Again with this debate. Compared to the majority of other residences (in JC and elsewhere), luxury apartment buildings have a doorman, amenities like gyms, tennis courts, movie rooms etc. which some in DTJC/Newport have. Just because they don't have gold plated doorways, etc. doesn't mean it's luxury; there are degrees of it, you know.

Get over yourselves and your insecurities. There are "luxury" buildings in DTJC, so give it a rest. Just ignorant haters.

I believe there are those type of places on every block in GV and BL.

DTJC offers luxury condo/rental living
Heights offers more space for your dollar
Journal Square offers ethnic food a good investment
Newport offers unobstructed views of Manhattan

What exactly does BL and GV offer besides crime and more crime? I think it's totally right for the make it yours campaign to have most scenes filmed in the orderly neighborhoods of JC

Again with the "luxury" thing. Dude, does the word "luxury" denote that you have air conditioning? You throw that word around so loosely it has no meaning at all.

Fine fine. By your definition I live in a luxury building. I'll remind my sister of that the next time she visits and asks "does anyone ever pick up their dog crap in this town?"

TJ could fit downtown- it's a much smaller footprint, maybe in the mall when Sears and JC Penny inevitably go under.

I could do without Whole Foods.

The A&P is nice, no crowds, and you can get decent prices if you get sale items. The Shop Rite is god awful and I only deal with it if it's a big sale. The entire place is a madhouse. I've never been so aggravated to go food shopping.

The Pathmark is in desperate need of an overhaul. Imagine what that whole plaza could be with even TJ as an anchor.

Call me crazy, but I much prefer the Pathmark at Old Colony than the ShopRite at Metro Plaza. The Pathmark is less crowded, has a self service check out aisle, and I find that their inventory is pretty decent, including things I would never expect to find in a supermarket catering to a ghetto area. (And, yes, I used that term. Sue me.)

Heck, sometimes I find and buy some nice products I would normally buy at WF, but at a much lower price.

You're crazy. That is probably the only part of DTJC where I feel totally unsafe. Definitely seen drugs dealt in the parking lot. Also have seen expired foods put on the shelves. As much as shoprite is horrible, pathmark is 10x worse.

If that's the only part of JC where you feel unsafe, you are a braver man than I.

I think its funny how crazy people are about shop rite. I go there pretty often and while its not a fun place to be on weekends its actually doesn't have bad food.

Their fish is actually excellent (assuming you know even a tiny bit about fish and ask what is fresh) and if you get there when the butcher is open (probably before 6 or 7 pm) you can have them custom cut and trim any meat you like (I find they generally cut things too thin likely to keep the price down and I prefer a thick steak/pork chop)

I am lucky enough to shop during the day in the week and its totally fine. There is a decent aisle of "health" food for gluten free/ organic dry goods etc and the while there isn't a ton of organic produce there is a standard selections (apples, pears, grapes, lettuces, potatoes, tomato, broccoli etc)

that being said I would love a Fairway or something just because I like to get a lot of more specialty items (currently I just get them when I am on the road for work or I have them delivered by fresh direct)

+1. I've been to far worse markets than Shop-Rite. Are people put off by the store, or the clientele?

Side note: The Newark Whole Foods is going into the old Hahnes Department Store. They had a restaurant in there that featured a harpist at lunchtime. I wooed and won my wife there, even though we sometimes had to split a cup of soup because that's all we could afford. Okay, memory time is over, get off my lawn you kids.

Take a look the dog packs running around Tijuana or Detroit sometime. They've reverted to a feral state. People around here get upset when somebody rides their bike on the sidewalk - you think they'll like dogs tearing each other to pieces on the streets? So yeah, it's a sad reality but sometimes unadopted dogs and cats have to be put down. Tell people to stop being a**holes and allowing animals to breed indicriminately. Problem solved.

I'll admit I'm not overly well-informed on this, but the "no-kill" idea does seem like a lofty yet unrealistic goal for Jersey City. Consider that a lot of the dogs they're taking in are pit bulls or mixes, and those are very difficult to adopt out (unfairly, by the way - they're very often sweet, loving dogs). I suspect that a lot of those no-kill shelters are dealing with a lot of smaller, more benign-looking dogs.

The photos look great (and I recognized a few people I see around town). I get that it's appealing to a certain demographic...which I'm not a member of. That's fine, though, and if they decide to include some middle-aged guys in topsiders and baseball hats, they can count me in.

I am torn over whether I prefer an ISIS recruitment center versus a dollar store since both are detrimental to their neighborhoods...

Agreed. We need to clean up Grove Street and Newark Ave. Not that I have a problem with the "cheap" stores, I feel like it's time for a change to accommodate the new and diverse demographics.

Moreover, I am baffled that these stores still exist, given the rents in the neighborhood have skyrocketed. There's a national discount store at 162 Newark (or 161 Newark Ave) that looks like a head shop but sells the most random stuff. Stores like that need to go. It brings down the entire neighborhood. Especially when the crack addicts hang out in front of it in abandoned shopping carts. In any case, I would rather not have an Old Navy or a J Crew but much rather see more local businesses like Tia's or Morelees or Word succeed.

