Depends on when you go. they can take a long time sometimes and are generally clueless imo.
Sears is good but they are trained to sell you new tires, but if you get a new tire they will fix flats if you get the warranty.

Cops do well on their salaries, at least $50,000 after a few years plus bennies. And let's not forget the off-duty jobs where they stand around doing nada & can double their salary. If we tell them where the crime is should'nt we get paid instead of them? I think so.
And by the way where's the bikes? Those who know will understand.

I know it's crazy I haven't been to a VVPA meeting in 3 years and I feel like they're using the same script over and over. And I haven't seen any of the bike patrol guys all summer. They said he (singular) has been bike around the projects more, that's why we haven't seen him.
back to the pay thing: it's a dangerous profession, so I think they should be paid well.

They said there were a lot of retirements a few years ago and the standards are harder now. Per class of 25 only 16 get through. I'm guessing it's not that attractive to become a cop in JC either. I looked into about 10 years ago and was totally turned off by the pay. I'm just saying, maybe if we paid them more, it would attract more candidates. Same with teachers and fire...

How long were you there? I thought it was a rather large group of about 30 or so. The Chief said the group that was at the school was the largest he's seen since he took over. I'd say about 40 or more people came, but I didn't count.
It was the usual bitch session about how they need our help to report problems and to not assume they know if there is drug activity. They suggested for drug activity we should call the Narcotics cops directly instead of the 5477 number. They kept saying they have resources problem (aka cop shortage) and need the community's help. Something that totally shocked me is they only have 885 cops to police the whole city of 250,000!

Jersey City, NJ 07302

Attention VVPA Membership, Friends and Neighbors :

On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 15th, there was a shooting on Wayne Street between Jersey Avenue and Barrow Street. This block is home to St Matthew's Church, the Barrow Mansion, a playground as well as both single and multi-family residences . It is a block notorious for criminal and drug-related activity. This shooting happened at 3pm.

The police are aware of the problems with this block and have managed problems as they've arisen in the past. There are plans in discussion to improve the safety of the block including installing security cameras, increasing the height of the fences around the playground and locking the playground at night. As of yet, none of these strategies has been put into place.

Any shooting, especially those happening midday along a well-traveled street, should not go unrecognized. East District Captain Gallagher will be holding his monthly Captain's Meeting at PS 4 on Bright Street at 7pm this Tuesday, September 22. There will be a group gathering first in front of the playground on Wayne Street on Tuesday evening at 6:30pm. At 6:45pm, the group will then walk to the Captain's Meeting in a show of solidarity against this senseless and dangerous street violence.

You are encouraged to attend.

Thank you.
The VVPA

Hi Everyone,

Why is party affiliation so important to people anyway? People should vote with whoever is the most clean and effective on a local level, regardless of affiliation.

While funny in theory, you have careful with drug dealers. If they think you had something to do with them getting arrested they will retailiate. I've had my tires slashed several times, so I've learned to keep a low profile with my spying.

I think a lot of the people who hang out in that park are law abiding and have been in the neighborhood for many years. Some of the people who have lived here a long time are decent people once you get to know them. They're just a bit rough around the edges. But if you get to know your neighbors who hang out in the park you can quickly ascertain who the bad elements are. So please let's be careful about lumping an entire group of people together.

The fact is we all need to be more proactive as a community. I have a view of that park from my apartment and I admit I've become complacent lately, not paying as much attention. If you see drug activity, very discreetly gather information throughout the course of your normal daily routines. Write down license plate numbers and try to remember what people look like. Pretend you are texting and take camera phone pictures. But make sure for your own safety they don?t know you are paying attention to them. And always walk down that street with a buddy.

One other thing: I think the individual police officers are great, we need more of them. But there is an major issue with the system. The call center people are condescending and the cops are reluctant to arrest people for quality of life crimes. Last summer kids in the building next door to me were throwing rocks off the roof. The cops refused to do anything about it. They came but said there was nothing they can do if the tenant doesn't answer the doorbell. They asked me if I knew the kids, I said no but I knew which apartment. The landlord was there and could have let the police into the building, but they never asked. Funny thing is they told me I should call if I see the kid again. Isn't it their job to follow up on complaints? They left without even trying to find out who it was. I think they're stretched too thin and would rather focus on real crime.

Parks in other urban areas are closed when it is dark, not in Jersey City. Before the renovation of Van Vorst Park pre-1974, there were few benches. After the renovations, benches and tables were placed. A lot of crime then took place then. In the 1990's they were removed. Now they are coming back. We, the taxpayers are making life comfortable for people who sell drugs with the benches and tables. As for the Wayne Street Park, it should have a tall gate that can be locked in the evening.

No way! What do we live in a police state? The rest of us law abiding citizens have the right to enjoy our public spaces without fear. The problem is the police don't take calls seriously and it's been going on for years. I witnessed a knife fight there several years ago, it took 45 mins for the cops to respond. Wtf? I don't want to feel like I live in a jail. In the summer lots of people play basketball in that park until the wee hours, which I don't think is a bad thing if people are a abiding by the law (edit: and quieting down after certain hours). If there were a gate everyone would be forced out at sundown.
Sorry I'm not willing to sacrifice my freedom to enjoy the outdoors for the sake of safety. The cops need to step up once and for all.

