Good place to buy a fairly large quantity of dry ice?

Toying with the idea of creating a little Halloween display. Those fog machines just aren't powerful enough. Anyone know where you can pick up dry ice in or around J.C.?

Re: PATH train to Newark Airport - Yes!

The 33rd train would just continue from JSQ to Newark Penn Station. The track is already there, its just that trains are not scheduled to run from Newark to 33rd (they did after the 9/11 attack though).

The issue is getting the PATH train from Newark Penn Station to EWR.

I got shocked at some of the estimates to do the extension such a short distance to EWR. I figured they would be building it along an existing ROW and it wouldn't be 100's of millions of bucks.

Just got back from my friend's place in South Jersey. He raises chicken. I told him about the council's proposal. He informed me that if chicken coops are not cleaned constantly, they stink all to hell.

Can't be worse than the building next to me that smells like cat piss.

It must be just the downtown area. Up here in the Heights, water has been normal so far. No sediment and the chlorine isn't any stronger than usual.

I plan on adding some heavy duty iron gates to my buildings (had another break-in). I noticed some of the guys recommended appear to no longer be in business.

Harrington Park, NJ, Sep 16, 2012, 9:00 PM United Water customers in Jersey City, Hoboken and Weehawken may notice a change in the taste and odor of their drinking water. Despite the differences, the water continues to meet all the standards for safe drinking water. It can still be used for drinking, cooking and bathing. ?United Water is testing and monitoring the water quality very closely and laboratory tests show that it meets the standards for safe drinking water,? said Jim Glozzy, general manager. He explained that musty or earthy odors can occur when reservoir levels are down. Certain taste and odor episodes can also be caused by turnovers in the reservoir. This occurs when the surface water cools and sinks to the bottom, causing a disturbance to the lower water layers. The odor may be stronger when using hot water for showers, bathing or washing dishes. In addition, the odor may be increased if the hot water heater is only used on a limited basis. Glozzy explained that changes in the raw water supply require United Water to modify the location of the reservoir intake and the treatment process. ?We are working to resolve this matter as quickly as possible,? he said. Water supplies are natural systems that respond to changes in the environment. As a result, it is difficult to predict exactly how long it will take to resolve this problem, Glozzy noted. Customers may find that the taste of the water improves if they keep it in an open pitcher in the refrigerator.

Per United Water's website, they are aware of the issues.

Maybe some equipment malfunctioned and put too much chlorine in the water?

Did you try clearing or browser cache? Sometimes not doing so for a while can screw up online payments and other processes that use forms.

I don't trust those cameras. A couple weeks back I drove through an intersection near St. Peter's College (JFK Blvd.). The red light camera was flashing away as cars drove past it. The light was green.

Would you willingly latch your campaign to someone who is the political equivalent of the Titanic? The muni election isn't until mid 2013. By then, every Democratic operative is going to be distancing themselves as far as possible from the memory of Obama.

Well...

After getting nailed by aphids and white flies, followed by damage due to the extreme heat this year, I finally got my black krim tomato plant to grow back.

Now it's dying from some sort of blight (which is also attacking my cherry tomato plant).

I can't win...

On a brighter note:

I think I came up with a decent design for a rooftop cold box that should allow growing veggies all year round. If my finances allow (my budget is competing with my wife's desire to buy furniture), I am going to build a couple and see how they work out.

If the project is successful, I will post the details so others with flat roofs can copy.

Re: Gov. Christie joins Goya in groundbreaking of $127 million facility in Jersey City

Though things have improved in the last few years (i.e. the Legislature passed a more business friendly business depreciation), NJ is still a very business hostile state.

A better goal would be to move to a more advantageous tax and regulation regimen for all businesses; not just the ones with the lobbying muscle. For example: get ride of the onerous alternative minimum business income tax, which can become an 'income' tax on revenue. This hurts low margin businesses.

As for Jersey City: Talk to anyone who has tried to open a business in this city. The delays dealing with multiple agencies, often doing overlapping inspection (i.e. multiple fire-safety from more than one department) can bankrupt the little guy pretty quick. I know a woman who opened a salon that ended up paying rent waiting for weeks for the building inspectors to show.. and then show up again for a re-inspection.

I have that type of dishwasher.

You open the door to set the controls. The dishwasher will activate on the setting you have chosen when you close the door.

Reminds me how the prisoners held on to their money in the book 'Papillon' (read it as a kid). One prisoner got gutted because the others thought he had some serious cash up where the sun don't shine.

Have an Asian Pear tree that was knocked over in a storm, Cut it way back and its growing fine. I just need to see if it is still possible to put it back upright again. It's too big for me to do it on my own by hand.

Anyone here able to recommend a landscaper / tree guy?

Agree with this:

JC is an ideal place to have hotels. You get easy access to NYC and you can use EWR over Laguardia (a nightmare of an airport to get to).

I use the PATH-NJ Transit-Monorail link when I am traveling light. When carrying a lot of baggage, I pay the $28+ tip for car service to the terminal. Before the ramp to the Skyway was blocked off (construction), it took all of 15 minutes to get to EWR.

How old are the liens? Generally with liens, you can foreclose after two years.

I have a guy I use for small stuff like: Installing a new door, some trim work, tiling a common hallway, installing new stair treads, etc.

I wouldn't recommend him for doing fine finishing restoration of moulding in a high end brownstone, but I would for a storm door.

If you want his contact info, PM me.

Things I have heard from others:

It is a bit pricey, especially the parking.
Some liked it.
Some found it over-rated.

If you are willing to take a road trip, there is a working narrow gauge railroad down in Allaire State Park. It tends to be popular with kids.

A really good storm door, like from Harvey Building Products costs about $300 (insulated door, removable glass, etc.)

You are being charged more for a storm door than a solid hardwood door (installed) would cost.

Was there a lot of other work involved? Like rebuilding a decrepit wall that the door was being installed?

Extending either the light rail or the PATH to EWR is a no-brainer.

The PA did a study on extending the PATH from Penn Station Newark to EWR.

From Wiki:

The Port Authority has allocated $31 million to conduct a feasibility study of extending PATH 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Newark Penn Station to Newark Liberty International Airport.[47]

If the project is deemed to be possible from an engineering, operational, and financial standpoint, the Port Authority would include funding for the project in its Capital Plan. The extension to Newark Airport was estimated in 2004 to cost $500 million.[48] Currently the New Jersey Transit train fare to Newark Airport Station is the same coming from New York Penn Station and Newark Penn Station, making the potential alternative (PATH expansion) cheaper, if slower-traveling.