This "We need to clean this up" attitude drives me nuts. Who's "we"?? Those store owners are running a business. Presumably, they pay their rent or own their building. Who are "we" to tell them they can't do it? Here's an idea: If "we" are so offended by a dollar store, "we" should pony up the money to buy them out. Then "we" can open an artisanal pizza place, TV-filled bar or high-end dog groomer. God knows "we" need more of those.

"we" being non crack/meth addicts that live in houses, apts etc and not abandoned shopping carts that have families and pay taxes and are generally decent people and don't want to live with this sort of "filth".

If you think differently, there's something wrong with you.

JC still has remnants of it's drug/gang obsessed past that can be seen on Newark Ave. That's what needs to get cleaned up. Half the places on Newark don't even look like they make a sale a day; are they fronts for something?

Anyways, as Seagull mentioned, let's keep thread to it's original purpose.

I'm not sure how you tie JC Martin to a "gang-obsessed past", but whatever. As I said, you're welcome to open a generally decent store of your own in its place.

Fine, let's re-route this thread to its intent.

I don't get all the dollar store hatred. It's a store, not an ISIS recruitment center. Don't shop there if you don't want to. I just hate when people trash a reputable, locally-owned business by saying "their kind" isn't welcome here anymore.

As for property values, if you own in DTJC, are you really concerned? It's clearly a good investment, so relax.

They legit like most of things you mention. The hipsters like what the other hipsters tell them too. Skinny jeans are not comfortable nor are they flattering. PBR sucks. Brooklyn is so commercial and UES is now considered more "offbeat".

I basically respect every counter culture, foreign culture (been all over the world), LGBT culture, you name it except hispters...I wish all the hipsters DT would leave downtown and head to Newark already before they ruin that or whatever the next generation of "offbeat" is.

And it would be thrilling to have a "bro" place, maybe it starts to scare them off and it sure is hell better than a dollar store.

I was right there with you until you brought up the Dollar Store. It's fine to have places where young guys can get drunk and scream at TVs (not my thing, never was, but go for it). That doesn't mean you need to crowd out every business that caters to a lower-income clientele that just wants to buy a cheap sweatshirt for their kid. And hipsters are fine too. It's a big town, there's room for everybody.

Wrong, low income is old navy. Dollar stores bring down neighborhood property values and make it less likely for other businesses to come to the area. A prospective restaurant/business will choose to be located next to a "bro" establishment 100% of the time than a dollar store that sells lead toothpaste.

I would go further in saying that if you shop at a dollar store, you hate Jersey City.

The fact that you'd be happy to see an Old Navy open up in DTJC means that we have nothing to talk to each other about. But no worries, I'm sure there will be a Johnnie Rockets there, too.

Thos rifles aren't all that huge, but they're certainly disconcerting when you first see them along with all the other gear they wear. More disturbing is that it's security theater, plain and simple - two heavily-armored cops are basically useless in the event of either:
- a lone suicide bomber (a lightly-armed, well-trained officer is just as likely to stop the terrorist, since they rarely carry guns anyway)
- a large-scale group of attackers (like in Mumbai or Kenya). Two PA cops would be outgunned/outmanned in that situation.

They put those guys there to make us feel better. Plus, the overtime must be nice for them.

Re: PATH is down again today!

Last night I sent an email to Pat Foye, the exec. director of the PA. Here's what I got back. It's obviously written by some PR hack...but I was surprised they responded at all:

Mr. xxxxxx on behalf of PATH, I apologize for letting down you and tens of thousands of other customers the past two days.

We want and value your business. Here's what happened. Around 3:30pm on Sunday there was a fire on the Uptown line. No injuries to passengers or staff but any fire on a railroad is a serious matter. In trying to restore service on Sunday, there was a second fire (which FDNY and PATH anticipated and responded immediately) when the Uptown line was re-energized. Again, thankfully, no injuries.

While PATH's communication was not ideal, PATH issued six separate press releases and a multitude of social media updates since Sunday evening. I've asked Steve Kingsberry, Director of PATH to review PATH communications and to do better next time.

An update: without guaranteeing it, I believe that it is highly likely that PATH service to and from 33rd Street will operate tomorrow morning. We'll announce that as soon as we possibly can.

Finally, hundreds of PATH people worked starting at the time of the fire to stabilize the system, assess damage and push to restore service. I thank each of them for their work.

Please forgive the inconvenience of the past two days.

Pat

Re: UBER - car service in Jersey City

Home away from home

I've been a huge Uber supporter, since I love any business that disrupts old business models and encourages competition. But there's a dark side to all of this - talk to any Uberx driver or read some of their blogs, and you'll see that the company has engaged in some pretty shady tactics. They dropped prices this year to increase ridership, promising drivers that they'd make up the difference in volume...but at the same time they're flooding the streets with new cars and drivers. Lots of these guys are making minimum wage or less, and they're pretty much locked in because they've leased cars that they now have to pay for.

Maybe you don't care about this, and maybe you'd say "sorry sucker, you bought into a bad deal." But myself, I'm going to start giving my Uberx driver an extra $5 in cash. I'll feel like a sport, and the guy will increase his margins.
