I had Verizon Fios in the Heights and I found it to be a much better product than what is offered by Comcast. The picture was far superior and the few times I needed to contact customer service I was always treated with respect. On the other hand, now that I moved to JSQ, I'm back with Comcast and I am not too happy. They just don't understand the concept of customer service and act as though they are doing you a favor when you call or need something done. I can't wait for the day Fios is available on my street.

nice, I was hoping that was it, there have been 10 trucks parked here also so I figured somethin was goin on. I just signed a damn contract with comcast also, I think it is $75 to break it....it might actually be worth it and maybe Verizon can give comcast contract breakers a deal or something.
funny enough there was a note on my door saying there will be service interruption with comcast because they are switching us over to the new system...hopefully that means more HD (though doubtful)

This is an amazing story, the fact that they lived, the fact that they are relatively unharmed! If you don?t live in the area you may not fully appreciate the topography of that particular Cliffside. The story is not exaggerating, the portion of land the car went ovdr really is a rocky vertical cliff.

We're not really sure why they are not renewing his residency status. It has nothing to do with a work visa (he's been legally and very gainfully employed since he arrived from Ecuador 5 years ago). He has also been paying his fair share of taxes. He's considered one the best and most hardworking guys at his place of work.
He does not have any criminal record whatsoever. He's been so grateful for his chance to be here in the US that he gives back by volunteering. He goes to school and is VERY serious about improving his English. That all said, we've talked about what we would do if he was forced to go back. While we both wanted it ultimately to be up to us when we got married, we both made the decision that this is what we would do if ICE stepped in. It's something we've both been prepared for (but didn't really think it would happen, but it has).

You really need to see what the facts are and what the relationship is. Based on the situation presented, I am gathering that "they weren't going to renew his residency" means that a company was not going to extend a work visa? I am not clear on this.
Generally, if an entry into the U.S. was a legal one and there are no special circumstances (arrests, etc.), a marriage to an American citizen based on love will solve the issue of someone being out of legal status. DHS just not just "send people back." USCIS can deny a case if they believe the marriage was a fraud, if there was an illegal entry or something else happened. With that said, marriage is not something to take lightly. A conditional Green Card is issued in these situations which is only valid for 2 years. The couple must then reapply 2 years later for a 10 year card.

You won't get in "trouble" if you marry; however, they may still send him back if you marry him. Best of Luck. I know lots of people in the same situation.

$20K per unit for roof leaks? Your building is either being mismanaged or the roofer ripped you off big time. My building replaced the entire roof a few years ago and the total cost was $12K (total, not per unit) - and even then we thought the cost was kind of steep for the square footage involved. How big and what type of building do you live in? If you paid that much per unit to patch some leaks, I shudder to think what a roof replacement would've cost.

We are kind of in a bind here. My boyfriend is a legal resident but was told they weren't going to renew his residency. Our first thought was to run to city hall to get married but we don't want to get in trouble with immigration and make the situation worse. We're not really sure where to turn.
Also-- can anyone who's gone through this process offer any advice? It just kills me that they want to send back such a hard-working, honest and decent person with such a strong work ethic. This country could really use more people like him.

Usually the inspection is done sooner so that if there are problems you can either back out of the deal or negotiate with the owner for lower price or fix the problems. You shouldn't take this lightly. Also, with condos, you need to be aware of the condition of the whole building-especially the roof or you could face special assessments. Hopefully you've looked at the minutes from the board meetings and you know the building has a reserve fund etc... I don't mean to sound doom and gloomy but my former condo passed an assessment of $20,000.00 per unit (depending on size) for roof leaks.

