16-year-old Jersey City boy robbed of cell phone by two masked teens, police say

Saturday, March 13, 2010

A Jersey City boy was assaulted and robbed by two masked teenage boys near Lincoln High School around dismissal time Thursday, reports said.

The 16-year-old and a family member walked into the West District Police Station at 4:15 p.m. Thursday and told officers the boy was robbed 45 minutes earlier at Clinton and Madison avenues, reports said.

The victim told police he was grabbed from behind by one teen, who put him in a headlock, and that a second teen punched him in the stomach before taking his cell phone from his pants pocket, reports said.

The two robbers fled south on Madison toward Bramhall Avenue, reports said, adding that police searched the area with no luck.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-5245.

Charter Schools and No Child Left Behind

Below is a link to slate's review of Diane Ravitch's new book. Ravitch is one of the top education scholars in the country, and has been a leading proponent of reform.

She's put the brakes on that recently, however, because it appears that many of the reforms that have been advocated over the past couple of decades have had at best mixed results. Specifically she's talking about charter schools and the testing mandated by No Child Left behind.

Interesting reading for those of us who are concerned about the state of the Jersey City school system.

I usually plant the basil the first weekend in May. I agree with other posters about a sunny spot.

Regarding plants vs. seeds,... depends on your patience. I usually like seeds, because I can choose the exact variety. I've had the best pesto from the "Genoa" variety of basil - some seed companies consider it "heirloom" - whatever it is, it works!! Also, I find that buying seed costs less than buying plants. Either way, you can't go wrong.

Good Luck!!!

thrifty,

My sentiments exactly.
Jersey City is an old mobbed-up town and for almost a century all of the wherewithal that could have gone into making it a good place to live has instead gone into the pockets of the mob via crooked politicians.

Like Newark and Camden, that kind of structure takes a huge toll on any city, and it's as true today as it was in 1930, 1940 or 1950.

The only place you will find the wonderful city on a hill with it's crystal palaces is in phony real estate ads posing as "articles" like the one that started this post...and many, many, many others.

Oh no we're in trouble now. 2 lofts and one being in J.C. it may behoove not only Tyson but the rest of the city if he were to be a little more low key about his where-abouts. We had trouble with that 50 cents hoodlum and now this guy.

Mike Tyson reality series takes wing

New York post
By MICHAEL SHAIN
March 15, 2010

Iron Mike Tyson is getting ready to make his debut as a reality TV star.

Tyson, a life-long pigeon keeper, will star in a series about bird racing, The Post has learned.

"I may have stopped fighting," says the former heavyweight champ. "But I never stopped flying birds. It's my first love."

The show, to be called "Take on Tyson," pits Tyson and his birds against the best racing-pigeon owners in New York.

It is set to air on the cable channel Animal Planet sometime early next year.

The headline potential of turning the ferocious fighter into a reality TV star is not lost on Tyson himself, who has never been on a continuing series.

Resized Image
Mike Tyson can show off his life-long love affair with pigeons-- this photo was taken in 1985 -- in a new series, "Take on Tyson," set for early next year on Animal Planet. Tyson will race his birds vs. pros.

"I am a little worried about the sitcom effect," Tyson told The Post over the weekend.

"Mike Tyson and Animal Planet? They don't seem to go together, do they?"

Tyson served three years for rape in the mid-'90s and effectively ended his fight career two years later by biting Evander Holyfield during a bout. But he is now well on his way to remaking himself into a sensitive guy.

He cried on Oprah's show last year and starred in a stunningly candid documentary about his life, "Tyson" (which many in Hollywood believe was robbed of an Oscar nomination).

In a suprising role reversal, it is Holyfield who is in hot water these days (accusations of domestic violence, a ducked "Dr. Phil" appearance) and Tyson who is working for the channel that shows the Puppy Bowl.

The fighter says these days he owns "a few hundred birds" in two lofts, one in Brooklyn and another in Jersey City.
But he has never raced birds before.

"Taking on Tyson" begins shooting next month in Brooklyn, the network says.

For the show, Tyson turned his birds over to a cigar-smoking pigeon trainer, Vinnie Torre, who is getting them ready for the competition.

"Mike will be the underdog this time," says Marjorie Kaplan, the head of Animal Planet.

Tyson began with pigeons, he says, at age 10 or 11 in his Brownsville neighborhood, swiping milk crates for bigger kids who used them as coops for their birds.

"I cleaned cages," he says. "I was their go-fer."
In exchange, "I got the strays."

He kept his birds in a small coop attached to the windowsill of his apartment on Amboy Street for a while, he says, and later in a nearby abandoned building.

