Re: Greenville and West Side: Planning aims to save large Victorian homes - by increasing min. lot s

if you're looking to correct false statements, then contact the Jersey Journal, which has consistently reported that the R1A zone in question was bordered by Gifford Ave to the North, Harrison Ave to the South, Bergen to the East, and West Side to the West.

it is NOT incorrect to post that Fairview Avenue is not within this area, because Fairview is four city blocks north of Gifford Avenue.

If there is a discrepancy between the actual proposed R1A zone and the area reported in the Jersey Journal, that's something that should be addressed. Lord knows the JJ isn't known for its accuracy, or its fact-checking.

Everyone should continue to call their council person and implore that they bring this item back onto the agenda for the next council meeting. When was the last time a talented outsider was recruited for a JC govt job like Booker did for police chief? As long as our govt acts like a mob family we'll be screwed. Healy needs to be out on his ass, many of us who voted for him are enraged not at his drinking talents but at his same-old-crap governance.

The Parking Authority is simply the most publicly visible point of failure because its SUPPOSED TO MAKE MONEY as opposed to all the other failing services like police and sewers.

On an unrelated note - I have been seeing a lot of these on here lately ( penchant for pension) These are not just typos or misspellings( I know super-furry knows the difference between the words), but a completely different word and meaning. Alb is good at this. It leads me to believe posters are distracted by their employers trivial chores and not giving full attention to their main mission and real purpose in life ie: posting on JCL. Forget the multitasking, focus on what's important, your job is secondary and if something goes wrong only a few people will know but mistakes made here are seen by hundreds and archived for eternity. Mistakes at work can always be blamed on someone else and there is always someone else to pick up your slack. Mistakes made on JCL are your's and your's alone.

Another job for the boys and if you're not a drinking or eating buddy of Healy, you will never get a high paying public service position in Jersey City.
You would even have a hard time being a consultant for the JCPA, Australian.
And a tip for tradesmans out there, you'll have to wait a long time for your cheque, if you win a government contract or complete any service for them. I stay right away from them, unless you do government work through a subcontractor that pays my bills directly.

This would be the job I'd love to do. Challenging, but if done right would be 'profitable' with a social conscious and public approval.
One of the first things would be to mandate that parking officers have a 'social' duty to report any crime they witness, by being the eyes and ears for all emergency services - no involvement other then being a witness and reporting.
Empathy given to 'green' posted signs with clear guidelines for when infringements can be deemed 'void' when motorists write in and zero tolerance for 'red' signs.
I would also have legislation in place (if not already) for infringements to be posted when necessary - safety for officers.
Establish clear KPI's for all staff (policies and procedures)and incentives for officers on the road.

This new guy would have a 'clean slate' to do some great work for the community - I wish him well.

Ex-deputy police chief to run Parking Authority
Thursday, December 28, 2006

Mark D. Russ, a former deputy chief of the Jersey City Police Department, will take over as chief executive director of the Jersey City Parking Authority next Wednesday, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy announced yesterday.

Russ, a graduate of St. Peter's College in Jersey City and a member of the police force for 27 years, replaces Robert Dalton, who resigned earlier this month for personal reasons and had served for 16 months.

"Through his experience with the Jersey City Police Department, and as Operation Division commander, Mark Russ has had considerable dealings with the Parking Authority and has an overall understanding of how the agency operates," Healy said.

"I look forward to working with him and have every confidence he will continue the good work completed by his predecessor," Healy added.

Russ said he was "humbled" and "thankful" to the mayor for the opportunity.

"I will work diligently to make everyone proud," he said.

Worm, your description of this horrible 'pink brick' epidemic is perfect. We should flush them all down the toilet. What an eye sore.

".......so within a year or two the once ugly pink/white brick looks as though diarrhea was poured onto it only adding to it's awkward presence among the surrounding houses."

I see more and more of these cheap two family buildings every day. We should protest at 30 Montgomery (4th floor.) All the contractors have to gather there to show their plans, etc. "NO PINK BRICK" signs should be made!!!!

The city officials must stop this now. Write your council members and tell them to not allow the pink brick. Christ all Mighty! How much more expensive is something a bit more brown?!

The cheap front doors, horrible design, and horrible railings.....I could on and on......

Venting is good.

Worm, you should definitely call councilwoman Spinello if you have not already. She needs to hear that people in her Ward, especially those that live in the affected properties, want this change.

Also, send me your e-mail by PM so I can add you to our list.

