Its been a great few of years here in Jersey (5yrs) total but I will gladly be heading back home to Brooklyn in a few months. Sold my place and bought a larger place in Propsect Heights. Great neighborhood with a multitude of great restaurants, Prospect Park 9 blocks away (which has plenty of shade trees), beautiful brownstones for blocks and blocks that Downtown JC cant even hold a match to.
My taxes here in JC for an 850sf 1 bed, 1bath are almost 5K a year, (ridiculous), my new abated taxes in BK will be $17 per month for 25 years. NY does abatements the way abatements should be done, not this stupid ass payment in lieu taxes crap which are property taxes by another name. So HAPPY, will never, ever, ever return to NJ to live.

Of course you didnt like living in JC, you lived on Communipaw in Bergen Lafayette. Having moved from Brooklyn to JC, I must say I prefer the latter. There are nice parts of Brooklyn as well but I love downtown JC (I hate where you lived though:)) Re: taxes, NYC abatement is great, NYC income taxes not so much. Also, I paid roughly 15% less for my condo here than I would have for a comparable property in a nice neighborhood in Brooklyn . Also, your commute sucks from Prospect Heights , but I guess it probably did from Communipaw. Good luck and good riddance!

No doubt millions of dollars in contracts awarded with all that entails in this city.

Is there even ONE SINGLE person who thinks this is a good use of scarce funds or that it will improve the quality of life here?

You're connecting dots that aren't there. This is not about safety due to crime, this is about cyclists coming together for a festive ride. Think less "Critical Mass" and more "5boro tour" in NYC. Same concept.

Best documentary ever about JC - The follow up should be "Lost and Found" - matching dog poo left on the ground to the dog and owner.

you can go at your own pace and there will be a police escort, so don't be discouraged.

Spread the news and join the ride... it's Chilltown's version of the 5 boro tour!

I hope someone is hurt, but only if the vehicle ran a red light or failed to stop. Light Rail accidents should never occur unless someone is being impatient and simply stupid.

That's two in the last 48 hours.

I've waited for the light rail to pass on several occasions and a car from behind me swerved and zipped past me and through the red light.

I hope that no one is hurt.

This looks pretty bad - Light rail was stopped in both directions. They may have started it back up, but this was the scene about 15mins ago...

Not that I approve, but a loan guarantee isn't exactly a cash giveaway.

Under normal circumstances, I'd agree. Have you looked at this deal? The city has a second lien position on dollars $21,000,001 to $29 million (roughly) on a property that is appraised at $27.5 million "under normal market conditions." The appraisal goes on to say that given current economic and market conditions, which it expects to last at least another three years, the best course of action would be to delay development as the developer could never realize the appraised value given the market.

I'll bet you a fish taco that the city eats a significant amount of this guarantee, if not all of it.

Maybe he let something slip and he's actually a superhero who can put out fires with his icy gaze. Re: Did the Census leave out part of Jersey City?
Home away from home
Home away from home

The Census is a multiple-phase affair. The first phase that involves the citizenry is the mailing of Census forms to every US household. Of course, many households are missed, as already documented in this thread. The next phase, which starts tomorrow (May 1st) is the mobilization of a large "brigade" of paid census takers that will visit households that failed to return their Census form. Later on, some of the census takers will be tasked with visiting certain households (randomly selected by the Census Bureau) to verify the data submitted via the Census form. As I understand it, some census takers are also tasked with canvassing entire neighborhoods to look for households that may have been missed during the initial phase of the Census.

Re: Statewide Granite on Kennedy Blvd.

I used Statewide for a small kitchen in studio apartment and took advantage of their free granite remnant deal (free material, but you pay for the labor of course). My job was 3 approximately 2' wide pieces with eased edges and a 4" backsplash running over a farmhouse sink and around a corner. It was $665, which works out to $45 a square foot. Regular pricing would have been over $100/ft, as I was able to get a remnant of one of the more expensive granites. The workmanship was excellent. Highly recommended.

What gets me the most is that Vega admitted that he used the car for personal reasons, and so he blatantly used the car against the conditions he was allowed to have it, and doesn't even get a slap on the wrist. Even if it's a verbal reprimand at a council meeting with no consequences, he should be publicly held accountable by having it on his record. Even though he's about to have a record of a much bigger offense.

As a person who lost relatives in the holocaust, I would feel the same way if someone put up a statue of a prisoner in a concentration camp being bayonetted in the back. There are plenty of ways to memorialize that event in history without an ugly statue. In fact, why not use this as a catalyst to start a museum for this similar to the various holocaust museums around the world? -1 out of place statue, +1 museum.... creates jobs, cultural interest, etc.

What is next, holocaust memorials?

I'd tell them that they deserve a better memorial than that lone, ugly statue.

What a mess this thread is.
Some say the "hipsters" want to keep it and some say it's the old school JCers that want it. Same thing for getting rid of it. Aside from that, I think someone else is using "hipster" and "yuppie" interchangeably.

In any event. I didn't know about the Katyn massacre until I first saw the statue. The obvious curiousity of the piece made me take notice and learn about the tragedy. The monument has served its purpose.
For those keeping score, I like it.

The guy on my block told me they put the loudest truck here because it's by abandoned factories, not a neighborhood! Huh?

Is the company or the city required to send notices out the residents, that the noise will be constant for the next two weeks for 8-9 hours a day?

The guy also told me that this is the first times the last time the mains were cleaned were fifty years ago!

Following N.J.'s ill-spent school funds

By Steven Rea
Inquirer Movie Columnist and Critic
Posted on Fri, Apr. 30, 2010

If Bob Bowdon's documentary The Cartel is to be believed - and the news anchor-turned-Internet marketeer makes a strong case - New Jersey's public school system is, indeed, about learning your ABCs.

Except that the A stands for avarice, B for bureaucracy, C for corruption.

An alarming portrait of a state that pours more money per pupil into its public school system than any of the other 49 and yet continues to turn out underperforming students with substandard educations, The Cartel does what good reporters are supposed to do: follow the money. It also tallies up the fleet of Mercedeses, Infinitis, and other luxury vehicles parked outside the Jersey City Board of Education. There are plenty.

What the film reveals is that New Jersey's 611 (yes, 611!) school districts are larded with highly paid administrators and support personnel. Literally billions of dollars have gone missing - in construction funds, and in payouts to ghost organizations and phantom employees. And thanks to a teachers' union that seems more interested in protecting its members' jobs than in raising the level of work they do, it's virtually impossible for a teacher in a New Jersey public school to be fired, no matter how egregiously bad, or even abusive, he or she might be.

Bowdon interviews administrators and union officials to get their responses, but the responses seem pretty weak.

The Cartel (a title that doesn't serve the film well) lays out its facts clearly, and Bowdon - while no Michael Moore (and maybe that's a good thing) - asks the right questions. New Jersey taxpayers, and the state's political leaders, need to see this documentary. And then they need to do something besides throw more money at an embarrassing, and startling, problem.

the over-the-top gruesomeness of this statue is sort of why I like it. say what you will, it definitely gets your attention.

but that's why I think it defeats the purpose of honoring the Katyn dead. it's almost too macabre to inspire thoughtful discussion.

as a landmark, you could do worse than "meet me at the statue of the guy with the bayonet sticking out of his back. no, seriously. it's a huge bayonet, sticking right through him. you'll know it when you see it."
