Yeah, you're right -- it totally sucks having more restaurants, bars, and things to do locally on a Friday night without having to cross a river or two.

A piece of me dies every time I cross the turnpike extension and see a town trying to be Hoboken and Williamsburgs love child. If there was an icon for a face with a tear coming down I'd use it.

A big problem with apartment/condo noise conflicts is that there ends up being a tyranny of the most sensitive people in the building. You might be living in your place happily for years, and then some super-sensitive person moves in upstairs or downstairs and wants to change the way you live.

In these situations, I feel that both parties need to be willing to change, not just the person creating the offending noise.

I should clarify because it really does not affect my day to day life that much to the point where I'm ready to move or make a big deal. I think more in terms of re-sale in a situation like this. Also the fact that I was told that sound is really not that much of an issue kinda bugs me. I do think that by simply putting down an area rug most of the sound SHOULD be muffled from the apt above me. I figure since he just moved in about a month ago he just needs time to get the place set up.

coronalime, there is a difference between talking to your neighbors about something and complaining. You have to be nice, and if it doesn't work then go from there. What does it cost to have a sound-proofing company come in and install a drop ceiling to muffle the noise? Sounds expensive. Not everyone in this situation has money to spend on something like that. We don't even know if the original poster, crushthedemoniac is renting their place or owns it. If they are renting, why on earth would they spend money to put in a drop down ceiling?

I do own the unit, the thing that kinda gets me is one of my first questions was about the sound from upstairs and how it would affect my unit. I was told that unless the person upstairs was doing an Irish jig or something you would not hear much. I don't think I'll go as far as to sound proof it, I guess I'll just give him some time since hes only been there a month ,and hopefully he picks up an area rug soon. One positive is at night I don't have the same problem because the units bedrooms are right above/below each other and they have carpeting.

Anybody else dealing with loud footsteps above them due to hardwood floors? I cant hear the person doing anything else, but the footsteps are clear as day. Now if the person decided to put down an area rug would this dull the noise? Or do I just have to deal with it?

And yes I detest teens, cell phones and babies as much as everyone (in a movie theatre), I just know how to avoid them. JCList cracks me up.

I too wonder where some of these people came from.

So is this the new trend like all the people in Williamsburg who suddenly find it ironic to sleep any place but their beds, ie tents. Im not trying to be a d*** im genuinly curious. As far as saftey I dont think it will be a problem, might have some bugs crawl on your face but nothing to severe.

Why are you so concerned about trying to "build awareness of Jersey City among Manhattanites."?? Who cares unless you're in the real estate biz trying to sell "Crytsal Point " (sic) or other gasbag condos.

Listen, I loved Manhattan when I lived there and likewise Brooklyn and never thought about JC or other places. I love where I live now in JC too and don't feel the insecurity of giving a flip what Manhattanites think of JC. Get over it and grow a pair.

Thaaaaaank you, finally a voice of reason. I can understand that the owners want to raises the property values of their investments, but seriously who gives a shit what "Manhattanites" think? Im on a tight budget right now. This place has everything and more that anyone could need in an apartment, and the building itself is brand new. I just would prefer a better view which unfortunatly it can't provide. For the price its going for though I think id be an idiot to pass it up.

I have to agree with dieselpowerd - you should not settle for less than you want. What may end up happening is that the very thing you aren't getting becomes the ONLY thing you focus on once the deal is sealed. You can never be called an idiot (even by your own mouth) for passing up something that you have doubts about now. Think into the future about resale...what you're willing to concede to out of fear may end up being the exact thing that prohibits the next buyer.

Best of luck and trust your gut.

True. Im already in the process of buying, pretty much just being reviewed by the attorney as of now. I do have till Friday to back out though. I will get the first time home buyer rebate since I made it in just in time so thats a big reason to stay with the condo. I also found one condo that I liked slightly better at around the same cost, only prob there is no tax abatment, and the prop tax is over 8k!

I understand that people want to own because then they feel like they've "made it". But if you are on a "tight budget" I'm not sure owning is for you. Just my 2 cents.

By tight budget I mean more along the lines of I cant afford a 500k luxury studio.

Again, it's not clear whether your post is directed at me or not, but when did I tell you to leave JC? I thought you didn't even live in JC?

Regarding your "hard to get along with" comment (again not sure if this is directed at me), but you are the only person on this message board who I don't get along with on a regular basis.

I've never been called pretentious before. I don't know where you would even get the impression that I am pretentious. Pretentious means having an over-inflated sense of self worth, which is a quality that I really don't think I have ever exhibited here, or in "real" life.

Correct. Crushthedemoniac apparently has the ability to judge people as "pretentious pricks" without ever meeting them or knowing anything about them. What a skill he's got.

Exactly just how you judge people in any other section of Jersey City. Get a clue buddy, you make it hard for anyone to get along with you. Yeah, because we ALL know that PD in this town is top notch. Chief Wiggum is a better cop by accident. The only time the rank and file give a shit about anything is when they are TOLD to, the rest of the time they are all about doing as little as possible, while trying to collect as much as possible.

And this differs from 90% of society how? Im not the biggest fan of police myself, alot of them are worse than criminals but if there is any real danger something tells me they wouldnt just turn the other cheek. Its not like bums, pan handlers or any other seedy llooking person pay them off to turn a deaf ear.

I have seen the police around twice, I've been woken up by large crowds yelling just outside on Newark, especially on weekends.

When I moved to JC last July, I had no problem or worries walking home from the Path by myself. Now, I am uncomfortable walking after dark, there are packs of people running around. Even if I dress ugly they harass seemingly any women that walks by.

There is a homeless man who has been stationed for months at the corner of Cole Street and Newark also - I am really tired of being begged for money every day when I walk home - the police need to be patroling this neighborhood much more frequently, and they need to crack down not only on the shady people running around but also the panhandlers. There are at least three, they are in the same place every day.

The lucky 7 bar has been filmed for NBC medical drama "Mercy" at least three times this year, in February they made a fake St Patrick's day fair, and they were filming last week over here also. There were six cops standing around for the St Patrick's filming doing virtually nothing, when there was a panhandler begging within a block of them who is there every day.

No offense to you personally but what exactly did you expect upon moving here? I dont get this mentality that all the transplants have where they think they are entitled to some enchanted mecca where they will encounter nothing but "professionals" and all american gentrifiers on their evening walks. Perhaps JC is not for you.
