Re: Downtown: Williamsburg's Barcade (Bar Arcade) Coming to Newark Avenue

Home away from home

I wonder where this is going to go on Newark Ave. The only place I can think of is possibly Milano Furnature which is going out of business. That's a large space in an ideal location.

Unless its going to take over a 99 cent store.

Any thoughts? Also, where are they going to get their liquor license from? I was at a City Council meeting a while back where they changed the ordinance on how close places could be and they said all licenses were issued.

Hmmmm so either someone is closing or getting bought out.

This is FREAKING insane. Where is the 2011 budget?

And why must they wait for a plan till September?

Start the layoff NOW. Cut spending NOW.

And when the heck is Vega going to trial? It's been almost a year and this criminal is allowed to vote for more taxes.

WTF

Not happy.

Wow... what happened to the "national search"?

This guy gets paid way too much... and what do we have... one or two OK schools (McNair for example), but a lot of failing schools.

Test scores are bad and graduation rates are poor. Why would they extend the contract? Where are the performance measures?

Also, the JC public school system is bloated with administrators. Why?

I don't even have kids, but as a tax payer, I DON'T THINK OUR SCHOOLS ARE RUN WELL AT ALL!

Re: Hamilton Park Renovation - Update
Home away from home
Home away from home

Finally got to visit the park today. Got an overpriced sandwich at Christos on 9th and Coles then sat by the Gazebo and had lunch.

They really did a nice job. While having my sandwich, I was admiring the new walkways. Very nice detail. I like all the patterns going on.

After finishing my sandwich, I then placed the refuse in the garbage. Also picked up a few pieces of litter that I saw and put in the garbage.

One observation - the trash cans are overflowing!!! JCIA get on this immediately. Based on use, I think they should be emptied daily. I also think there might need to be more trash cans.

The kids seem to LOVE the new playground. I wish I were a kid again.

Is the fountain eventually going to have water flowing down, or is it for decorative purposes only? Would be nice if it worked and was on.

Overall Kudos to all. Nice job. Glad it is open once again.

Gosh only 10K? Networks are getting cheap theses days.

10K won't get you much of a paint job, let alone a new kitchen or other REAL renovation.

I have a better idea. Instead of waiting for trash to be picked up, make the kids who use the basketball court pick up the trash.

Then after the area is clean, they can use the court again. Twice a day.

In fact, similar to the playground, lets put gates around the bb court. And lock it when it becomes a disaster of a mess. Then, when a group of community concerned basketball players comes together and comes forward to pick up the garbage... then they can play again.

Also, get rid of the bleachers. Maybe if folks are standing they will take their trash to a trashcan. Just maybe.

I have a better idea... make turnstiles.

Enforcement of the fare is a farce. And these kids hop on and off all the time without buying tickets.

Instead of having this system where you buy a ticket and then stamp to validate, and get on...

have a system where you buy a ticket and have to go through a gate before getting on. This way there is NO FREE RIDE.

All these politicians are getting BIG BUCKS from the telcom industry.

So of course they would sign the letter.

They no longer care about the consumer, the individual, the citizens of their district and their community.

WHICH IS WHY WE SHOULD BOOT ALL INCUMBENTS AND DEMAND TERM LIMITS.

They are supposed to be representing THE PEOPLE, but have become beholden to the corporation - who outsources their jobs overseas anyway.

That is wrong.

Is that what was going on last night Sat (early Sunday morning).

I was woken up on a couple of occasions with sirens on either ambulances / police cars.

And then at 3:30 am or so, a low flying helicopter which sounded like the Port Authority's big chopper that flies around on occasion.

Is it me or does violent crime seem to be picking up in Jersey City. Now that the police have their wonderful raises, I am hoping that I see fewer headlines in the Jersey Journal. Seems like the wild west lately here.

Re: For Graffiti Artists in Jersey City -- Texting Replaces Tagging
Home away from home

Hi All.

Does anybody know who "The Professor" is?

This "Jerk Off" has been running around downtown recently tagging everything in site.

They even tagged my building which I am not happy about as a home owner.

Their mark is a big X in sky blue. Is sky blue a gang color?

You can see more of their handy-work on our brand new planters along Newark ave from Jersey Ave to Grove Street.

Hello Jersey City govt. Get these taggers.

Police. Start patrolling. Get out of the cars and get on foot. Bring back the bicycles.

And every cop should be on duty from 2:30 - 5:30 when all these kids are running about in packs.