Yeah I hate those people. It takes a lot of persistence to get them to respond. They prioritize the calls based on the number of times they get a complaint, so you have to get a bunch of other friends to call too. I will keep an eye out on the happenings on Wayne and if you need someone to make additional calls about a problem post it here. There are a lot of people who care in this city but it's easy to get discouraged. The VVPA meetings are a wonderful resource of information.

I just think change from the top down is much easier than Sisyphus pushing a boulder uphill. Anyhow sorry if my statements earlier came off as combatative jennymayla, I think we agree on a lot. This city is an administrative nightmare and I think Steve has proven himself capable of navigating the maze. He only has so many hours a day to chase down the different departments to resolve issues.
About the cans... have you tried contacting the incinerator authority yourself to complain about the lack of garbage cans? Have you called the cops to complain about crack dealing in the park? When you see something call the cops and if you don't see results then contact Dina O'Reilly and ask her how we can get the problem solved, who to talk to, what to do, etc.
Healy isn't exactly a fan of Steve, so I wouldn't be surprised if he deliberately undermines any progress in Ward E just make Steve look bad and screw us over. Just sayin?

There is only so much one councilman can do. Healy and his stooges just have much more power over the big picture. Maybe if we had someone as hard working as Steve in the seat things would really turn around. We need young, smart, fresh thinking people like him in office.
Has anyone seen the movie about Cory Booker trying to fight the Newark machine? I think it's very similar to what's going on in this town. Cory finally shook things up and things in Newark are changing, the crime rate is down.
Fight the power Steve!
As for downtown dealing with it's own issues... if he gets elected there will be a lot of shake up in city hall and chance for new "clean" candidates to fill open positions. Change does begin at home and it has to come from all of us, not just one city council rep chasing down all the different administrative offices. I've been in Jersey City for 13 years now and I know it can be really discouraging to deal with the city sometimes. When Steve showed I up I became more inspired and hopeful for our future. He's the only person I know that follows up with personal emails. Have you ever received a personal email from Healy or any of his people? So let's can the smack talk and try to focus on what we can all do to help clean up our own streets and help our government help us.

Re: BJs - What are some of the good things to buy there?
Home away from home

So I was at BJs the other day buying paper towels and just out of curiosity I checked the prices over at Shoprite. BJ's is definitely the better buy especially for Bounty select-a-size. I also bought monster pack of boneless pork chops for $2.39lb; they were $2.59lb at SR. They were at least an inch and half thick so I cut them all in half lengthwise and froze them in packages of 4 servings. We had them for dinner the other night they were mm mm good. We also bought a package of Johnsonville Brats to bring to bbq on Sunday. Johnsonville Brats are about $4.50 for 5 sausages at SR; they cost about $8.50 for 12 at BJs. Chicken you have to be more cautious about there, if you compare the price per lb, it?s sometimes less and sometimes more. We also got a giant quart of Cherry Garcia for $5 or $6, they usually cost more than $4 for pint at SR. We were going to get a 2 pack of Simply Orange but decided it was too much quantity for the two of us, the price per volume was less then the grocery store. My bf bought a year supply razor blades. We thumbed through the books and I bought a 2010 Atlas for the car for $10 (normally costs $25). In fact most of books they had were steeply discounted. Last year I hosted a bbq and bought 2-4 gallon boxes of water that we didn?t open, they took them back with no problem. I think they only thing that sucks about BJs is the long checkout lines on the weekends, but I go mostly during the week when it?s a bit emptier. The mascarpone was a lot less expensive and if you?re making tiramisu then you need the large container anyway which is harder to find at the regular grocery store. For the small stuff I go to the AP most of the time. I hate SR, once in awhile I go there because it?s in the same parking lot as BJs, then only for something small like a clove of garlic or alcohol. God I wish BJs had alcohol.

Call off the search party...
Yes I put up flyers late last night and the owner called me a few minutes ago. She said he likes to go out in the backyards sometimes and prowl around, but always comes back in. He's super friendly and loves people. So when he wandered over to our backyard I thought someone might be missing him. She said she will get him a collar since he seems to have a bit of wanderlust.
Another happy reunion!

Does anybody have Tanya's cold borscht soup recipe?

She used to have it hanging in the window years ago. I tried to make it at home and it came out ok but not as good as Tanya's. Does Sava make this soup? It's cold beet soup with shredded beets, shredded cucumber, chopped dill, sour cream and hard boiled egg, salt & pepper to taste. I found it on a website listed as a Ukrainian soup, but like I said it's not as good as Tanya's and seems like it's missing something. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Brilliant idea! Maybe next time I'll bring my fishing scale, and weigh each product. Otherwise it's voodoo since "sheet count" is meaningless if the sheets vary so tremendously in thickness.

well actually the trick is to look at the linear feet. Or the sheet count. Usually Scott tissue has the best cost per linear feet for single ply tp. The softer stuff is usually 2 ply but has a lot less sheets and linear ft.
