BTW - who is the guy in the poster?

Nonsense on stilts? What specifically is nonsensical?

As to the poster, I don't know. I didn't create it. I merely saw it and took a snapshot of it earlier today and posted it to the thread since it was relevant to the topic. It looks like it might be Tupac Shakur, deceased nephew to the exiled communist Assata Shakur.

As for coerced twelve step indoctrination, well, that's a whole other matter.

Then again, maybe I realized that from the outset. (Sorry if you take umbrage with the vernacular use of the word ?cat.? Guess you?re not a Jimi Hendrix fan, or a fan of anything cool for that matter since no one cool would reply with indignation to the vernacular use of the word ?cat.?)

I disagree with your point though. I?m all for the aggressive panhandlers. Hopefully, they become more aggressive and increasingly violent. After all, that really is the only way to start and WIN a revolution -- by way of violence. I?d say the aggressive panhandlers are merely a manifestation of an underlying current of restiveness towards the status quo. Hopefully, they serve to highlight the violence inflicted upon all of us, everyday by the economic elite. I think it?s time for a change. If we could just get a hold of the military...

No, devilsadvocate, my claim (which I think is Marxian in nature) is that the ?local loser? wouldn?t be a loser were it not for a capitalistic (turned neo liberal capitalistic) economic system. This isn?t the prosperous America of post World War II. It is a new America rooted in an extreme brand of laissez-faire economics in which ?losers short on cash? have NO shot. Any assault on the ?local loser? is misplaced since neo liberal capitalist policies are more deserving of said assault and are responsible for the deepened societal malaise that began with Reagan and Thatcher. Maybe we wouldn?t be having this discussion if we took care of our people, many of whom are veterans like the guy who was baked to death a few weeks ago in a NYC jail cell after he was arrested for trying to keep warm in a stairwell. I mean, look at the stats! America has a higher rate of infant mortality, drug abuse, alcoholism, suicide, domestic abuse, teen pregnancy, mental illness and incarcerates more people than ALL other industrialized countries governed with a more balanced view. Now why might that be?

The ?local loser?? There?s a cat who panhandles on Newark and Coles almost everyday and night. The guy looks like he?s 70 years old (which means he?s probably only 60.) He is unassuming and not at all aggressive. Sometimes, I fish out some loose change for him and sometimes I don?t. But seriously, who is going to hire this guy? How is he supposed to get a foothold? What truly efficacious services are there for individuals like him? Why are so many homeless? You think that maybe capitalism has something to do with it?

Quote:

devilsadvocate wrote:
Let me get this straight. Your claim is that because economic elites have more sway than the local loser always short on cash, this implies that all political speech by marginalized portions of society are good no matter how completely stupid they are? I'm going to have to strongly disagree with you there. Most really horrible national political movements start by whipping up marginalized fools into supporting really stupid ideas.

Therefore, I'm going to absolutely tell idiots that they're being idiots and should shut up for the good of humanity. And aggressive panhandlers are absolutely awful. They aren't hated because they're poor. They're hated because they harass other people in the hopes that they can parasitically leach their money. Plenty of poor people don't do this. In fact, most don't. But if those that do are fined and/or spend some time in jail then I will happily vote for whatever politician was smart enough to sign that into law.

Right, ?some? panhandlers do have money, lol. I frequently see them making deposits at the bank before returning to their mortgage free properties. The spirit of the proposal is the same in terms of who it targets, regardless of any grey or flimsy distinction between a ?poor? person and a ?panhandler.? The two are interchangeable in the public?s linguistic reservoir.

The transactional nature of reading has to do with meaning making. The public?s reservoir of knowledge is such that the flyer?s message is clearly inferred by the recipient. Might it have been better? Perhaps through the eyes of an advertising executive, an editor at Better Homes and Gardens or a Hollywood production company but to the general public, the 99%, it looks just fine. The suggestion that it should be devoid of meaningless inaccuracies misses the point which is that the flyer?s message is clear. Rally at City Hall, period.

It doesn't target the poor, it targets a certain type of panhandling. If people with money panhandle (and some panhandlers do have money), then they should be treated the same way.

As for the flyer, a typo doesn't make the intent of the effort "dumb", but anything public facing should be produced with care. The flyer looks like it was made without anyone reviewing/proofing it. The better the message the more people it will help.