JCIA... get on the ball and remove all these tags downtown. We don't want to see another 1970s here.

Thank you.

Any chance we can have the pilots and abated properties included in this "REVAL".

How will all these luxury condos on the waterfront affect this and will THEY have to pay more too?

Not thrilled with this, but at least the neighbor who has a bigger place than mine, and pays half the taxes I do will now get to pay their fair share.

But the fact of the matter is the city has not done enough to cut costs and is doing this REVAL to just grab/steal more money.

Re: Trees along Christopher Columbus drive
Home away from home
Home away from home

Quoting and replying on this thing still makes no sense, and I can never get it to work right.

I like trees. But I HATE THE EMBANKMENT (the structure, not the restaurant... I don't want to get banned).

I don't like graffiti and this thing is a magnet for graffiti. It should be leveled for development of housing that is appropriate for a historical neighborhood. The ones that want to keep it are on 5th Street and just want their free parking ensured.

It's ugly and an eyesore. The HIGH LINE like New York - it will never be. And I don't want my property taxes raised any more thank you very much.

And a 5 lane highway downtown that is impossible to cross as it is... is bad news as well. Leave the trees, just repave it as is.

I like trees. Just did a bunch of plantings in my backyard today in fact.. But the embankment just needs to go. Nothing historic about it period, and its a public danger as pieces keep falling off.

Cash payouts from the construction company? Make the project easier and we'll donate to your next campaign.

And here is a brown envelope with a surprise in it.

That is why we get these bizarre public projects that sometimes don't serve the Jersey City public interest.

Re: Fulop/McCann and On a Document That Disappeared, Then Reappeared

Having read these posts, honestly this really seems to smack of sour grapes on McCann's part.

Probably because of the school board election that just took place. Fulop found candidates that he liked and he supported them.

And they won.

So now, folks from the machine art targeting Fulop, especially as he is a likely next contender for Mayor and has very strong support and is "like-able" and gets things done.

I'm sure this will go away as quick as it appeared. No one believes it. In fact, didn't Healy use the same tricks? Paying off homeless to vote "often and in different places"?

Gotta love Jersey City.

Re: Trees along Christopher Columbus drive

Why can't they just leave the vaults and trees "as is" and work around them. It seems the answer to all of today's problems is tear it up and start new.

I think simply repaving the road would suffice as that is the main complaint I read over and over again. Why does there need to be a "street-scape" nothing on CC to benefit that much anyway.

I think the "street-scaping" of Newark was a bit over-hyped and miss the big trees that were taken down and replaced with "bushes" like another commenter mentioned.

Re: Maybe there should be sales or renter's tax in JC
Home away from home
Home away from home

What sort of bothers me is that while Renters who live in Jersey City can vote in Jersey City, they can also directly vote for all sorts of spending measures like the 100+million tax levy for schools this past Tuesday. Yet, renters don't have to pay for that tax levy and that bothers me as a homeowner.

So renter's will just vote YES all the time screwing over property owners.

One idea I have is that if you aren't a tax-paying property owner, but are sending kids to a JC public school, there should be some sort of additional fee/tax imposed in order to lessen the tax burden on property owners.

I would be interested to see of all of those who voted YES in Tuesdays School tax levy, how many are renters versus property owners. I have a hunch based on all the property tax increases lately, property owners probably said NO.

Re: Hamilton Park Renovation - Update
Home away from home
Home away from home

Walked by this past weekend and saw the new basketball hoops that have been put up.

Does anyone find it odd that they are made of glass? I don't expect those glass back boards to stay for long. All we need are a few people dunking balls and then hanging on the hoops.

SMASH...broken glass all over the place. (good way to close the basketball court though).

Another thing I noticed, apparently the remainder of the lamp posts have been put in. However, now the little medallions have JC on them. So I guess they really did buy leftovers from Hoboken's sidewalk project. Otherwise why the sudden change to JC. Is it possible to get new medallions so that all the lamps can be JC? It looks strange.

Also, I guess gravel isn't good enough for the kids play area? Looks like they are going to be putting something else there. Rubber shavings?

But it looks like its just about done. I hope they can put some folks on overtime to get it done quicker than June.

FG.

P.S. Don't forget to paint the entrances to the park and the fence too.

Had lunch here on Easter Sunday.

Still working out the kinks but I think it will succeed and I will be back.

Had the Chicken BLT sandwich. It was good and tasty. Came with fries, but there could have been a little more fries. Would like to see a few more sandwich options.

