Embankment Coalition Supporter,

Please note that the Jersey City Planning Board will NOT hear the would-be Embankment developer's applications for Major Site Plan review tonight, August 14th.

The Surface Transportation Board decision, reported in our August newsletter, has halted these land use applications.

To all those who were planning to come and make statements, thank you! You no longer have to show up to make your opinions known.

Sincerely,
Jenny Meyer

I spoke to Verizon FIOS team person yesterday, and was told to expect FIOS in Hamilton Park as early as Dec of 2007. I complained about my slow DSL - only getting 1.5 Mbps download instead of the 3.0 due to the distance to the Central
Office (too far away) - and was told that they would be upgrading it in a month or two to 3.0. I think this is BS. Most of the Verizon staff are disingenuous. They'll say anything to stop you from moving to a cable broadband connection. I doubt we'll get FIOS in the first half of 2008.

Please accept my condolences for your loss.

Don't try to time the market. Do what you have to do for your financial and emotional health. If the house is a financial burden to carry in the short term, the best thing is to sell it sooner as opposed to later.

Good luck!

Sean Connors attended the March 2007 HPNA meeting and handed out little bags of St. Patrick's day goodies, wrapped in green ribbon. From the JJ Insider column Wednesday, May 23, 2007

...About two weeks ago, Cunningham did not show up at a video taping of a question and answer session at the Loew's Theater in Jersey City, a cable television event that was moderated by this columnist. There were several excuses that are too nonsensical to even mention.

Thursday, Cunningham did not appear at the videotaping of another debate on the Bayonne-based "Mike and the Coach" public access program. This columnist was among a trio of journalists who took turns trying to horsewhip Manzo with questions about issues.

The "Mike and the Coach" question and answer session can be viewed on Bayonne's Cablevision on channel 19 starting tomorrow, 10:30 and 7:30 p.m. The rest of the schedule is May 25, 27, 28, June 1, 3, and 4 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.; May 26 and June 2 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.; May 29, 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.; May 30, 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.; May 31, 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and June 5, 9 a.m.

On the same day as the Bayonne taping, Cunningham finally explained why she does not debate. Apparently there was no conflict of dates, as claimed. She told politicsnj.com that she can't stand being in the same room as Manzo.

"Before my husband was buried, he was already trying to make deals with Bob Menendez," she told the Web site reporter. "I'm taking my campaign to the people. I have no intentions of debating."

Politicsnj.com quotes political activist and Jersey City NAACP leader Kabili Tayari talking about Manzo's chances.

"Lou Manzo has done a great job legislatively," said Tayari. "But we are talking about empowerment. Lou Manzo is a good man, but we must address affirmative action in the 31st District."

Yesterday, Cunningham appeared in Newark for the taping of a New Jersey Network question and answer session - with Manzo.

During the session, she was asked about Wallace and she praised him for having coming out of a second chance program and seeking a college degree.

It was after the taping session that she learned that Wallace had "voluntarily" stepped down from the campaign to avoid becoming an issue.

The complete article is here.

It is reasonable to assume that the winning concept will not be set in stone, and will be tweaked, based in part from community input after the balloting. Tennis courts may be changed to multi-use, the foot print of the dog run may be altered....

The ballots have been finalized and are being printed. If you might be away on June 9/10, put your request by June 2 for an absentee ballot so your vote will be counted.

May the best concept win!

4bailey, repeating your assumption that Concept D is the least-preferred design for dog-owners does not make it a true statement. What we know is that YOU don't prefer Concept D. Other dog owners seem to be open to Concept D.

There is no such thing as an "anti-dog faction." Dog ownership is part of the fabric of daily life in downtown JC. IanMac is correct in his assertion that dog owners and non-dog owners fundamentally want the same thing ? a dog run that will be used. The HPNA survey demonstrated that pet free areas are very important, and a well implemented dog run is a prerequisite for enforceable pet free areas.

The ballot form has been decided and absentee ballots will be going out soon.

I'm stating the obvious, but the "D" option has some risk, since many people believe it will have to be tweaked to make it suitable (the north run) for large dogs.

The city, in all of its wisdom, provided a total of four concepts. Go figure. The important thing, IMHO, is to move this forward so the renovation will happen.

Is it a straight, up-or-down, vote for one or is it a ranking?...

Just asking because there seems to be a trend of the anti-dog/dog netural posters to gravitate to "brewster D" - the 2 blobby dog-runs. Having 3 other concepts with a full-run effectively "splits the full-run vote" in a "vote-for-one" ballot.

Re: Hamilton Park Renovation - Meeting Dates

There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to the multi-use courts included in only one of the four concepts, but I wouldn't get too hung up on that. Even if it is called a tennis court, it can still be used for other activities.

I would like "D" - but with the south tennis court replaced by an expanded south dog run, and the north dog run removed, but that is not one of the choices.

Of the four concepts I prefer "C" - since two tennis courts aren't needed, and the play area in the NW section with the raised strutures degrades the sight line. Also, dog owners seem not to be happy with "D" - and I want the dogs playing in the dog run and not the pet free area.

Re: Hamilton Park Renovation - Meeting Dates

Dan, you were at the last park meeting, so should know better than to insinuate that the HP is being paved over and that the old growth trees will be cut down.

