you're right. oranges are way better than apples

Hoboken St. Patrick's Day - Sat March 7th
Home away from home
Home away from home

anyone going to this lovely yearly tradition this saturday? while waiting on a 1 hr line to get into an overcrowded bar is obviously not fun, house parties definitely are. most of my friends either still live in hoboken or still go to school at stevens, so we'll be having a house party there. weather looks to be good too (should be around 50 and no rain). anyone else making the trip down there?

i see tons of the laguna postcards at my barber shop on palisade and franklin. it's weird because the postcards say they allow timbs and jeans, but if they really wanted to be at least semi-selective they should have stated no timbs.

plastic cups or not, i want to head out there one night. still trying to decide if it's better on a friday or saturday. as long as theres decent music and it's not completely empty, i wouldnt mind.

suzanne i went back again about 2 months ago.. friday night, around 1030ish. i had just stopped by for a quick beer with my friend (both 23 - we were on our way to the city but we needed a few drinks first).

the place was again not too full, and again a mixed crowd. mostly guys in their 40s from what i could tell. average prices for beer, but not too many young people that i could see. however, the bartender was nice, and there were no dirty looks given or trouble started by any of the clientele. i think i might try it again on a proper night and time (after 11pm on a weekend night). the place has potential since it's clean, but most importantly ever so close to home

Big LOL. Those theaters are in even worse physical shape than Newport. That's why they're building a new stadium seating theater in the parking lot across from the loew's six.

There are FAR better places to see a movie on the big screen than either Secaucus or Newport.

im sorry im not much of a movie theater snob... i just like to go to a place where people aren't running around / talking / starting fights. and since secaucus happens to be geographically closer to where my friends and i live, then secaucus it is. if i wanted to take it to the next level i suppose i could make the trek up to edgewater, but it's not really that serious

The JC library system is actually quite good. The people who work there are great and it is free!

Combine all of the above by canceling your cable TV. I know it sounds blasphemous, but I'll give you several reasons why this is a good idea:

1. Comcast is awful
2. You can spend more time reading books from the JC library for free
3. You can spend more time cooking, thereby saving even more money
4. You would be amazed at how your desire to buy anything goes down when you are not subjecting yourself to a barrage of TV commercials. In other words, you won't want to buy as much crap.

I would cut out new shoes and maybe even food before I cut out TV.

I admire you. For real.

you can watch almost any show on hulu the day after it airs for free. for older re-runs, there's surfthechannel.com. movies - netflix or the $1 dvds at shoprite/a and p. sports? this ones tougher, but there are sites that stream sports for free (usually in chinese or another language). or watch big games at a bar or a friend's house. news - online.

i wouldnt be the first to drop cable tv but nowadays it's tons easier to drop it. if i had to choose one (internet or tv) to drop, id drop tv in a second

Despite not being in JC, Sushi Lounge in Hoboken has $20 pre-fixe menu on Mondays. This includes appetizers, TWO full sized sushi rolls and dessert. Also, if you are there between 4-7 the martinis are 1/2 priced.
Additionally, the Hoboken Shop Rite is sooooo much more pleasant then the one in JC. Their produce is better. Line at the deli and the checkout shorter. When you say "excuse me", a fellow shopper will actually move their cart over! I highly recommend getting your soup ingredients there to save up some dough.

minado in morris plains or little ferry. $18 all you can eat sushi buffet for lunch. kinda hard if you dont work near there during the week, but easy enough to get to on a sat or sunday.

Re: Stegman Street
Home away from home
Home away from home

jerseynew - you have to understand some neighborhoods are more desirable than others, and within each neighborhood there are areas that are better than others.

the big 'areas' of jersey city are:

downtown - most expensive but generally the safest
heights - more affordable, also some pockets of crime areas
journal square - some new and existing condos, generally a good area.
greenville - has many legitimately 'bad' areas, but also some nicer ones
bergen lafayette - some parts nicer than greenville but not great

the problem is you need to look at the subdivisions within the neighborhoods even more. for example, the heights is large in terms of area. some parts of the heights closer to palisade ave are not as nice as sparrow hill (which is closer to journal square). this is just one example; there are countless others.

i think you might have posted this already on another thread, but what is the main thing you are looking for in moving to jc? do you need easy transport to NYC for work? do you need to be near a highway? or just a safe/nice place to live? based on this we could probably recommend a few areas for you to look into

shes been to a couple of different places but the last one she went to there was all the way down almost by the intersection of tonnelle and newark ave, on the side opposite white castle. it was like $3 or $4, and they did a decent job. the hoboken one is overpriced, and the last time in the city she went to one on the lower east side that was also overpriced (relatively speaking).

theres dozens in newark ave by jsq (the gf goes there from time to time), but depending on where you are downtown i guess that could be just as much of a hassle as getting into the city. they have a place in newport on the 2nd floor that does it too (by maggie moo's / GNC), so that could be your best bet

the funny part is holland motor lodge used to be the #1 rated hotel in jc on tripadvisor.com . not sure if it's actually that good for the money, or if the owners are hijacking a few tripadvisor reviews. i usually just recommend people stay at one of the ones closer to newport instead

probably significant, although not as high as you might expect at some of the city's private schools. the sad fact is many intelligent, respectful and otherwise law abiding students DO attend the city's public high schools - but all you hear about is the thugs and gang bangers.

Re: Gaughan's Legacy!

i'm all for voting a person out of office / getting someone new in there, if the reasons are worthy. for example, if gaughan let the heights deteriorate over 16 years (it hasn't), or if crime were out of control (it's not), or if he has proven inept or has not displayed servitude to others, then i'd consider voting him out.

but so far, the only reasons posted on the thread are that he has family members on the city payroll, and several trolls posting things about the heights which are obviously not true.

good thing jclist represents the vast majority of people in jc. at this rate, gaughan will lose in a landslide

most of the positions on the boards are appointed by the mayor. any councilperson can also nominate you, and the mayor will ultimately decide on who sits or not. based on what ive heard, almost anyone who is nominated by a councilperson gets appointed.

you say she is not qualified - what qualifications exactly is she lacking? is she not college educated? (although one could argue that even that may not necessarily be a requirement). does she lack an MBA? or is it just automatically suspicious since she's the daughter of a councilperson?

i agree it's logically dumb to hold the bartender responsible, but i do believe there are some laws in place that hold bartenders accountable. that's why they're supposed to cut you off and take away your keys. i wouldnt be surprised to see a lawsuit against the bar come about (and definitely one against the cop)

seriously.. whenever there are witnesses to a serious crime, the JJ has no problem listing their name and even what part of town theyre from (potentially and unnecessarily putting the witnesses at risk for retaliation).. but then they leave out any relevant info about the perps

using the transitive property of life... if gaughan is to blame for crime in the heights, then this recent outbreak of robberies and shootings downtown must be fulop's fault... vote healy and his republican councilman for DTJC councilman!