I already suspected this much. I saw a show on TV a while back about these drop off boxes and the clothing was being sold for a profit in third world countries.

Still, I think it's better to drop off there then to throw good clothing away that could be worn again and recycled. But it would be nice if the clothing was given out free. People should know this so they can best decide where to drop off because NNJR is right... they are not a charity organization.

Last week on my way to shoprite at night, I saw a group of people hauling clothing out of those drop off bins. Bags and clothing was strewn on the ground. They made quite a mess! But they looked happy, like they had won the lottery. Two women were holding garments up to them to see if they would fit and appeared to be collecting things for their kids. So I decided to mind my own business. They were happy and I was happy for them.

I swore after the way the Red Cross handled the 9/11 crisis I would never donate to them again. I still drop off at the Salvation Army over by the Holland Tunnel.

The boxes at shoprite are not from a non-profit ORG. They are from American Recycling Technologies and they will get paid for whatever you drop off.

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today sued American Recycling Technologies, Inc. of East Northport, New York for labeling its clothing drop boxes in a manner that falsely leads donors to believe they are making a charitable donation. In reality, American Recycling receives and sells for a profit all the clothing left at its bins, while paying a small yearly stipend to charities listed on the boxes.

Mary Spinello has been disappointing as a council person to say the least. The property on Fairview that was mentioned in the article is a beautiful three story Victorian home. The owner of this property resides in a newly built pink brick house (complete with a cement lawn) across the street. To the left of him is another two family Victorian home (that he also owns) which recently suffered a fire. I can only imagine his intentions in regards to the property he is looking to have torn down across the street. If this ordinance is passed too late, my view wil be surrounded by pink brick and white cement. I will probably suffer severe weight loss because the sight of it will make me throw up constantly.
The laws surrounding the construction of these new brick houses are littered with holes. The houses are allowed to be built with a garage on the first level which then means that the property directly in front of it gets filled with cement. Although you are only supposed to use the driveway to access the garage, the laws cannot be enforced so as a result there are always cars parked there. The choice of white painted steel banisters inevitably rust so within a year or two the once ugly pink/white brick looks as though diarrhea was poured onto it only adding to it's awkward presence among the surrounding houses.

Homebound senior is robbed by masked duo

A bedridden Downtown Jersey City man was robbed at knifepoint by two men who cut his phone line after invading his apartment Saturday night, Police Director Sam Jefferson said.

The 64-year-old man told police that on Friday he gave a friend $5 and asked him to pick up some groceries for him. But before leaving the apartment, the friend picked up the victim's keys and pretended to open a locked cabinet, reports said.

After the friend left, the victim made his way to the door and locked it, reports said. But the next day he noticed his house key was missing from the key chain, according to reports. That night, the victim was awakened by the sound of two men in ski masks coming through his apartment door, reports said.

One of the men walked to the bed and put a knife to the victim's throat before taking $150 from his pocket, reports said. Before the pair fled the apartment the second man cut the phone line and took the victim's wallet, which was inside a backpack on a chair in the apartment.

With the phone line cut, the bedridden man was unable to get help or call police until the next day when he was visited by other friends, reports said.

The victim told police the man he gave grocery money to had never returned, even though he lives in the same building, reports said. The victim gave police the man's name and investigators are looking for him, police said.

Traffic snarls escape plan for 3 charged with robbery

By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Jersey City police arrested three Newark men on Newark Avenue after they got stuck in traffic following the robbery of a Downtown resident Sunday night, Police Director Sam Jefferson said.

At 9:17 p.m. police arrested Tyee Towell, Lavry Niamien and Daron Englin, all 20, charging each with robbing the 17-year-old Bright Street resident, police reports said. The victim flagged down police at Newark Avenue and Monmouth Street saying three men had just robbed him, reports said. He told the cops the men drove off in a black Toyota and pointed to the car that was stuck in traffic at Newark Avenue and Brunswick Street, reports said.

The officers dropped in behind the Toyota with lights and sirens on and pulled the car over at Newark Avenue and Fourth Street, reports said. After the men were out of the car, police found a black pellet gun in front of the passenger seat and proceeds from the robbery of the Bright Street boy including $1, a jacket and sweatshirt, reports said.

Trust me on this - you don't.

It's a lot more work than you think at the "amateur" level - by that I mean not "in the business" or stupid "Trump $" - you do it for your own enjoyment.

Moishe's/Guarantee is not such a bad deal - I've been using them since 2002. Besides, it's a local business that couldn't be in a more unobtrusive location for what basically is a very secure meat-locker.
