Re: Saving the Powerhouse Arts District remaining buildings

Can we just drop the "Powerhouse Arts District" charade and call it South Newport already? I liked the old plan for the Powerhouse Arts District, but it's obvious it'll never be what the community wanted, only what Roseland and Kushner want.

Went by tonight for dinner. Our service was not very good, but that's forgivable since they just opened.

We had a pizza and a pasta. The food was not really to my taste. It's comparable in price to Razza, but not even on the same planet. The sauce was good but the crust was kind of spongey. The pasta was okay, but pretty small for the price. i much prefer Roman Nose's.

The space is really pretty, and I could see going back for the bar only.

5/10

I also went there for dinner last night, and I also found the pizza crust to be spongey.

I went to the Asbury location once before and it was good. I was quite disappointed with dinner at the JC location last night. Hopefully they're just having some start-up issues and things will improve once they find their legs. Will give them another chance in a few weeks or so. The space looks nice, and I look forward to checking out the roof deck come spring.

Signal.
Problems.
Every.
Damn.
Day.

Sardine can crowding every damn weekend. At least the problems affected Hoboken tonight so the trains were skipping the Hoboken Detour. That was a nice treat.

If PA's approach to installing PTC on the 33rd Street lines is anything like its approach to the WTC line, it will probably be time to leave JC. I just can't hang with this mess.

That would be great! I bike to Coney Island sometimes via Brooklyn Bridge, crowded BK streets, and PATH. An alternate route via VNB and Bayonne Br would be great!

I still think one of the important changes that has to happen to alleviate rush hour crowding is to extend the rush hour: Continue "frequent" service between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., and between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. That's an easy fix that doesn't require more infrastructure.

Just requires negotiation with the railroad labor union. I'd bet there's a minimum and maximum number of hours you can have a crew on duty, and that the current rush service results from an overlap of the pre-rush crews and the post-rush crews. If you extend the rush you'll have to have one or both crews stay on duty longer, and probably longer than the negotiated labor rules currently allow. So maybe you could negotiate for longer shifts. Or maybe you could bring on extra crews (but you'd have to keep them on duty for a minimum of ___ hours, so you'd be running rush hour frequency for many more hours). Sounds great for riders but it would increase PATH's operating cost a ton. In this case, they probably think it better to cram riders on for an uncomfortable hour during the "fringe rush" times than increase operating cost by ___%.

I don't work for PATH nor do I know much about the mechanics of their operation, but this is a hypothesis (or a free excuse for PATH to start selling). Oh, the things you think about while waiting on a platform, or while your face is buried in someone's armpit on the 08:33 train out of Pavonia-Newport.

Ugh. I could do without food trucks on Nwk Ave. I appreciate the extra capacity for walking.

Not sure the exact dimensions but assuming we had 15 feet of sidewalk on each side of Newark Ave. Then with the advent of Restaurant Row, half of that became al fresco seating for restaurants. Then the city threw down those fat concrete planters and half-dead shrubs, and benches, and garbage cans, and bike racks. The sidewalk on Newark was only 3-4 feet wide in a few spots. Real "pinch points" if you think about the capacity of the sidewalk to move people.

Now at night, the restaurants take ALL of the sidewalk, leaving the ~20 feet or so of street for walking. And that's fine. Can we enjoy the extra pedestrian capacity instead of looking for ways to fill the space with more crap that's in the way? If you put 102" trucks on the street and 6-7 feet of foodies standing on line, we'll have 3 feet for walking again.

Maybe I should've been an engineer. Bottlenecks, even on sidewalks, really annoy me.

Re: Connect PATH to 6 train, or $4 billion MALL?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Another issue is the length of the cars. I think the IRT cars are about the same length as PATH cars, but IND/BMT cars are about 10 feet longer. So extending the E, you might not be able to use E cars on the PATH tracks, assuming the longer cars can't handle PATH curves/geometry (I'm not an engineer, but the cars are shorter for a reason, I'm sure).

Also, the platforms at all stations would have to be extended quite a bit. An 11-car 6 train wouldn't fit on the platforms at Exchange Place or Grove Street (probably not JSQ or Harrison either). I think PA plans to extend the platforms at Grove to accommodate 10-car trains, what's an extra 50 feet?

These aren't fatal flaws, but considerations that come with some price tags I'm sure.

Re: Jersey City considers turning Newark Avenue into pedestrian plaza

Just to be clear, it says on Saturdays and Sundays the closure will last from 12 a.m. to midnight. 12 a.m. is midnight. Will the closure be in effect 24 hours on Saturdays and Sundays (closes Friday afternoon, reopens Monday) or did they really mean 12 p.m. (noon) to midnight on Saturdays and Sundays?

Beginning Tuesday, August 19, 2014, Newark Avenue from Grove Street to Barrow Street
and Erie Street from Newark Avenue to Bay Street will be closed from 3 p.m. to midnight, Monday through Friday and between 12 a.m. and midnight, Saturday and Sunday for the preservation of the public?s safety and welfare at the newly created pedestrian plaza.

?We are excited for the creation of the new pedestrian plaza at Newark Avenue as this will provide our residents more opportunities to enjoy the great restaurants and cafes in the area and take in music and culture, while contributing to a sense of community,? said Mayor Fulop. ?The City has worked with the businesses in the area on the street closures and we will continue to monitor the pilot program to measure the impacts and benefits, but we view this is a largely positive addition to the area.?

I tried it once the week it opened and vowed never again. Whoever (A) designated that stretch of filth and treachery a "bike route" and (B) is responsible for maintaining it (I'm guessing the State since 1/9 is a state highway) should be embarrassed. But I'm sure they're not.

This should be good. The sidewalks on Newark Ave have been so littered with "street furniture" in recent years that there are some real bottlenecks. I wonder if there will be a strollers-only lane.

Bergen Hill is a better than downtown Jersey City, because you get more from your money, and homes are much affordable and bigger and better. In places in bergen hill like Park St, Prescott St, Summit and Astor Place they have big, beautiful historic brick townhouses. It's as safe as downtown Jersey City. No flood areas, minutes to New York City. Unlike downtown Jersey City it is easy to find parking. It is a great place to live and grow up here.

Just curious what you've found to be the best/fastest/most reliable way to get into the city from Bergen Hill. I love the housing stock there, but I've always assumed getting to the city would be a chore.

Re: 5th & Coles

I live at 4th close to Coles. We had more water in the basement during Sandy (2-3 feet) than during Irene (less than a foot).

The thing with Sandy is the water was salt water coming up through the sewer and the ground, but the street was dry. During Irene, however, it was rainwater runoff. I remember Monmouth Street took a beating during Irene, with the street and anything at or below street level underwater.

I wasn't here in 2007, but my neighbors who were told me there was a bad flood then too.

Once I was delayed a long time on Wayne Street as they just came to a complete stop right in the middle. Does anyone know where they go for the winter? Like clockwork they are back! I don't believe that there is much help for these poor souls - mental illness and drug addiction took over long ago.

You mean Paco and Taco? They didn't disappear for the winter. I see them all the time. They've been hanging out under the new awning at the corner of Barrow and Newark more often than by Box lately.

We don't. The Weather Channel started it as a publicity stunt to get more clicks on their site. Nobody else (National Weather Service, NOAA, etc.) uses these stupid names.

The Jersey Journal does, too.

Ok, no reputable source of weather data or news uses the stupid names. :)
