My condolences to her family and friends. I agree, she sounded like a wonderful woman.
What a horrible way to leave this planet, too. Something definitely needs to be done. Didn't another elderly woman get hit crossing Montgomery by Marin over the summer?

Re: What's this letter from Warren G. Curtin about?

My apologies. Steve was in fact correct. According to the letter, 3 association presidents (VVP, HC and PH) killed the proposed changes, and VVP Pres. Bill Donohue "claimed that a vote by Van Vorst Park Association rejected the attached changes."
I just re-read the letter and noted that Warren is urging the recipients to pass it on to friends and neighbors, so I am posting his letter here, hopefully without any objection from him. The proposed edits were also attached to the email I received, however, this is a 21-page .pdf file and I don't think it would be appropriate to post that here. If anyone else wishes to see the proposal, I recommend that you contact Warren directly at wacurtin@aol.com. On a side note, I, too, agree with Warren's proposed edits to the Ordinance. Could someone from the VVP association confirm that there was in fact a vote on this proposal? I live in VVP and do not remember seeing any meeting announcements with this particular item on the agenda. Quote:

Picked up 6 pork tacos last night for a quick dinner. I think they may even have increased the portions of the taco filling. With 3 tacos each, the hubby and I were very satisfied.

I received this letter as well. It's about the ongoing dispute between downtown homeowners and the historic preservation.
The letter didn't really provide details on that vote that took place, and the reason(s) why, of all the neighborhood associations, only VVP voted against the proposed amendments to the ordinance. If anyone is interested in seeing the letter, PM me.

You're welcome. We love you guys (couldn't you tell?), and we're very happy that your first month was a success. We hope you the best, and again welcome to the hood!

We picked up some food at Taqueria tonight before heading over to Victory Hall to see the Heist. Tried the cactus taco - I have to admit that I wasn't very fond of it. Everything else, however, was great.
I was also glad to see that the place was nearly at capacity. 8 tables out of 10 or 11 were occupied while we waited for our food. I really hope they do well. I was sad to see Hamilton Cafe go, but Taqueria is a great addition to the 'hood. Quote:

According to my Mexican friends, Taqueria (and the old Taco Truck) does indeed serve authentic Mexican food! One of them told me just this morning that they brought some of their (Mexican) friends there over the weekend, and they all raved about the food.
[ Glenn, no philosophical debates on "authentic," please! ] Heck, even if Taqueria's food weren't authentic, I'd still keep patronizing that place. Their food is great, the prices are very low, and the owners are just so darn nice. I, too, hope they do well. Summagold: why don't you give the place a try? You say you've never been there, so you can't really pass judgment.

Minnie for President! At least with her on the reigns, we'll know that there will be true transparency.
Why haven't the HPNA officers posted on this thread yet? I'd like to hear their side of the story.

Oy vey. I don't know what's funnier: the lawsuit's implication that a small, non-profit museum trying to "extort" a multi-billion developer, or that the museum has received a whopping $250 from Lefrak to date, despite the developer's promise to donate $1M - with some conditions, of course. LOL.

We are required to purchase a flood ins policy by our mortgage lender, and I presume all downtown JC homeowners are, too. Do we need it? Apparently so, because we are in a flood zone. But what does it actually cover? I've no clue.

Former Hospital Could Become 1,200 Condos
'Beacon' development will preserve Med Center architecture, may include museum Excerpts: Ultimately, according to the redevelopers of the site, Metrovest Equities, the entire project could include a $350 million renovation of the hospital buildings, including 1,200 rental and condo apartments, shops, a central courtyard, a dog run, a restaurant, a grocery store, and the parking garage. The buildings to be redeveloped in phase one will be the center building at the Baldwin Avenue main entrance to the hospital, and two buildings adjoining the center building. The main entrance for the new project will be on Montgomery Street. The developer Filopoulos also spoke during the presentation, answering questions from the Planning Board. He said the Beacon will have features accessible to local residents. He said there will be a museum dedicated to the history of the Medical Center, as well as a supermarket and an early child care center. Filopoulos also said that the size of the residential units being built in the first phase will average 900 square feet because of the way the original medical buildings were designed and constructed. Future units being built in the other phases will average 2,000 square feet. Also: http://www.njcu.edu/programs/jchistor ... ue_Maternity_Hospital.htm As part of the Jersey City Medical Center Complex at Montgomery and Baldwin Avenues, the Maternity Hospital will undergo renovation. Rather than demolishing these locally significant and historic structures, the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency named Metrovest Equities of Manhattan to rehabilitate the buildings. The complex will be called the Beacon and redesigned for rental and condominium apartments as well as commercial space and cultural venues. The renovation project is to be completed by 2010 for a projected cost of $350 million. Lastly, from the JCEDC site http://www.jcedc.org/new/jj040405.html The initial stage of the three-phase project, called the Beacon, would target three buildings, turning them into 314 condominium units, a rooftop restaurant, a public pre-K /daycare center, and 64,821 square feet of office/retail space. The initial round of construction also would include all roadway, landscaping and utility work, as well as the construction of a new 1,049-space parking garage. When completed, the complex will feature 1,200 condominium units, a public theater, a gourmet market, parks, shops, a dog run, a library and business center, screening rooms, a spa and a museum devoted to the Jersey City Medical Center.

Move over, Basic, there's a new coffee shop in town! Legal Grounds has definitely topped my list, after having sampled their espresso and latte this evening. These folks truly know how to brew a perfect cup, and they use the best beans and equipment money can buy. I've learned that they also roast their own beans and were trained by the best barista in the country. Their espresso was reminiscent of the best cafe (aka espresso) my husband and I had during our recent trip to Italy. The place is very warm and cozy, with more chairs, tables and free WiFi evidently on their way. The owners and staff are equally warm and friendly, making our first visit very enjoyable. Basic will always hold a special place in my heart, but this new spot is Legally my new number one. This is exactly the type of coffee shop we've been wishing for in our area. Welcome to the 'hood and I wish Xtian and his lovely wife the best of luck.

I can personally attest to the fact that Warren is an upstanding citizen. As I mentioned in another post, he was our previous landlard [at that Varick street property mentioned in that article] who eventually became our real estate agent when we purchased our first home. I'm glad to see that he is getting somewhere with his petition. Oh, and is that jclist that they alluded to at the end of the article? Hmmmm...

anyway, as for the original post, i agree with half of your statements but the other half really are not founded on any facts. i do not subscribe to a "go back from whence you came" mentality, but since you've already stated that you are "getting the heck out of Newport," then let me be the first (or second, or third ... ) to say, Bon Voyage!
