Re: New Jersey Nears Vote on Letting Gays Marry

Christie during the campaign actually promised to do much more than just veto any bill that would create marriage equality. He vowed to work actively against any possibility of legalizing same sex marriage in NJ, which means he wants to proactively pass a Prop 8 type law that makes creating marriage equality by law impossible. I called his campaign HQ during the election and they confirmed this.

Fixate much?

This thread fulfilled Godwin's Law in not record but near record time.

Outlawing pit bulls is as stupid as outlawing guns. Operator behavior is the problem, not, by and large, the animal.

If there's a breed propensity to violence, in absence of human influence, I haven't ever read anything about it. I'd be interested in seeing it if anyone has.

All animals can be dangerous.

when i saw this thread i was hoping it was an old thread that someone had just commented on. what a bummer.

we own a pit. why? because when we went to liberty about 80% of the dogs there were pits. why? because lots of kind-hearted animal lovers have a predisposed opinion about pits (and this included me before we adopted one) and don?t want to adopt them, and because a lot of the people who come in looking exclusively for pits can be shady characters.

yesterday i was volunteering at liberty and a guy wanted to know about one of the pits in there. i had a bad vibe about him and told him that pits required experienced handlers and that we would approve him to adopt a pit after he attended four of our training sessions with one of us. then he took off. am i right about my bad vibe? i don?t know, but better safe than sorry.

the two descriptions of the breed that i agree with are that they are strong and they are persistent. therefore, owning a pit means that basic precautions that should be taken with all dogs are things that must be done with pits.

my dog is great. i know a lot of pits that are great. but I also know that i won?t make anyone an automatic pit lover based on a post on a message board. there was an interesting article a few years ago in the new yorker, i believe, which featured stats about pit bull attacks, and the upshot was that the people who own pits that have attacked people are almost always individuals with checkered pasts who should not be allowed to own an animal, or a gun, or even a moving vehicle.

unfortunately, if such people continue to have access to pits, this kind of thing will continue, and all of the goodwill that my dog creates when the kids at the bus stop we walk by pet him will be gone when some other moron-owned pit has another headline-inducing incident.

i was hesitant about adopting a pit. i talked to some owners, consulted message boards and read a couple of books, and made a decision that i'm really happy about today. i just wanted to post that i am a happy a pit owner, but i don't have any judgment towards people who have little direct experience with the breed for having certain opinions.

i just think this story is a bummer.

We've been using Bocas for almost 4 years for boarding and love them. Whenever we see the van as we're out for a walk, the driver always honks and, if he can, comes over to pet the dog (who leaps with joy to see a friend). And over a year after they stopped boarding cats, whenever I call to make a reservation for the dog they still remember our cat's name and ask how she's doing.

I can't recommend them highly enough. I never worry about leaving Lenny there when we're out of town.

Monday, December 07, 2009

A Jersey City man who went out to buy a cigarette Saturday morning got robbed by 15 men after one of them demanded a smoke and he refused to cough it up, officials said.

The 23-year-old Bidwell Avenue man said it was 1:45 a.m. when he walked to a fried chicken restaurant at Bidwell and Ocean avenues to buy a cigarette, reports said.

As he left the restaurant, a man approached and demanded the cigarette.

When the victim refused, the man said to the group he was with, "Let's rob him," reports said.

Some 15 men surrounded the victim, took his jacket and went through his pockets. It was not clear from reports if anything besides the jacket was taken.

FLOODING CAUSES TRAFFIC DISRUPTION
Water main breaks on Route 440

Monday, December 07, 2009

A water main break caused flooding at a chromium remediation site on Route 440 in Jersey City Friday night, but police said there was no danger to the public, officials said.

Police responded to the Honeywell site at Route 440 near Culver Avenue at 7:30 p.m. and were told there was a loud explosion in a sprinkler room, reports said.

Water was pouring from an 8-inch main at the location and flooding the area, reports said.

The water was finally shut off at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, reports said.

The flood snarled traffic along Route 440 and prompted the closure of the two northbound lanes for a period, according to police reports.

Police said there is no danger of chromium exposure to the public.

The site is undergoing a multi-million dollar cleanup as a result of a lawsuit that was filed by the Interfaith Community Organization, a church-led nonprofit.

7 left homeless, pet killed by fire caused by candle

Monday, December 07, 2009
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A dog died and seven residents were left homeless Saturday night as a result of a Jersey City basement fire apparently sparked by an unattended candle, officials said.

Firefighters responding to the two-story building at Bartholdi and Ocean avenues on an 8:27 p.m. alarm found heavy fire in the basement that spread to the first floor before it was under control at 8:57 p.m., Jersey City Fire Director Armando Roman said yesterday.

Three adults and four children were left homeless by the fire, which also claimed the life of the pet in the basement apartment, Roman said.

One of the residents told firefighters they left for a about half hour to run and errand and came back to find their home on fire.