I live a 6 unit building that uses RELB and I have no complaints whatsoever. Ten years running now.

As to cost, I don't know what the per unit price is, maybe $150 per unit? I think it is an a la carte type of proposition. For example, do you want the snow shoveled? How about gettig the trash out for collection? Pest control?

I'd say pick and choose what services you want to pay for. Then give them a call.

Well, I looked at the flyer today and managed without the slightest degree of difficulty to comprehend fully that the rally is set for today, March 26th, 2014. Moreover, whoever created the flyer took the time to distribute its message by making the rounds and posting it for the community to see. You think we live in a democracy? That economic elites have no sway in political matters? Were this passed, it most certainly WOULD make it a crime to be poor since it aims to target the poor. This type of grassroots effort -- however misguided and ?idiotic? you THINK it is -- ought to be LAUDED. Not to be met with cynicism, derision and disdain.

So, to characterize the flyer as ?dumb? based on a typographical error that a fourth grader could easily deduce and by disparaging the time and effort vested to rise up and challenge the status quo is really quite smart. Not.

As to the ?dumb? ideas underlying the proposed ordinance, I?ll agree that it makes little sense to impose monetary fines upon the homeless. This much I?ll give you. But only from a humanitarian stance and not a pragmatic one.

Let's just say... dumb on both sides.

This proposed law is just dumb, because enforcement would be impossible and how in the hell would a $1250 fine ever be collected from an alleged violator?

Furthermore, this flyer is dumb too, because Jersey City doesn't make any appropriations for defense spending and/or the war in Iraq (or anywhere else). Nor can it be said that the city makes it a "crime to be poor".

I would love to see whatever circus this council meeting turns into. Two sets of idiots duking it out.

Oh, and according to this flyer, the protest was planned and happened a year ago, on a Tuesday (March 26, 2013???).

Re: Question on Safety of Brunswick Btwn 2/3rd
Home away from home
Home away from home

I purchased a condo in this area back in 2003. I sold it a year later and moved to 7th Street, just off B'wick where I have resided since. The thing to remember, is back in that area, especially west of B'wick, it is relatively quiet, especially at night, It is kind of secluded back there by Colgate and 2nd. So it is an excellent neighborhood in my opinion from a noise perspective. Also, the 2nd Street Bakery (family owned, I think) is just a gem of an old school Italian eatery, just out of this world in my opinion, in terms of the food and the value (really inexpensive!)

This area is totally safe, I wouldn't think twice about it but I am a relatively able bodied man, now in my forties.

But the place I bought back in '03, was I think considered "new construction" because it was a gut job and total renovation, six units in the building. In deference to the real estate interests of those living there now, I won't say which building. But here's the thing I want to say: it is my strong suspicion that the person or department within Jersey City Government that is responsible for enforcing building code got paid to look the other way during the construction of this building. I look at it now and see a building that will soon be characterized as dilapidated. The construction was so poor, you could literally hear the conversations in units above and below. Very cheap and shoddy work was done. I moved because there was no insulation between the apartments, it was as if I was living in a commune as opposed to a condo. So incredible that an inspector could have signed off in good conscience. This is important because a poorly constructed building affects the entire neighborhood in a negative way. I am very sorry that I did not pursue an independent investigation with an aim to sue. I am not a litigious type of person, but be careful with any purchases around there or anywhere downtown for that matter, especially on the entry-level type of properties. Fortunately, I did manage to sell at a profit just twelve months later but back then, everything was going up. Nonetheless, I am still pissed about the corruption that impacted me. It was dirty business indeed.

Re: How is the neigborhood on Virginia Terrace between JFK blvd and west side ave?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I believe Virginia Terrace is in the Jersey City neighborhood known as "West Side" and in part borders the neighborhood known as "Greenville."

I have never lived in that area, but having lived downtown and with a car for over twelve years. I'd say a major selling point is the expansion or renaissance that is New Jersey City University, only seven blocks to the South. They are building a new west Side campus down by the Home Depot on 440. It is a University that is growing, despite declining enrollments in recent years. It is the one thing about Jersey City that could be a huge game changer for that area, especially if it is able to develop a DI Men's basketball team. Also in the area, there is a gem of an Italian Deli called "Carmine's" that is not far from there, down on Mallory, I think.

