered it.

They really need to be more consistent, I did see one woman "scoop" and she wasn't filling up the spoon at all. We'll try it again as the gelato was pretty tasty, but I hope they are hearing all of this.

Re: Can anyone shed some insight on the Newport Mall lockout of Hamilton Park?
Home away from home

The mall is ugly, but weren't you aware of it when you moved there in the first place? I can't imagine that they can do much about the walkway. You might try getting a group together to advocate a nicer and more well lit walkway in the garage, but I really can't see what they can do without spending a ton of money to renovate it.

I would guess that the mall has brought in a lot of revenue to JC, especially when JC was not a place where yuppies and young families wanted to move to. It was one of the factors that helped build up the Newport area to where it is now. Without Newport Mall, why would anyone have wanted to visit JC in the first place? And when all the buildings in Newport were built, that helped to improve the rest of Jersey City, including your neighborhood.

I actually like the mall. I know it gets a lot of slack here, but it's convenient for me. I like that the Light Rail stops right there and I can get in and out and back home in an hour. I just wish that there was an Old Navy there, instead of that yucky Pay Half. I would think if that Pay Half closed down, the clientele would improve.

This isn't an outdoor pool but I took my child to Stevens for lessons and the pool there is nice. You can join the pool for a monthly fee...I think it's something like $90 for a family membership? Pricey, but it is a very nice pool.

If there any shops worth going to elsewhere in JC I'll go to them. I've spent my money at places on 440. Where are all these shops in Greenville and the Heights that you keep mentioning. I've eaten at the Indian restaurants on Newark.

Give me a list of all the terrific places to shop and spend my money in Greenville.

So you've eaten on Newark Ave and you're still around to chat about it, congrats to ya. The Heights has plenty to offer.
Hudson Farmers Market
Stop & Shop
Rita's Ice
Podewitz Deli
Goherigs Italian Bakery
Andrea's Italian Deli
Christian Jewlers
Standard Tile
Rizzo's Bakery & Eatery
Renato's Restaurant
Gino's Pizza
Garden State News
Radio Shack...........And there's tons more to list plus most are family owned not some coorporate bimbos runnig the business from a computer in Tim Buk Tu

I'm sure the Heights has lots to offer, but other than Rita's none of the things on your list is enough to entice me to leave my neighborhood. Now, Charritos was awesome but they closed down so now we just stick to Hoboken. And, it takes me longer to get to the Heights than it does to drive to Hoboken which is another road block.

Greenville will be the next Hoboken in 10 yrs? Sorry but I doubt it. If Greenville didn't improve during the last economic upswing, do you really think it's going to improve now?

And does Greenville have a Target, BBB, Newport Mall, etc? No, it doesn't. So why the hell would anyone but locals shop there? When I lived in Brooklyn, did I lament that people from Manhattan didn't shop at our stores? No, because why would they travel all that way when they have better amenities in their neighborhood? You absolutely make no sense. Not sure why you have a chip on your shoulder, but it's a nonsensical one at best.

Just curious...!

The famalies / homeowners / renters in other areas of JC pay the most of tax burden.

What are you talking about? I live in downtown JC and I shop in JC. Why would I do any shopping in JSQ or Heights or Greenville? I should just go out of my way and inconvenience myself? Who would do that?

And I can tell you that I go to the Newport mall to go shopping. I grocery shop in JC, I go to Target, Home Depot, Buy Rite, and countless restaurants, all in JC. I can't even remember the last time I went out to eat or bought clothes in NYC. Yes, the majority of places I go to are in downtown, but that's where I live and why is that so bad?

Nuts.

Yes, animals can be dirty. But so can people/kids.

Let's see....kids are humans and dogs are animals. Kids, try as they might, can't lick their arsehole after they take a dump. They also generally don't pee and poop on the ground.

I really can't stand the kids vs. dogs debate. There should be NO debate because kids aren't dogs. If you are a dog person and you hate kids, that's great, but don't compare my child with your dog. If a dog bites someone, he'll get put down. If a kid bites someone, he'll get a time out or a spanking. Not really the same thing. Even if you think it is.

for example, blasting Mrasg1 for originally asking everyone's opinions on the junk food vendors:

but it's sort of hypocritical to be calling others "assholes", and swearing at Mrasg1 for posting his opinions, too.

are u the only one entitled to "waste" time with posting? now who's trying to stifle dialogue?

as for your political leanings, that's not the point -- good for u that you're "liberal" socially, and "conservative" fiscally -- that really isn't the point. it's your tone that's sometimes off-putting. just my opinion (i'm entitled to one too, aren't i?)

Ah, yes, but I wasn't the only one who had that opinion, was I? As a matter of fact, no one agreed with that guy and told him that he should mind his own business. Yes. Obviously they will. 4 of the top 10 wealthiest counties in the country are here. Proximity to New York City and Philadelphia, sophisticated culture and entertainment, and available land all make New Jersey a desirable place to live.

Quote:

And to add the already exorbitant property taxes that we have here, why would anyone want to live in NJ, especially the wealthy?

Where are they going to move to? Ohio? Mississippi? Arkansas?

They'll move to Connecticut, or Westchester. There is a higher rate of wealth in those states because the taxes in those states are much lower.

