The whole thing is just really, really scary and disturbing. I used to live just a few houses down from that guy. And the business with the mother/son is really Norman Bates.

What really scares me the most is that he will not spend that much time under lock and key. Thank God that the quick-thinking, brave little girl escaped this time, but when he gets out of jail there is a good chance that he will try something again and succeed. This will be especially true if his mother is not around to watch.

People like Mr. Luigi should NEVER, EVER be let loose again. Or if he is set loose, he should have his arms and legs cut off so he can't grab or chase any more little girls.

It's nice that you want to start a business, but be forewarned about opening the kind of business that you describe. I've been living downtown for about five years, and I've seen many similar type stores open and close within a few years - Imaginatrium was one of them. There seem to be a lot of people who you want as your target market walking around on the streets, but for some reason, they don't seem to be able to support a cute little bookstore/cafe.

Before you spend any money on a new business or take out a business loan, I suggest that you do a lot of homework. Asking around on this list is a good idea, but maybe talking to successful and unsuccessful local business owners might help. Also, do some market research - maybe even hire a professional.

I don't want to discourage you. I think if it's run really well, a business that you describe can prosper here. I just hate to see another business like Imaginatrium or Janam open only to close a few years later.

Good luck.

Re: Shooting near LSP

I lived in the neighborhood for about a year, and although crime was a factor, I have to agree with Bodhipooh that it's the quality of life stuff that make the neighborhood more " undesirable" for some. In the summer the noise level was pretty bad, especially on holiday weekends. The litter, unkept houses, lack of trees and flowers, blaring radios, and vermin were intolerable for us.

I know there are a lot of nice people down there hoping that the neighborhood will improve and doing a lot to help bring that about. I wish them luck. We just couldn't wait as we had kids, and didn't want to raise them there.

And that park/basketball court near Johnston Avenue that was mentioned is absolutely horrible. Dropping a bomb on that place would do the neighborhood good.

And to all of those who may judge me for being intolerant. I want to say, " Don't judge until you have been there". My husband, who was raised abroad and in Suburban Virginia has a different and more liberal view that I. We were sitting outside our house in Lafayette on day as people walked by throwing McDonald's containers on our sidewalk, cars drove by blaring mysoginistic, crime glorifying music, and the lady next door came out of her house mouthing off to her young kids. My husband turned to me and said, " You know, six months in the ghetto will suck the liberal right out of you".

Your roommate sounds like a major stuck up b**ch. I can smell a Jersey Girl with an inferiiority complex as quickly as I can smell Elizabeth because I kinda have one. Anyone who considers the opinion of someone just cause they're of "blue chip stock" needs to live in Westport.

Re: Downtown Jersey City List -> Jersey City List
Home away from home
Home away from home

I grew up here, and I remember when the mall and the first newport buildings were planned and built. Everybody like myself who was pro gentrification knew and hoped that that newport and the mall was a huge anchor that would increase gentrification. We had seen what had happened in Hoboken, and it was already happening in areas like Van Vorst Park and Hamilton Park. Hamilton Park was not that bad - never like Greenville or Bergen Lafayette.
I also rememember that the downtown residents, especially those from Hamilton Park area voiced concerns over the big suburban mall and gated buildings. They were especially upset that they would have no access to the PATH station when the mall closed. The compromise was to leave the mall open at night so that people could walk through it.
I don't like the idea of building a big mall or gated buuildings in the middle of an urban area either, but you have to know what it was like for people back in the mid eighties. The city had reached rock bottom and, for me and others, Newport was such a big development that offered so much hope for the city to spring back. Simon Lefrak held all of the cards because people wanted it. It's not like now where the ball of gentrification has been rolling for decades and people have the confidence to risk a developer pulling out.

I know there are people who will respond to this by saying that the people of downtown and JC never wanted Newport or gentrification. That is true for some, but not true for me or anyone I knew.