"I couldn't fly them off the roof," he explains. "Big kids would come and steal them."

And it was the birds that steered him to boxing, he says now.

"I never hurt anybody until somebody hurt one of my birds," Tyson says.

In the sport of pigeon racing, birds race distances up to 500 miles -- with thousands wagered on the outcome.

Like most reality shows, the drama won't be in who wins -- but among the hard-core Brooklyn characters who work in the rooftop world of competitive pigeon racing.

"We're just lucky to have Mike Tyson to show us around," says Kaplan.

Details are still sketchy, she says.
"We'll film and, when everyone gets back, we'll see what we have," says the network boss.

We are first time flood 'victims' - just came back from a wedding for the weekend and had a foot of water, but it was 3 feet (so we're thinking the sump pump gave out). Even the guy who came to get the water out was like, 'Jeez.... I need more equipment.' They are coming back first thing in the AM to take care of it. We're obviously pursuing the insurance claim route as everything is ruined.

Any advice from others on what we may want to do once it's all cleaned up - we know it's important to get dehumidifiers and such. This is our first house (just bought in Oct) and first water issue so any advice or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey JCListers --

My name is Sterling Waterman and I am running for the Jersey City Board of Education. The election is April 20.

I have a son in the 2nd grade at PS#16; there, I?m the president of the Concerned Parents Association and a member of the School Leadership Committee. I?m also the Founding Head of the Coalition of Parent Council Presidents along with many other qualifications. Bottom line: I work hard everyday to better my school and I will work just as hard for the betterment of all schools. I?m not part of the machine. I?m not out for financial or any other kind of gain, other than that for my son and all of the hardworking students and teachers of JC.

This is my first time on JCList but you don?t have to take it easy on me. Please ask any questions or voice any concerns you have and I?ll do my best to answer as many as possible.

Looking forward to the conversation.

Exclusive interview: Guy says goodbye - Catrillo speaks to Hudson Reporter

Exclusive interview: Guy says goodbye

First man to go to jail in corruption bust talks about sting, Dwek, and taking responsibility

by Ricardo Kaulessar
Reporter Staff Writer

When Guy Catrillo reports to Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution in southern New Jersey on Monday at noon, he will begin spending the next 18 months as inmate 30121-050.

The 55-year-old Catrillo, a former Jersey City planning aide and City Hall employee who ran for City Council last year, has been saying his farewells to family and friends as well as taking care of remaining business in his beloved hometown.

Last week, he spoke about the July sting operation that netted him and dozens of other officials. The downtown Jersey City native is the first of the officials and religious leaders in Operation Bid Rig to report to prison.

_____________

?Now the brakes are on.? ? Guy Catrillo
________

Catrillo pleaded guilty in September to accepting $15,000 cash in three payments from the federal government?s ?cooperating witness? Solomon Dwek, in exchange for helping Dwek to get approvals on his purported development project on Garfield Avenue in Jersey City.

In an exclusive interview with the Jersey City Reporter last week, Catrillo said that, in a way, he welcomes jail because it will give him time to compose a film music score for a Christmas play that he has written, and complete other songs he has wanted to write.

?This is giving me a chance to put on the brakes, because my life has been nonstop,? Catrillo said. ?Now the brakes are on.?

And Catrillo is singing anything but a sad song about the government?s treatment of him, calling it ?absolutely professional? even though he is now a convicted felon stripped of his right to vote and bear firearms. Catrillo surrendered his passport permanently, can?t hold another government job and most of all, can?t appeal the government?s case against him because he has pleaded guilty.

Catrillo says he has readied himself for prison by trying not to dwell too much on the unfortunate turn his life has taken. He also has been constantly monitored by federal agents, who checked on his physical and mental well-being. Last July, a Jersey City political consultant who was arrested, Jack Shaw, was found dead in his apartment five days later. The matter still has not been ruled either a suicide or accidental, but the coroner has reported valium in his system.

Catrillo is optimistic about his future beyond his incarceration, saying he has some jobs lined up upon release in a year and a half.

6 a.m. knock at door

Catrillo repeated during the interview, ?I don?t want to talk about the case,? but he did ?take responsibility? for his actions, citing his violation of the Hobbs Act ? a U.S. federal law that prohibits actual or attempted robbery or extortion affecting interstate or foreign commerce ? by accepting money from Dwek. Dwek wanted Catrillo use the money for Catrillo?s campaign.

?It was a fairly high price to pay for something like that,? Catrillo said.

