As a regular who's been going to White Star since before Matt owned the place, I have to offer some counterpoint to a few of the recent posts.

White Star is - by far - the friendliest and most consistent local spot in all of downtown. Any place can have a bad night, but if you bring a problem/issue/suggestion to Matt's attention, it will be addressed.

Where else can a youngish crowd find such fairly priced food; a fight-free environment; no drug sales; great buy-backs; bartenders that don't change every other week, and an owner that is on-site and gives a damn every single day?

NEA Announces Recovery Grants to Support Arts Jobs
Newbie
Newbie

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has released their grant guidelines http://www.nea.gov/recovery/nea-recovery-programs.html for applying for economic stimulus and job recovery arts funds. The American Recovery & Reinvestment Act provides $50 million to support jobs in the arts through NEA grants.

On the NEA Recovery webpage, http://www.nea.gov/recovery/nea-recovery-programs.html, the new guidelines provide application dates, eligibility criteria and potential project outlines. In order to get money out to the arts field as quickly as possible, the NEA is fast-tracking the process. The deadline for applying for the direct grants is April 2, 2009, with grants being awarded as early as July 1, 2009. These direct grants will be available to arts organizations as non-matching one-time grants of $25,000 or $50,000. Local arts agencies are provided $100,000 or $250,000 for re-granting activities.

One immediate issue of concern is that the NEA is requiring that any applicant for the direct grants must have received an NEA grant within the last four years. The agency has set this requirement as a result of direction from the White House Office of Management & Budget (OMB). OMB has recommended obligating funds to existing award recipients as a method of ensuring that the applicant pool can be considered quickly and to ensure quality. Complete details on applicant eligibility and the rest of the recovery grant program are available on the NEA's Recovery website http://www.nea.gov/recovery/nea-recovery-programs.html.

If you have any questions, please contact Tom McClimon on the Conference staff at: mcclimon@usmayors.org or 202-861-6729.

Not so fast! Our neighbor had this issue, got their own plumber who discovered an issue that was neglect of the city's contractors who concreted a pipe and a piece of the concrete went through the piping. So it ended up being a city issue but the neighbor was required to pay up and document everything...

One thing that stands out in my mind was that Kook and Sons came in with an estimate that was double the price, and they wanted to demo the slate.

Don't ever use Kook and Sons, they are way overpriced! I used them about 1 year ago and was not happy at all.

Canada and England do not have crappy healthcare. Too few dentists, maybe, and less importance placed on smile quality, perhaps, but not crappy healthcare.

From Hoboken411.com:

With the ?biggest? partying day of the year to kickoff bright and early tomorrow morning - here?s some last minute information to help you out:

It costs money to be stupid

The Hoboken Police have a ?zero tolerance? policy on St. Patrick?s Day. That means that if you act like a moron (drink on the street, pee where you?re not supposed to, or act ?uncivilized? or unruly) you will be fined to the max. That includes $1000 tickets! (over 500 issued in 2007!)

Healthcare reform to an extent I agree with but this just wont work.

FYI canada and england have crappy health care. Next time you see an English person just say smile....

Re: New Jersey Getting $425M in Stimulus for Mass Transit
Home away from home
Home away from home

No, you are not reading it wrong. The stimulus bill does not provide nearly enough money for new projects. This is not to say all of the "deferred maintenance"that transportation authorities from around the country have been postponing for years doesn't need funding, but more money should have been spent on new projects. Thanks to the compromise of bi-partisanship, the stimulus bill is nothing more than a large spending package. There will probably be a new bill in 18 months when this watered down nonsense fails to accomplish its goals.

Seems like a lot of maintenance for existing mass transit and some upgrades to existing properties...but no new mass transit. I hope this is a bad summary or I am misinterpreting. Am I reading correct that the only increased capacity project funded by our state $$ is taking people in and out of NYC? Besides stimulating construction jobs, if the goal was to get more people using mass transit, i dont see these as helping at all. I wish some was going to the Lackawanna cutoff project or something similar. Thankfully we already have the most sophisticated mass transit in the US thanks to the folks 100+ years ago who built it. I was hoping we would make progress towards competing with Europe and Asia however with this package.

dntshoot: The Independent is also in the process of finishing up our 2009 Jersey City "election central" project, where you'll be able to find out who's running for what, along with biographies and news on that person culled from our own reporting and other sources. We plan on unveiling it after the March 19 filing deadline for candidates. That way we'll know for sure who is on the ballot and who isn't.

Also check with us over the next month as we'll be doing q&a's with school board candidates. (school board election is on April 21).

Plumbing blockage between house and street
Home away from home
Home away from home

Need advice. From the basement, I can see stagnant water in the pipe that goes under the house. Pushed in another 3-4 feet..distance to ground level, and I am assuming where the pipes from the house connect to the lines leading to the sewers, and no blockage there. So it appears that the blockage is not inside my house but rather in the lines leading to the sewers.

Not sure if I should call a plumber or a city agency since the blockage is not really inside my house.

Any advice/ideas?