That's great news about Cammarano. Once a few of them start resigning it puts more pressure on the others to follow suit.

I found Cammarano to be one of the most arrogant. Good riddance.

I live on the same street. The neighborhood is great, and the neighbors on the street are very friendly and nice. I went to a party in one of the big lofts, and it was beautiful. Most of the people who live in the building seem really nice too.

Covetalker, like the rest of them, he has no hint of honor. These people go into politics so they can feed from the trough. He, like the others, were not honest, good-intentioined men who were tempted by vast quantities of money. They sold the city short for a few thousand bucks.....pathetic.

None of them has the grace or class to resign. I'll be at the meeting.

This is the same guy who took money from the developer for agreeing to help him with environmental and traffic concerns.

What a mensh. The activists he protested with should get together and egg his house.

I know this is slightly off topic, but Healy looks TERRIBLE. Saw him last night on the news. His face is all busted up with some sort of rash, he has a big bandage on his face, and he's a disheveled mess. He looks like Robert the Bruce's father in Braveheart. Did he fall or something? Or maybe he's super stressed out over this scandal.

Whether Healy is proven to be found guilty remains to be seen. However, he is definitely guilty of stealing Steve Fulop's line. " We will continue to conduct open and honest government". Is he for real? His deputy mayor was just arrested for back door deals and bribery.

That's a fascinating article! And makes me wonder if the "Journal" in question is the same poor Jersey Journal that we are saddled with today. Do they still make most of their money from the tax sale advertisements?

Without real investigative journalism the rats will crawl right back into city hall as soon as the FBI lights get turned off.

I admit that this city could do with a real newspaper to investigate these clowns, but the real problem lies with the voters. Don't forget the ridiculously small percentage of people who actually went to the polls in the last mayoral election. I have never maintained that the people of JC chose Mayoral Healy or the rest of his "team" on the council. Rather, we've got what we have in city hall because the vast majority of the people in this city don't care.

But you can be damn sure that the people whose jobs and connectiions depend on this administration made it their business to go to the polls.

Just answering "in good hands" with "like Allstate" could mean anything...basically a "joke".

What you say makes sense. However, you must not know Hudson County. The pols here would chance their careers for $100.00. Bribery on all levels is so rampant it's just par for the course. Nobody thinks they'll ever get caught. Plus They just can't, can't keep their sticky fingers away from money.

Dr. Lombardi is not downtown, but he's in JC and he's an excellent orthodontist-one of the best in North Jersey. I went to him as a young adult. He's on Kennedy Blvd, about a 15 minute walk from Journal Square.

Those videos are disgusting. Guys hitting girls is unacceptable.

You know, in my parents' generation, Jersey City was filled with poor and working class Irish and Italians. There were many fistfights, but there certainly weren't many shootouts (aside from Casa Nostra stuff ;) ) , and there sure as hell weren't any boys punching girls. And I can assure you that if a boy punched a girl, he would be "taken care of" by the other boys, or the brother of the girl.

So why are these beastly children doing things like this? What is the cause? A combination of things?

Poor parenting? Yes, I think so. What about the influence of hip hop culture? Much hip hop music is notorious for including lyrics that are less than respectful towards women. Is this a factor? I think it is.

I'm prepared to get slammed for that ... by those whose hearts bleed.

Yep, I grew up here in the seventies in an Irish/Italian neighborhood and we were pretty damn poor. However, we were strictly forbidden to fight anyone or even hang out on a street corner for that matter. I have six sisters, and we would have been in the house for a year if we ever behaved like the animals in that video.

There was plenty of white trash around who wanted to fight at times. I'm a huge chicken, and I would just run away yelling that my father would kill me if I was caught fighting.

From my experience I know that decency has little to do with economics.......savages.

There's a lot more to being a good citizen than maintaining your property and being respectful of your neighbors. Why do you think the founding fathers created a system of public education that was to be paid for by local real estate taxes? Think about it.
