I noticed that there is a left turn lane for North bound traffic at intersection. Perhaps the solution is to turn this lane into a pedestrian island. This would have several effects. First, it shortens the distance between safe points for pedestrians. Second, by eliminating the left turn lane, vehicles queuing to make the left turn will stop one of the lanes of traffic (hence allowing pedestrians better access to cross). And third, would increase congestion at the intersection, thereby discouraging Holland Tunnel cut throughs from the turnpike.

The left turn lane you are referring to was just added this past spring at the same time they installed those rumble strips. I think they added this for the safety of the drivers because people used to cut into the oncoming lane of traffic in order to make a left onto 9th or 10th street.

I was walking home from Shop Rite this evening and noticed a security camera on top of a pole at the intersection of 8th & Marin (northwest corner). I never noticed it before. I wonder if they are using it for traffic purposes, like one of those cameras that takes pictures of the license plates of speeding cars.

During the school year there is usually a crossing guard at 9th/Marin so it is usually fairly safe on my morning commute. The afternoon is another story. One evening I saw a small child get struck by a car. He bounced off the front bumper like a basketball, but luckily just got up and walked away.

I was wondering the same thing. I think we need more details from the OP. Someone got out of their car and attacked a pedestrian?

I agree that intersection is very dangerous. I cross at least twice a day. I reported the problems with this intersection to the NWA a while back and they forwarded my concerns to the JC traffic dept. Soon after that those rumble strips were installed in that intersection. I suggested putting a traffic light there such as the one at 8th & Marin but I guess they didn't like that idea.

I was taking the Path home from Newark last night and as the train was rolling towards JC we passed a bunch of new Path cars sitting on the tracks. They look nice from the outside. Hopefully they will be in service soon.

My guess is that thing was probably in need of repair or maintenance and they did not want to pay for it. Funny thing is, I walk by there every day and never really noticed it until they started taking it down.

You don't need landline phone service to get DSL. I tried it out a few years ago and it was $34.99/month. I had really poor service so I switched back to Comcast.

Yup, my apartment is a 650 sqft 1BR and I have been paying $1200/mo for the past 4 years. Lucky for me the rent has never increased. I'm 2 blocks east of Hamilton Park.

How did they catch you? Did they capture your license plate on a surveilance camera somewhere? Were you issued a fine? I have definitely seen 'No Photography' signs on the GWB heading westbound.

Fine, a 'wolf pack' is a possibility, but that is no more common than a group of people attacking another person in retaliation for something. I don't think my theory should be completely dismissed as you suggest.

That mall has more security guards than the police force of an average town. Whether or not they are doing anything is another story...

Not that it makes things any better, but somehow I doubt this was a random incident. I doubt a group of guys just walked up to a random person and punched him in the face. The attackers probably had something against this guy - maybe he provoked them. They never seem to give that side of the story when these things are reported in the paper.

I am really worried now that I am working evening shift that I won't be able to find parking when I get home at late hours. Many cars from 10th are parking on my street now making it difficult to find parking at normal hours. I fear about how far away I am going to have to park.

Is the Erie garage still taking monthly rentals?

Not sure about Erie, but Newport mall garage has monthly rates. I hope they finish that construction soon. I live around the corner and the noise is deafening. I have to close my windows to talk on the phone. I can't imagine what it must be like for the people that live right on that street.

For whatever reason the Path doesn't seem to be any more crowded now than it did 3 years ago when I started riding daily. I tend to leave by 7:30am so maybe that helps.

From what I can see this roadwork is going to be ongoing for a LONG time. I can see at least a dozen pieces of large diameter cement pipe stretching halfway down the street. Looks like they will be digging up the entire street.

I plan to check out the store this weekend. Do they sell "regular" products (like Ragu sauce, for example) or is it mainly imported and specialty items? If nothing else I'm hoping this store will alleviate some of the crowding at Shop Rite. I was at Shop Rite last night and it seemed much less crowded than a typical Monday night.

It's probably too late to try and get a hotel room at the beach now that the 4th is just over a week away. You'll probably have better luck (and cheaper prices) at a hotel further inland. You can also check Craigslist to see if anyone is renting out their condo/shore house for the weekend.

Re: is there a Holland Tunnel real time traffic cam / status?

I find that the local radio stations are too late with their traffic reports. Every time they report an accident or delay I'm already stuck in it. I have tried metrocommute.com but have found their information to be inaccurate sometimes. Once they said there was a delay on 78-East, and since I was going West I didn't worry about it. Turned out the delay was actually on 78-West and I got stuck for almost an hour.

Call Newport Medical Associates - their office is on Washington Blvd. across from Staples. When you call tell them you have an emergency. I did that once and they gave me an appointment within a couple hours.

they looked kinda flammable.

I didn't see those. But what a waste of money printing those things up. All they needed to do was make an announcement over the PA systems.

It looks like they have a speed trap set up on Marin Blvd. There is a sign up around 9th & Marin warning of the speed limit, and I saw a cop car positioned at the fire station. This has been going on for about a week now.

I'm talking about my own car. If I'm parked in front of my house I'll be able to hear if the alarm goes off and run to the window to see what's going on. If it's somebody else's alarm I'll ignore it.

If you do that then you have to add the commute time on the Path to Newark Penn, transfer time, and then the NJ Transit train time. I used to drive from JC to Bridgewater every day and it wasn't bad at all. Took about 45 minutes with a straight shot down 78. Rarely any traffic.