The tenant said a candle was lit in the apartment and she could not remember if it was blown out before they left on the errand, reports said.

Fire department arson investigators responded and determined the fire was accidental, Roman said.

Why, oh why is this still being debated. I have addressed this several times. The ordinance ALREADY EXISTS. Why doesn't somebody call a meeting and I'll BRING THE COPY???

This is NOT NEW. There is an ordinance that has long been in existence that states that with the exception of one area downtown and the area around the college, booting is ONLY ALLOWED if the person has 3 unpaid parking tickets!!

This is NOT NEW.

I guarantee it.

Thank you.

Sorry for the exasperated tone, but I feel like I'm typing in invisible ink!!!

If you find a similar place as mine with "the same responsibilites" for 1650 please let me know!

it's per individual basis. how much of that 2800 can you

1) get back from tax deductions?
2) as principal towards the mortgage
3) will you qualify for the 8500 free cash

add all up and make a determination, there are no blanket statements. But one thing is for sure though, if you believe the price will continue to drop another 10-20%, there is NO REASON to buy whatsoever. I bought because i feel downtown jc real estate prices has reached a flatline and the potential for another 10-20% drop is a low probability. Also my numbers made more sense - 3000 buying vs 2300 renting, plus a nicer dig not to mention the current low rates. So it wasnt a hard decision after finding a good bargain....

Another approach to evaluate real estate values (some would argue it's the only true way to evaluate RE values) is to consider the income of people buying and living in the area. i.e., what can the people afford to pay for housing?

Assuming a $400K condo:
100K down payment.
300K mortgage at 6%, 30 year fixed
$6000 annual property tax
$500/month maintenance

That would be a $2800 monthly payment. (not including PMI or other expenses)

Don't forget that property taxes and interest payments are tax-deductible, that substantially reduces your $2800 in real terms. And a lot of buildings around here have tax abatements. In my case, my total monthly condo payments aren't much more than I would be paying in rent if I were renting a similar apartment....

A smart move, if you are living alone, and paying rent then yes buy buy buy. Especially a condo where you will have the same responsibilities as paying rent. Save your money, savor the future.

Sorry. You do not and should not have the right to euthanize anyone else's dog. If their dog harms someone else, of course, there should be consequences. But a free society should not allow pre-emptive murder of other people's property.

Re: Jersey City's Libraries

I hate to say it, but I think the city's libraries are pretty pitiful. There is a dearth of interesting new literature, they have difficulty keeping track of their inventory, and the hours are generally more suited to the unemployed than those of us who actually work and don't get home until after 6:00 or 7:00 at night. I'm an avid reader, and I make much better use of the Grace Church Sunday used book sale than the city's "libraries."

I've been taking my dog there for about 4 years, and I really like that I can board him with his own food, toys, treats, and bedding, and it's all washed when I pick him up. I travel from time to time for work, and sometimes both my husband and I are out of town at the same time, but thanks to Jared and his staff, my dog gets the love and attention he needs when we're away.

When I drop him off, he doesn't even look back - just runs up to the staff to give them kisses. He recognizes them (and they run to him) on the street too. They're all clearly "dog people," and it shows. I can't recommend them enough, and can't imagine a better place to board your dog.

It is about time. The booting policy is completely unfair and needs to be changed. Go Steven Fullop!!!

Next, we need to address the sweeper scam! That things doesn't even pick up garbage of the streets, just smears it around. I'm sick of the $42.00 tickets already, either get something that really cleans the streets, or let us sleep in peace in the morning.

I know Steven a little, and he seem to really care about our city. Lets hope the system doesn't break him down (for our sake).

I don't know of any list , but here are 2 of the missing #s:

PS#18 was on Storms Avenue. It has been remade into apartments. The building is at least 100 years old.

PS#1 is (or was) on Duncan between Blvd and West Side Ave - closer to West Side Ave. I think now its an annex to PS #23.

There's not really any big businesses close buy other than the high school. They're "looking to sell to" any buyers they can find willing to pay the price :)

Seems like a smart move by the developer to change plans and sell whole floors rather than dozens of smaller condos. I wish them the best.

And why do I get the feeling this is going to devolve into another Beacon-bashing thread? sjcarolan has us well on our way...

Yes Vlad is a jackass, his brother is now in a hospital, Vlad beats people in the street, he once untied my dog from his fence while i was inside Basic and i almost killed him... BUT, I really just wanted to know about the space. I really don't think he is going to be involved in the resturant. From further investigation i found out that an Egyptian man is going to be opening up an Italian resturant. I am sure that some one on here will ofcourse have something smart to say about that!!!!!

As was mentioned upthread, you can take the Port Jervis line from Hoboken to Tuxedo. There is an entrance to Harriman State Park within walking distance from the station.

You can also take the Morris and Essex Line from Hoboken to Millburn. There is an entrance to South Mountain Reservation across from the station.

I have done day hikes from these locations, but they should work for overnight camping as well.