Having said that, I'd be more inclined to take less space and invest in Downtown JC. Or, maybe in Bergen Lafayette. It is true, that a rising tide raises all boats, and jersey City is certainly rising in spectacular fashion. But, as with all low-socioeconomic areas, the concomitant issues that go along ARE a concern in terms of safety. There's just no getting around it. Where there are bad schools, there is poverty and by extension, there is crime.

Considering the Path train still runs to WTC during the weekdays, it most certainly does count, thanks! I read about Kummer on Yelp or somewhere on the internet. Looks like his YELP review page was closed? (http://www.yelp.com/biz/kummer-bart-a-md-new-york)

I have been having incredibly painful abdominal pain episodes and my current gastroenterologist is not up to the task, quite literally. He has dreadful reviews on YELP, more than 80% of which are with 1 star rating on scale 1-5, lol.

The pain episodes I get usually last 3 to 4 hours in duration during which time I am left to squirm about my apartment, seeking temporary respite in a hot bath. I've had a CT scan and a colonoscopy, both of which were negative. I am in and out of the JC Medical center ER on average once per month. The next step is an MRI but I can't seem to convince the ER docs to give me one as they want to first do another CT scan since my last was six months ago. Ugh.

I assume you attest that Bart Kummer is good, thanks for the heads up, I will look into scheduling tomorrow. There is also a guy on Jersey Ave, Arthur Stowe who is only a few blocks from me so I will look into him as well.

$1800 will get you a one bedroom downtown, maybe even $1700. Over the past two years, rents have increased as have prices. Stick to Hamilton Park and forget Paulus Hook because I'd venture to guess there are no $1800 studios down there, let alone one bedroom. Van Vorst might be a possibility, but in terms of safety, Hamilton Park or North of Columbus, especially North of Newark Ave., is where you want to look.

I am hearing that there is a lot of demand. A one-bedroom place on 9th Street, right off the park, is asking $1950. No matter, $1800 should be enough but you'll have to work it hard and might be better off paying a fee to one of the real estate companies like Boyne or Armagno.

True. But originating on the westernmost part of Duncan Avenue, you must first traverse the 1&9 in order to get to any route. There was no alternative.

These photos were taken last night around 5PM. The corners were in bad shape. Walking West on Duncan, on the North side, I was forced out into the street just before making the Northeast corner, then I had to hop back into the mini fjords just to make it to the corner while a minivan rolled up alongside me just inches away. It was a treacherous scene to walk, all the more tricky with a bike 48 hours previous.

There was a ton of truck traffic, going in and coming out of west Duncan and of course, the average speed on the 1&9 seems like 60 mph. Despite traffic lights, nowhere else in this city does traffic move as swiftly as it does along the 1&9 and 440 stretch.

Initial reports say police speculate she was walking her bike. If true, this tragedy is on the driver of the car/truck that hit her. Very sad story, one that could have been avoided. You got to wonder about the city's response to the storm(s). Was it all that good?

Interesting thought Dolomiti, thanks.

The President of the Embankment Preservation Coalition, Stephen Gucciardo, is quoted as saying:

If Hyman does not appeal the recent ruling, Gucciardo said the city will have a chance to buy the property for the original sale price of $3 million.

So there is a chance to purchase at the 3 million price tag. Even back in 2003, the Embankment swath was worth way more than 3 million, so I wonder how on earth Conrail agreed to a price this low. Unless, the 3 million was the price of the option, in which case I could undestand. Wold be nice if one of the local media outlets took this story and reported in depth.

So this ruling is a good step forward, but it is unclear how long this will go on, or how much the property will actually cost the city.

Well this certainly sounds hopeful.

Does anyone know how this plays out legally in terms of the invalidation? Does the city now pay an amount equivalent to what Hyman paid? Is there a way the city can sue Hyman for dragging this out for so long to the detriment and consternation of its people? I mean, if it was so obvious and all, shouldn't Hyman be run out of town for this?

What pathetic leadership! This has been ONGOING for weeks...in that specific area! Get over to Jones Park, in the back and underneath the turnpike. I'll take it from here morons at No Gas Pipeline (who by the way couldn't even process my tee shirt order.) I guess NGP was just a creation of fiction by SPECTRA. Wake up western downtowners!