Jersey City student is arrested for carrying gun to school
By Ken Thorbourne/The Jersey Journal March 11, 2010, 3:21PM Teen at CREATE Charter School in Jersey City was arrested with a loaded .32-caliber gun today. Above, school founder Steve Lipski speaks at last night's rally to keep school open. A 17-year-old student at CREATE Charter School in Jersey City was arrested at the school today at around noon with a loaded .32-caliber handgun and a large fight broke out afterward in the school cafeteria that resulted in the arrest of an 18-year-old, officials said. The arrest and fight comes the morning after the school held a rally with hundreds of students and parents to fight the state's order to close the school on June 30. In a March 1 letter, Acting Education Commissioner Bret Schundler notified the school it was being put out of business for several reasons, including poor reporting on school violence. Steve Lipski, the founder and chief administrator at the school, said this afternoon that the 17-year-old boy with the loaded weapon was arrested in the school cafeteria. The boy passed through a metal detector this morning, but the machine didn't sound off, Lipski said. It came to the attention of security guards at the school that the boy was carrying the weapon. The guards notified Jersey City police who arrived in "seconds" and the boy was arrested, Lipski said. But after the boy was arrested, an 18-year--old attacked one of the security guards and a large fight broke out in cafeteria, said Jersey City police spokesman Stan H. Eason. The 18-year-old, whose name was not immediately available, was arrested, Eason said. Lipski described the 17-year-old as a "quiet kid" and "average student." "Everybody was stunned," he said. "He's got detentions, but mostly for being late and out of uniform. He's never been in a fight." "There is an ongoing investigation to find out what really happened," he added. Staff held a meeting with students and Lipski said regular classes would resume tomorrow. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... arter_school_student.html

Quote:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crack_epidemic_(United_States) The crack epidemic is correlated with a sharp increase in crime, especially violent crime. Research by two prominent economists from the University of Chicago...suggest that crack was the most prominent factor contributing to the rise and fall of social ills in the African American and Latino communities between 1980 and 2000. Between 1984 and 1994, the homicide rate for black males aged 14 to 17 more than doubled, and the homicide rate for black males aged 18 to 24 increased nearly as much. During this period, the black community also experienced an increase in fetal death rates, low birth-weight babies, weapons arrests, and the number of children in foster care. The reasons for these increases in crime was due mostly to the fact that distribution for the drug occurred mainly in low-income inner city neighborhoods. This gave many inner city residents the opportunity to move up the "economic ladder" in a drug market that allowed dealers to charge a low minimum price. The basic reason for the rise of crack was economic. Evidently, crack cocaine use and distribution became popular in cities that were in social and economic chaos such as Los Angeles and Atlanta. 'As a result of the low-skill levels and minimal initial resource outlay required to sell crack, systemic violence flourished as a growing army of young, enthusiastic inner-city crack sellers attempt to defend their economic investment.' (Inciardi, 1994) Once the drug became embedded in the particular communities, the economic environment that was best suited for its survival caused further social disintegration within that city. An environment that was based on violence and deceit as an avenue for the crack dealers to protect their economic interests.

People don't like to be confused with facts....and, of course, the charter doesn't come with a ready-made school building either. Unless the school is part of a larger corporation that runs charters schools, each charter school has to pay for its building out of that very reduced operating budget. It's quite amazing that some charter schools actually succeed.
Oh, yes, another fact. Some charter school teachers are unionized.

Prosecutor's Office arrest Union City man, seize 115 grams of crack cocaine and $20,000 from his home By The Jersey Journal March 11, 2010, 9:20AM Victor Arias Lorenzo The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office seized 115 grams of crack cocaine and $20,000 in cash last Thursday when they arrested Victor Arias-Lorenzo, 33, of Union City, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio. After receiving tips from concerned citizens that Arias-Lorenzo was dealing cocaine, authorities began a month-long police surveillance before executing search warrants of his 12th Street home and 228 Hancock Ave. in Jersey City. DeFazio described the Jersey City location as a crack cocaine production facility and said 80 of it grams was seized there. When Arias-Lorenzo arrested, he had another 35 grams of crack cocaine and $1,300 on him, DeFazio said. "This guy, allegedly, was clearly a major distributor," DeFazio said. "At the street level, crack is sold in relatively small doses." Arias-Lorenzo was charged with maintaining or operating a controlled dangerous substance production facility, possession with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school and possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of public property. The most serious charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in a state prison.
