I am sure it is in the same reasoning, however trash pickup from what I have seen is usually not that late. Maybe from 10-12? But even then it's moving noise as opposed to stationary noise.

Anyone who thinks that the teaching day is 8:20 - 3 knows nothing about teaching. Putting aside any after school activities, there's lesson planning, test preparation, paper grading -- for starters. Some teachers may actually leave the building by 3:30 but the work day doesn't end at the building doors.

Karen,

daughter of teacher/principal
grandaughter of teachers
niece of teacher
daughter in law of teachers
sister of teacher
aunt of teacher

I avoided the "family business" because they all work too hard.

I live a few apts down from White Star and it's by far the best bar/bar food in the area. I was talking with one of the bar tenders last night and they did just get approval for outdoor seating. For those who live nearby and are concerned about noise, my neighbor informed me that outdoor seating will only be available until 9:30pm.

As a regular who's been going to White Star since before Matt owned the place, I have to offer some counterpoint to a few of the recent posts.

White Star is - by far - the friendliest and most consistent local spot in all of downtown. Any place can have a bad night, but if you bring a problem/issue/suggestion to Matt's attention, it will be addressed.

Where else can a youngish crowd find such fairly priced food; a fight-free environment; no drug sales; great buy-backs; bartenders that don't change every other week, and an owner that is on-site and gives a damn every single day?

The owner is great and the staff are friendly and attentive. It's a great neighborhood bar/restaurant. Love it !

Good one, got anymore? Read the whole post before responding. How would you like it if they decided to run a large generator by your house and starting cleaning the streets suddenly because there are less people in the street. Captain obvious, it makes sense to clean late at night. But so is repaving a street. But you know what that is usually done during the middle of the day. Bah, never mind... No point in replying to non constructive replies. Thanks for your help bro.

Yeah, I am def going down there tonight if it happens again. I really don't want this to become a regularly scheduled maintenance. I will def mention it during our next board meeting.

I might get slammed by other posters on this one, but I've probably only used a bus once or twice since I've been living in the heights. The second i walk onto the corner, there's a jitney passing by to take me to journal square or port authority. They're cheaper and much faster, though I know some people worry about their safety. Either way, congratuations!

Teachers teaching for 10 years deserve raises? How about the ones who cant teach or dont care about the kids or whose students are failing? Is there any difference to the teachers union between a good teacher and a failure? When was the last time a failing teacher was fired?

Automatic raises for all old teachers who live outside Jersey City, NJ and are incompetent.

In the real world you must earn a raise by excellent performance, in the teachers world you can produce dummies and be rewarded.

A mind is terrible thing to waste.

EACH AND EVERY TEACHER IN THE DISTRICT IS NOT RECEIVING AN INCREASE IN PAY - ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE DEDICATED THEMSELVES TO THE CHILDREN OF THIS CITY FOR TEN OR MORE YEARS. And if you think they don't deserve it, spend a week in the classroom with them before you pass judgment.

You could call the mayors hotline. There may be a noise ordinance after a certain time, and you may be able to put in an official complaint, as well as call the police non-emergency number if indeed there is an ordinance. If you really want to get serious you could get other neighbors whom it bothers and do something as a group.

But in all honesty (such a lonely word) they probably do it night because of less trains/crowds so nothing will probably come from it, but you never know till you give it a shot.

Sound proof windows may not be a bad idea. A little expense for a little peace could be worth it.

Actually no, that was what I was looking for. What is the phone number for PATH customer service. The bigger one I was looking for was the phone number for the non-emergency police number so at least I can log a complaint.

As I've said in the other replies this is something new, and I am seriously trying to prevent this from being a normally scheduled thing. And if it just happens to be a one time thing, then just consider this a quick rant. I know in the past they were doing it at around 9-10p. But we'll see...

I totally understand what you mean. I'm not one of those people who bought in a city but expected country quietness. It's just the sudden surprise of such noise. This isn't Hard Grove Cafe noise, this was much much worse. Like I've said I have been here for years, this was seriously out of the ordinary and I am hoping this is not going to be something new. That is why I am looking for some suggestions.

I've actually lived in Grove Pointe for the last 3 years. I can usually sleep through anything. The noise yesterday just happened to be unbearable. I mean this sucker was a generator, just imagine a neighbor starting up their tractor or some large truck and it's just running all night. I mean it felt as if the walls were rumbling. I knew when I bought the condo that it would be noisy as it is located in a busy street. And you're right cabs honking is pretty expected. I have actually gotten used to this. However, what happened last night was just something unexpected. Imagine; no matter where you lived if suddenly they decided to rip up the road by your house with a jackhammer and had trucks repaving etc, etc in the middle of the night. I am pretty sure you wouldn't be a happy camper. There is nothing wrong with doing maintenance, it's just the time of day which surprised me.

Republicans Christie and Schundler love to make teachers the whipping boys. At the end of the day Christie, with his Bush/Rove agenda, seeks to limit the income of middle class policemen, firemen and teachers to enrich his wealthy Republican friends.

You have to consider how many hours their workday consist of. Teachers for instance have the summer off and go home at 3pm. Lot of perks at the taxpayer's expense.

couldn't agree more. however, does the Christie/Schundler Race to the Top application and related plan address this objective?

while I certainly would like to see the union's political influence reduced (like any other special interest group that throws large sums of money around), the target should be a holistic and strategic approach to improving education for all while making the process top to bottom more cost efficient. I fear individual political agendas will leave all of us dependent on successfully achieving the target worse off.