The healthy old growth trees will NOT be cut down. Some of the younger trees in the raised bed area may have to go, since the roots would be exposed when the raised beds are removed, which is the result of the poor design in the 70's.
There will be no additional courts in the park.
The dog run will have a natural stone surface, and will most likely be surrounded by plants and shrubs. The addition of the dog run will lead the way to the establishment of a pet free area - for the first time in the history of the park. This will likely be surrounded by low hedges or a fence. Once the dog run is built, it will be the only area in the park where dogs will be allowed off leash.
The only new area of significance that will be paved over is the expanded children' play area. The demographics the neighborhood are changing. Many families with young children will be moving in, and most people agree that the expanded children's play area is urgently needed.

Take a look at the poor condition of the lawns. Confining off leash dogs to the dog run, and only allowing team sports to be played in the paved courts will take much of the stress off of the grass.

The east side of the park will soon be restored to the original lay out - where the angles parking spaces are on McWilliams place. This will result in MORE park space and less paved area.

What we will end up with is a passive park with active areas, and more gardens.
This is something that we can all live with.

Alb, were you at the meeting? What you are saying is not true. Minnie was rude to take as much time as she did. The response from the crowd was appropriate. I spoke to a woman from my neighborhood last night about it - she had no idea who Minnie was, but was disgusted by how Minnie went to the front of room and attempted to wrestle control of the meeting.

I don't understand your point "b" - there is a children's garden open for all children to use, and two playgrounds for different age kids.

Now, she's temporarily together with this Sonia woman, who apparently has issues, just because Sonia is being polite to her, and that seems to be distorting the way she interacts with a lot of different people.

b) The park: I hope the park design people figure out some way to create some kind of play space and garden space that the children from P.S. 37 (Cordero), Garden Preschool and Hamilton Park Montessori can all use during the school day.

Sort of on topic...

From Elizabeth of Exeter, developers of Hamilton Square:

Dear Neighbors,

Please note, beginning tomorrow, March 28th we will be closing McWilliams Place from 8th to 9th Street in order to restore the east side of the park. The Park will be extended to its original size, and parking will eventually be made parallel on both sides of McWilliams Place.

This process of the park extension will take approximately 3-4 weeks (pending weather cooperation!). When McWilliams re-opens, it will be one-way only flowing south. This will be a permanent change per site plan approval.

We are truly sorry for the inconvenience. We will try our best to make the process as fast and painless as possible.

If you are concerned about parking, there are still garage spaces available on Erie & 9th street. Please call our office if you are interested in renting one. 201-435-8000.

Please spread the word, and call me with any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation!

Elizabeth

Hamilton Park's makeover: More active or passive?
Monday, March 26, 2007
By COTTON DELO
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Downtown Jersey City activists filled a room at 1 McWilliams Place on Thursday night to evaluate options for Hamilton Park's long-awaited renovation.

The engineering firm Schoor DePalma presented three park designs, relying heavily on community feedback from balloting conducted in 2005 when 1,113 ballots were cast, according to Jen Greely, president of the Hamilton Park Neighborhood Association.

An expanded children's playground, a dog run, benches, picnic tables and a Victorian-era water fountain were included in all three designs.

The first two options are essentially differentiated by the addition of a putting green. A third option calls for eliminating one of the park's two tennis courts.

Several attendees showed concern over the third option - expressing the view that elimination of active space would discourage residents from other parts of the city from using the park.

Others worried it would have a disruptive effect on passive areas.

"I'm worried if we don't have that (second) tennis court for the cricketers, they're going to move into other areas of the park," said Bob Garner, a 15-year Hamilton Park resident who suggested that a multi-use court for net sports replace one tennis court.

But some Hamilton Park residents were chagrined that removal of the basketball court wasn't included in the options.

"When they have games, there's trash that's left all over the place," said Alfred Martino, a resident since 1998. "Why isn't getting rid of the court an option?"

"This is not a gated community," responded local event producer Dale Hardman.

Ward E Councilman Steve Fulop, who moderated the meeting, said that the City Council was unlikely to approve a design that drastically reduced active space - especially in light of the thriving youth basketball leagues in Hamilton Park.

One skeptic of the process was Janet Allen, chairman of the Friends of Hamilton Park, who has advocated a park design with less active space and larger areas for landscaping and gardening.

She was met by a chorus of boos from the crowd of about 70 after commenting at length on the plans' lack of an irrigation system.

"They said they were going to spend $2 million, but how are they spending it?" asked Allen, who said a breakdown of budget and cost should be provided before the final balloting - as well as plans with more clearly decipherable features.

The final vote to choose a design to be submitted to the Council is tentatively scheduled for April 21, but voters should visit the HPNA's Web site (www.hamiltonpark.org) for confirmation.

Voting is open to all Jersey City residents ages 18 and older. Call 201-222-9070 or e-mail hpnajc@gmail.com for an absentee ballot.

The winner of the bid for the construction plans - Schoor DePalma, is under no obligation to use T&M's ideas and plans, but the plans posted are certainly similar. We don't know yet if they are proposing multi use or tennis courts - we'll know tonight.

Frulop wrote: "3) feedback with elimniation of one tennis court and inclusion of more passive area in its place"

If there were two multi use courts, I'm not sure which I would go with - A or C.

Quote:

BrightMoment wrote:
Super_furry, I'm not looking at the courts as "tennis courts" and T&M did not present them as such but as dual "multi-use" courts. Were they only dedicated to tennis I would agree that one "tennis court" would be enough. However, with the influx of residents downtown I think dual "multi-use" courts are required so that's why I support Concept A.

I agree with you that my personal choice is Concept C since it provides more free park space.