Service was ok. I don't like to be bothered that much. I liked how they redecorated as well. Definitely going for upscale.

Will be back.

I stopped by and had dinner there this past Saturday evening.

Really liked how they fixed the place up and the atmosphere for dinner was really nice. Not too formal.

I ordered the mozzarella sticks for an appetizer. They came out perfect. Hot and crispy with the cheese melted on the inside.

I then had the skirt steak for the entree and it was done exactly as I ordered. Medium, but slightly pink.

And I thought the prices were very reasonable. I will definitely be back. Nice to have a new restaurant option in the neighborhood.

I got my census form two weeks ago. Filled it out the day after and returned it. It was in a big 9x12 over-sized envelope.

Now today, April 1, I just got ANOTHER census form in the mail.

So will I now be counted twice? Should I fill out and return the second form as well?

It hat lovely "YOUR RESONSE IS REQUIRED BY LAW" in big bold letters. But I already responded two weeks ago.

You'd think after hundreds of years as a republic, doing this every ten years, there would finally be a system in place that works.

I smell SNAFU.

Anybody know what is up with Hamilton Park? We've had like 4 wonderful days in a row with 70+ degree weather.

Yet I walked by this afternoon (Sat) and Nothing has been touched since I walked by there in Feb.

Let's get this done... SPRING IS HERE. Get it open before Easter or at least before the 1 year mark.

Contractor.... get all your hired help out and finish the job!!!

Put in the sod, and don't forget to paint the entrances either.

Re: Jersey City Board of Ed fails to pass teachers contract

Home away from home

Personally, I am glad that this didn't pass.

To get anywhere from a 4.3 to 4.7 % raise is just obnoxious while we're still very much in the Great Recession and so many in the private sector (myself included) have lost our jobs outright.

Giving themselves these generous raises does nothing to help the kids. NJ teachers are already the highest paid in the nation.

Finally, I think there is a LOT of waste in our public schools and a lot of teachers who have their jobs because of that thing called tenure. I'm sick of being taxed to hell for it - and I don't even have kids.

Tenure needs to go. In the 70's when I was in elementary school there were between 30-40 kids in my class with just one teacher. I'm not buying that we have to have a lower student / teacher ratio for kids to succeed.

It was a long meeting. I left after the public speaking section around 10:45ish.

It just amazes me these guys. I love in the video you see the guy sleeping. I was told this is our deputy mayor. Simply amazing. If I were caught sleeping on the job I'd be severely reprimanded.

Please all, stay mad at this.... this incompetency cannot be ignored.

Electrician Reccomendation to install new intercom / buzzer system
Home away from home

Hello JC Listers.

Can anybody recommend a good electrician who can install a door intercom / buzzer system.

My condo building is an 8 unit building. The system we had stopped working and needs to be replaced.

I know there are these new phone systems, but I don't want the condo association to have to get a phone line with local and long distance being up to 40 bucks a month.

Thanks.

All the same...

The events in Haiti and now in Chile are a good reason to review your own family's emergency preparedness.

I would suggest going to www.ready.gov.

The redcross also has tips for emergencies.

The key is to "have a plan" and a rendezvous point and contact list.

Also, a "Go Bag" is essential. First aid kit, whistle, water, some dry food, radio, etc.

Anyway. It's up to you. But remember, not all disasters are earthquakes. FYI most of downtown JC is in a flood zone.

Re: Newark Avenue StreetScape
Home away from home
Home away from home

Before any work takes place, they need to finish the job on the first phase.

First off, and a BIG PRIORITY is the driveway in between OX and Palace Drugs that goes to the parking lot. It needs to be turned into concrete ASAP. I am personally sick of walking though this nasty gravel pit. Especially as it turns into mud when it rains like today. Looks like hell and the gravel is spilling all over the rest of the sidewalks

There are still sections of cement that were marked with white X's because they were cracked. These need to be replaced.

Also, I would like to see all the survey markings removed. Someone went a little crazy with the spray paint and it looks crappy.

Half the new lights don't seem to work. Also, the old bases need to be removed. As they are disconnected, I don't think PSE&G is needed for that.

Where are the crosswalks? Yes you did Jersey Ave and Newark, but not completely. The Red Brick is supposed to be edged with White. (See similar brick walks by Hamilton Park 8th and Jersey and on 3rd and Erie I believe). Other crosswalks need to added all along Newark ave.

Finally, the little park on the corner there needs some better landscaping.

That's it for me.