Catrillo described the day of his arrest, when federal agents came to the door of his home at 6 a.m. Thinking they were there to tell him that his cousin had died due to his work as a fireman, Catrillo said the plainclothes agents entered his home very ?discreet.? He was not read his Miranda rights.

Catrillo admitted in the interview that he had in his house the bulk of the $15,000 that Dwek gave to him to hold, minus a couple thousand dollars he spent to help keep some friends from eviction.

Political reunion in jail

He was brought to Newark by federal authorities and placed in a jail cell awaiting his appearance in court. He looked around and saw many of the arrested public officials, including Jack Shaw, Jersey City Councilman Mariano Vega, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, and Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano.

?I?m looking at these people and thinking, they are so seasoned, how did they caught up in this?? Catrillo said. ?I know why I ended up here is because I was na?ve.?

In the next jail cell was a Jersey City employee who, unlike the other officials, didn?t keep a low profile, according to Catrillo. Catrillo says that the employee cursed out Dwek and other people whom he blamed for his downfall.

?I said ?Shut the f--- up, this place is being videotaped,? ? Catrillo said.

Catrillo also met some of the Jewish religious leaders arrested, including Rabbi Saul Kassin, the leading Syrian Sephardic Jewish cleric in the United States, who said a prayer for Catrillo. Some of the leaders had been implicated in a money laundering scheme and were charged, but they have not entered a plea.

Dwek, Chris Christie, and Healy

Catrillo was fairly diplomatic about some of the major players in the corruption scandal.

Gov. Christopher Christie was, until he resigned last year to run for governor, the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey overseeing the investigation. Ultimately, the arrests occurred during the gubernatorial campaign season, shining a poor light on Christie?s Democratic opponent, then-Gov. Jon Corzine.

Catrillo said he was a supporter of Christie for governor. Catrillo cited Democratic New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo possibly using his position to ?ruin? the careers of current New York Gov. David Patterson and former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, also both Democrats, but Catrillo did not elaborate further. Cuomo is currently considering a run for the New York governor?s seat.

As for Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy, who gained notoriety for meeting with Dwek twice but hasn?t been charged with a crime, Catrillo said he doesn?t think Healy is ?corrupt.? Several of those arrested said the money they collected was for Healy?s re-election campaign, but there are questions as to whether Healy knew of the terms of the donations.

On the subject of Dwek, whom Catrillo knew as ?David,? he recalled running into him when he was processed for prison and seeing him shake his head. Catrillo said he recalled how the rabbi Kassin described Dwek.

?I remembered Kassin saying that Dwek was ?an instrument of God sent to us for a reason, and we were not to be angry with him,? ? Catrillo said.

I'm sure you will have to have a copy signed by the judge with the docket number and county where it was adjudicated or disposed of. The judge's signature and stamp by the clerk is what makes it final. There is not another type of certification.

Not true.

You need a credit card to GUARANTEE a reservation at a hotel. In other words you need a credit card to "reserve" a room. But, you can always walk into a hotel and get a room on the spot and pay cash so long as a room is available. It's called a "walk in." If you do and choose not to use a credit card, you will need to pay a cash deposit in order to "post charges" to the room such as movies, internet, food etc. or for incidentals.

Thank you Webmaster! Excellence!

You see? I told you along time ago, you couldn't make this stuff up.

Expensive lawyers as advisors to manipulate the law.

Look carefully at who is selected to be on these boards.

I know of one board member who served on a city agency, at some given time, who was the wife of a council member, who no longer serves because he was voted out, and replaced with the one they said was "wet behind the ears".

Nepotism.

Shameful.

Even when the community IS mining the store, they continue with their shananigans!

Don't be fooled come next election. They'll throw turkeys at ya, feed you parades... and what not...

I don't have the exact name, but I've been using a produce store that is located near the corner of Tonnelle and Newark Avenue (the store is on Tonnelle). It's set back a bit from the street, across from Singh Pizza) in Little India.

Their fruit quality has been excellent in bulk - far better than what I've seen at BJ's or supermarkets.

Good luck!

A place in Jersey City would be 440 farms which is the cheapest of any where I have found and also fresher than Pathmark, Shoprite or A&P. It is on 440 across from the shopping center. They have tons of different fruits plus vegetables, also eggs and dairy plus nuts which is about all they sell and very busy place on Saturdays, they are only open a few hours on Sundays, the weekdays they are also open. They only sell fresh not frozen. In the spring they also have the best selection of plants for gardens whether vegetables many different ones even celery which used to be grown in Jersey City at one time, herbs or flowers and even some trees. They are always first to have things in the spring for planting before Lowes and definately before home depot.

Because of the location they are generally the least expensive of anyone else in the area.