As for my "anger management issues", did you see anywhere where I was overwrought? I stated my opinion and what I felt about the tax break (which I did say, that I honestly have no problem with making the wealthy pay more taxes), and said what that I understood where Christie's train of thought. I certainly am not the only person who has stated an opinion, and did I throw out the "liberal" name calling that someone else threw out here? No I didn't.

Far be it from me to express an opinion that isn't like your left leaning one. This is why I find it extremely frustrating on this board. If you are the least bit conservative, names and flames get thrown at you. However if you lean to the left, it's perfectly ok to yell and scream and flame someone for not having the same opinion as you.

Say what you want about my political leanings, you have no absolutely no idea. I voted for Gore, I voted for Clinton, I even voted for Corzine the first go around. I am pro choice, pro gay marriage, I basically with all social issues vote liberally. However I have a real problem with people thinking it's OK to continue to over tax without taking a hard look at our budget and cutting waste as needed.

Look at JC. Look at all the waste we have here and yet they still think it's OK to increase property taxes to put more money in their pocket. JC is just a small part of a large issue in NJ. What is JC doing? Taxing the people who own in JC, the richest people in this city before taking a hardline with their budget. How do you not see that this is the same thing with this tax?

The original Corzine program, which expired this year, was based off of people making more than 400k per year. If the democrats were so concerned about it, why did the let it expire while Corzine was in office? They could have renewed it before Christie took control. The only reason why they allowed it to lapse was so they could make a political move against Christie, knowing he was going to let it expire.

I am all for raising taxes on the wealthy if there are no other solutions. Make some real budget cuts before you start adding more taxes. Do you think wealthy people will want to live here if they are taxed more here than they are in other states? And to add the already exorbitant property taxes that we have here, why would anyone want to live in NJ, especially the wealthy?

You are talking about a billionaire vs. someone who makes 400K a year, which is what this tax is about. OF COURSE SOMEONE WHO IS A MILLIONAIRE PAYS LESS TAX RATE THAN PEOPLE LIKE US! THEY HAVE MORE DEDUCTIONS! But in the end, they STILL are paying more because guess what, they are a billionaire and if they pay 17% of their income, it's fair more than 30% of ours.

Do you really think that someone who makes 50K a year pays more income tax than someone who makes 400k? Really? Because I highly doubt that.

Do you really think that millionaires don't pay taxes? They actually pay more taxes than teachers, fire fighters, police officers.

Such a stupid, narrow view of you people who think that just because you make a ton of money, you "screwed" someone over. WTF is that? Not everyone who makes a lot of money are bankers. I know plenty of people who make a lot of money who work in retail, technology, sales. Just stupid that you make such broadsweeping statements.

Also, I never said anything about teachers being bad or dumb. If anything, I think that we SHOULD pay teachers more and offset that with pension reform and teachers paying into their own health benefits, not this 1.5% nonsense.

The pension system is unsustainable. There needs to be reform. My taxes do not fund millionaires, it funds teachers, police, etc. While I think that we probably could tack on more tax on the "millionaires" it still won't solve the pension problem. That means that the people on my tax payroll will have to make some concessions.

I find it ironic that my tax money goes to people's payroll and pension and they get much much better benefits than I do and a lot of them make more money than me. It's pretty sad, actually that instead of sucking it up and paying 1.5% of their income to health insurance, they whine and complain and tell the students of their schools that Gov Christie is doing a horrible thing to them, "the children".

Christie isn't cutting taxes for "millionaires". He's choosing not to add an extra tax that Corzine enacted that was set to expire this year.

The bottom line is, no one in the state is willing to make any sacrifices and expect people just to pay more taxes instead of balancing their budget. Their solution is just to tax and tax until NJ is so unaffordable, people won't be able to live here. Sorry, but 15K property taxes on a 500K house in Essex county is OUT OF CONTROL. Other states are able to get by on far less. It's to the point that young familes can't even buy a house here, unless they make a ton of money.

Asking teachers to pay 1.5% of their salary towards health benefits isn't a huge sacrifice. That's actually NOTHING compared to what other people pay. It's pretaxed and won't even make a dent in their take home pay. Other state employees pay for their health insurance, so how is that fair? And the pension situation is out of control. The state will be BANKRUPT.

God forbid we ask teachers to make any sacrifices. I'm sick of the "what about the children" handwringing. Honestly, if some teachers lose their jobs because they are unwilling to take a pay freeze and pay for their benefits, I really don't care. Children will learn, even if it means that class size increases.

Christie's point is, the residents of NJ are taxed enough as it is and adding another tax on top of what people are already paying isn't fair just because you make a certain amount of money. He wants towns to balance their budgets and stop relying on state money to bail them out because there isn't any more money to give.

We all knew that Christie was going to do this, it's certainly not a surprise to me. I get his point, he has been pretty consistent with his message.

Let me guess, you are all for the "soda tax" because it's all about the children and that will solve obesity. Solving obesity won't happen unless we teach our children to make good decisions. Hiding hotdog stands won't teach kids a thing. When I went to HS, there was an ice cream truck parked outside the school every day and guess what? I didn't have an ice cream every day, and neither did my friends.

You are worried about a bunch of private school high schooll kids who probably have parents who are involved and are well aware of the hot dog guy who parks outside of the school. If you are truly concerned about the well being of these children who aren't even YOURS, write a letter to them, complain to the headmaster like I mentioned about. Then come back here with your results.
