Re: 3rd Quarter Property Tax Bills - question
Home away from home
Home away from home

When we got reassessed, the tax office claimed it was because the previous owner had pulled a permit for some work. Nothing big; new floors put over the old ones. No addition, no big renovation. So we were really surprised when we got reassessed two years after that permit was issued..

It is clear that the Mediterranean menu choices are the strength of their menu. We've gone back a few times and tried other things, but I've gotta say that their grill dishes are consistently very good.

We had an awesome meal last night; we ordered the mixed grill and the chicken kabob. I have to request a special order: no onions. This isn't easy because the chicken kabob dish has a lot of onions on it (the kabob, the side salad, the onion bowl). They went above and beyond to make my order. I was very, very pleased!

There was a municipal truck out this morning on 5th and Jersey. They where opening up the sewer drains and dredging them; scooping out piles of muck. They were heading south on Jersey Avenue after that.

+1 for Willmar. They did a very small job for me, but were very nice, on time, and at a good price.

We've been there a few times. We've enjoyed it, although they're still working out their kinks. All meals have been decent, at a good price. I was disappointed with their pizza, though... pretty bland, but it seems to be a hit with kids. Nice sized salads. Their desserts are a stand-out, though. Although not on the menu, they do offer a tasting sampler of the four desserts, which is a good way to try them all.

I routinly see adults with their kids in tow throw trash right to ground as they casually walk down the street.

Sometimes I just smile sweetly and say, "Oops! You dropped something!". They usually pick it up and and mumble "oh, thanks".

One day I saw a man, nicely dressed in a suit, take the plastic top off of his coffee and toss it on the ground. I was so mad, I walked up to him and said, "What do you think you're doing!?!?!" Even though he apologized and picked it up, that was probably not a very smart thing for me to do. You never know how those litterers will react.

Our hearing has not been scheduled yet. Our appraiser will go to the hearing, but he said that the city may call us to negotiate beforehand.

Sorry, I'm not much help yet.

I've used the online help center; it's hit-or-miss. You can also call the Action Helpline Tel: (201) 547-4900/5555. I have had good luck here.

We stopped in on Sunday and saw the awesome pig. We had them pack a pound of it for us and we brought it home and ate it. Very good, nice skin cracklings. We're excited to have them so close. My SO had a long chat with the owner and the grill master. They are very nice and the grill that reminds me of the large ones we've seen in Argentine. I can't wait to try everything on the menu. I think this place is going to be very popular!

I DO NOT recommend using All Boro Refinishing. I had them do my tub a year ago for $695. After they left, we could see drips inside the tub. They did come back and fix that promptly. After a few months, quarter-size bubbles developed on the outside of the tub. Their warranty claims that they warranty their work to a MAX of ONE VISIT. They claimed that the first time they returned to fix their own drips was the first visit and i had to pay an additional $95 to have them come out again. Worse than that was his (Charlie's) attitude.

After I posted a bad review on them, he contacted me and said he would come fix the tub now, only if I remove my review.

So now I have a polka-dot tub :)

Jersey City to Lay Off Nearly 300 Employees

"seasonal and provisional employees"? I'm not really sure what that means. They're going to lay off the person who puts up the holiday decorations? The person who mows the lawn for the baseball fields in the summer? This sounds like a phony token gesture.

Gaughan once said when a resident mentioned they sent him an email, that he did not use email and email was for yuppies.
Not sure Brennan is sharp enough to use email either.
Lopez might be able to use email, but most likely would need a manual of instructions, sort of like the manual she used during the campaign debates, reading line for line from it never looking at the people in audience.

Not surprisingly, the only response I received so far was from Fulop (and within an hour) and I only cc'd him on the letter to the mayor. I cc'd all their aides, too, assuming the aides are the ones who may actually sort through the emails...

Sushi Tango? seriously? I guess I'll have to try it. I always went to Komogashi; a couple of times to Honshu. Grand Banks seriously blows, though. I cannot believe they still exist.

Spread the word..Keep packing City Hall Chambers for the City Council meetings.

When the weather gets warm, lets get Thousands of people to march and protest on city hall.

When anybody sees a Team Healy member in public, scream at them, call them a disgrace, call them a piece of shit, or whatever you want to call them, make them so miserable, that they will want to run and hide and wish they never had the job, perhaps to the point of resigning.
...

I'm in, although you won't find me screaming at people in the streets.

I cannot make it to the meeting on the 10th, but I will be there on the 24th.

I see that I've been added to some GoogleGroup; I assume that the person collecting email addresses and info started it but there has been no activity on it yet.

Is there someone organizing?

Re: Best pizza in JC????

I get pizza from La Rustique all the time and love it, but this past weekend we got a Buffalo Chicken pizza and it was terrible! There was too much sauce; we couldn't pick up the slices, but the crust was burned black on the edges. The cheese wasn't in the usual slices, it was shredded and they were very skimpy with it. and skimpy with the chicken. The regular pizza man didn't seem to be in... :( Maybe just an off day.

Just talked to my mortgage bank this morning, and my escrow account is down to like $20 after the first quarter's estimated tax is paid. I asked them to immediately do a new escrow analysis factoring this latest tax bill. My montly outlay is almost $300 more this year because I'm already paying extra for the shortfall from last year's 11% hike. Is anyone else running into escrow problems from this? Any ideas on how best to handle this? The woman at my bank's escrow department was very nice and she said acute escrow shortages were particularly commonplace in NJ.

Thanks for the info. I just took a look and my escrow is now in the negatives and I am paying $600 per month more to make up for the shortage. Unfortunately, I thought that included the new tax increase, but it seems to be just to make up for last year, like you found. Holy sh*t.

The cans have not been replaced still. I saw a 'responsible' dog owner pick up after their dog the other day and dispose of the bag in the sewer on Jersey and Fifth!

Please bring back the trash cans!

Thanks for all the good information. This discussion helps a lot.

But...I'm still confused. I purchased an old row home, but my taxes just went up more than 2X in the last year!

Also, we are zoned as a 2 family home, but we are using it as a one-family. Does anyone know how that designation affects the taxes and what it will take to make it a one-family again?

We have had some custom framing done there. Excellent, excellent work, but not inexpensive. We worked with the owner who spent a lot of time with us, offering very good suggestions. We were framing some original art, so it was worth it.

Smith and Chang: I went in this weekend. They have housewares, vintage and new stuff. They didn't have everything priced yet and they said more stuff was coming in soon. They have some nice things. The furniture is also for sale (except the dining tables that I wanted). It could be a good place for gifts, too.

The housewares place on Montgomery/Grove didn't do so well. I hope these guys do better.

It depends. You should try to negotiate with them. I've paid ~$40 at around midnight (no traffic). If it's during a higher traffic period, I've had quotes of $70 and I've even had them refuse. I don't think I've ever paid less than $40.
