I believe they said in the conference that the cops observed the suspect with a shotgun under his clothing that's why they went after him and the other bird brain.

The map does not tell the story buddy and apparently your such a weenie that you never walked around their to see the real distance. It's about the 3/4 distance from the Montgomery projects to dixon mills. Close I don't think so.

I have to agree with mwa, that nobody really considers the other side of the Turnpike to be Downtown. It may be the "official" designation, but in look and feel (plus the fact that it's separated by a friggin' highway), in my opinion, it's really not Downtown. Also the Holland Gardens is "technically" downtown, on 16th Street, but who the hell really considers that to be Downtown? I'd bet that 50-75% of "Downtown Crime" occurs in or near these 2 projects that are "technically" downtown...but nobody really considers them to be Downtown.

Funny how downtowners consider themselves to be the 6th borough but do not consider the projects as theirs!

Downtown JC will never become the "mecca" for yuppies that people wanted it to be thanks in part to the fine work of the people who live and work in DTJC. Good job guys!

You conveniently ignore the fact that almost every developed nation has what you would consider draconian gun laws, with the consequence being gun murders are a rarity there and a national sport here. Our liberal gun laws make us a freak show. How can you possibly believe MORE guns will improve these numbers?!! Colombia's is at 50 deaths per 100k. Do you think they're problem is they don't have enough guns?

Colombia has had a civil war & a drug war for several decades BTW. I support smart gun control IN OTHER STATES WHICH ARE TO BLAME FOR MOST ILLEGAL GUNS, but until those other states start regulating gun sales this state should not let it's people be defenseless against all the thugs who are almost always packing heat. But if guns were to be outright banned in the US crime would not go down. Instead it would probably go up as thugs would still get guns through the black market, and they would have a field day as people would be defenseless against them.

SLyng, since you're good wid da numbers, have a crack at this nut. Newark has about 50% more cops than we do with a similar population, the cops say it's because the airport provides a shot of additional tax revenue. I find it hard to believe the airport is a better cash cow than our Downtown Waterfront. Have we really given away that much? I thought the PILOTS actually brought the city more cash in the short run.

You forgot that Newark has several different businesses that bring in tax revenue. Airport, oil refineries, ports, and a federal courthouse. It has a lot of things that could make it a great place but the problem is it's a large part of it's people just don't give damn about that city or society. Much of the violence that happens around here, ESPECIALLY DTJC is perpetrated by people from Newark.

The bubble has not popped in the downtown yet, and until people start thinking of buying real estate as a way to improve your life instead of a quick way to make money we will still have this problem.

I'm new here, long time lurker. I live right around the corner.

I see a lot of people saying we need more cops, and I agree. However, the city can do it at minimal cost, if they enact an auxiliary police program.

I just moved here, and back home most cities had it. The deal was they send you to the academy part time at night (for a few months) and give you the same training and you work 12 hours or so a month for free to the city (with benefits if you get injured, etc.).

This would upset some of the high pay senior cops get (84k) around here, but would provide a benefit. Where I lived, gangs had moved into the suburbs and were shooting and burning houses. The adults in the neighborhood went through (9 of us) and patrolled on our nights off. In 2 months the problems stopped.

Let citizen's take care of thier neighborhood.

I'll start the flame war I see too often on here: Criminals have guns, why not let those who went through the background check and invasive gun buying process here to go to training (same armed guards get) and carry weapons for the protection of themselves?

Why let the "bosses" of this S/City take it back?!!! Good service, and free!

A while ago I started to look to see how I could join an auxiliary police unit around here, found out that JC didn't have one. It would be great if it did though as places like NYC, lots of towns in Bergen county, and even in Essex county have auxiliary units. But the problem is that the JCPD is understaffed and it would be a big burden for the JCPD to respond to calls from auxiliary units because they are already flooded with calls by people. Also auxiliary cops are not free as the city would have to pay for liability insurance and pay for equipment yadi yadi yada.

Just wondering if there is a connection? Same M.O. and they only caught one of the guys as far as I know.

This is probably not related because that bodega was an illegal betting shop, but your on to something. I believe this might be connected with the deli or restaurant in downtown that was robbed a couple of weeks ago, can someone remember?

I bet you Healy is going to come out saying that we need more gun control and is going to make it harder for people like this victim to defend themselves. He will not mention the fact that the judicial system in the state is ridiculous and that money that should be going in to hire more cops is being diverted into the politicians such as himself. We need to end giving criminals such light sentences and bring back the death penalty (they said it doesn't work, but how can it work when you don't use it?), and put more cops on the streets.

Bad dog owners to blame again. Problem dogs always have a history of attacks before their owners finally wise up to the problem or the gov intervenes. Remember that dog that attacked the illegal immigrant who was working outside the home? The owners said that the dog was gentle and only attacked because it felt it's owner threaten, and made a big show to not have the dog put to sleep only to backtrack when the same dog and the other dogs in the home attacked grandma! lunawolf3, thanks to you people like this lady are giving more options to keep their dogs. You supported the move to save Congo by former assemblyman now child sex predator Neil Cohen to make it harder for the gov to get rid of clearly problematic dogs.

Update:

Teen arrested in shooting of woman at Jersey City boarding house
by Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
Monday January 19, 2009, 6:05 PM

A 17-year-old Jersey City boy with suspected ties to the Bloods street gang has been charged with the cold-blooded attack on a city woman who was shot in the head in a boarding house off Journal Square Thursday, police said.

The boy, a resident of Bergen Avenue near Dwight Street, was arrested at the Jersey City Medical Center on Friday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, and additional weapons offenses, police said today.

Police responding to the boarding house at Academy Street and Baldwin Avenue on Thursday night found the 23-year-old victim writhing and screaming for help with a bullet wound to her temple and no exit wound, reports said.

A friend told police she arrived moments earlier and while running up the stairs, a man wearing a ski mask ran past her in the opposite direction, reports said.

After the shooting the victim was rushed to the Medical Center where she began having seizures and was placed in an induced coma, reports said.

Police developed information that the shooter was asking about the victim's condition and that he might try to see her at the hospital, so investigators staked out the hospital, officials said.

Around 4 p.m. Friday the boy's cousin, Kyliah Grand, 18, of Arlington Avenue, turned up at the hospital and a short time later the boy showed arrived as well, police said. Police arrested both, charging Grant with conspiracy to tamper with a witness, police said.

Based on information released by police, the possible motive of the shooting was not clear, nor was it clear why the boy and his cousin went to the hospital.

No update on the victim's condition was available.
