Re: Abandoned funeral home on Jersey at 4th St.

An interesting sidebar to the funeral home that it once was the residence of Dr. Kopechne, the uncle of Mary Jo Kopechne, who died in July of '69 when Ted Kennedy's car went off the Chappaquiddick Bridge. Just a bit more lore to the place.

Most likely what just happened was a "waffling" of the tectonic plate which ends in the area of the Meadowlands out by Route 3. For eons this remnant of a major glacial movement that was born from a primordial swamp, the largest home for mastodons and the like in the world has bumped about due to a "gassing" effect still happening today. It's kind of like your stomach settling after a big meal. Nothing to worry about but expect more in the future.

Re: Why is there a new flight path today - low commercial planes towards EWR

All US military aircraft fly within a vortex scanned and protected by NORAD. Whatever the mission no known aircraft can slip the "Invisible Thread" outside the 1,000 mile marker at the Outer Banks without an immediate response from the US. Unfortunately, as in the case of the young man who flew a single engine plane from Canada south into the midwest with an intent on suicide, it is difficult to gauge the threat at low altitudes and or speed hence the "shoot them down" policy is in effect. Lucky for this fellow he was able to land unharmed and walk to a 7/11 until he was picked up by the police.

Re: Embankment at 6th & Erie - Fire Department on Scene

I did'nt read "roadway shut" with regard to the embankment just that an area at 6th & Erie has been yellow-ribboned. It's clear to see that a huge stone at the top of this approximately twenty foot high wall has shifted considerably from its original placement and this should be taken seriously. The ping-pong of responsibility will end should some unfortunate being be struck by the massive stone. I don't know the story of the large stone lying adjacent to the embankment at Jersey & 6th but it did fall. No? Whatever the plan is for the future, be it a park, demolition, or whatever, it should be maintained for the safety of all.

Just passed the embankment at 6th & Erie & saw the Fire Department taping off the corner. They said a large stone at top may fall due to tree roots and the winter thaw cycle.
Said they had been there previously but it has shifted for sure. Hope the city or owner, whoever, will address this quickly and we don't see it fall onto the sidewalk and street.
Thing must weigh a 1,000 pounds. Calling Councilman Fulop.

The whale was just following its internal GPS to its ancestral home. Read the account of Hudson's voyage up the river named for him and it tells of whales by the dozen in the river. It's a sign the river is getting cleaner. Let's hope the day never comes when we are amazed at seeing a bird in the sky.

Not the best for sure but Bertucci's on Washington Boulevard is better than the glop from Helen's, Stella's etc. You gotta do the city for great pie.

"What's it all about, Alfie?" The Hilton Hotel/Condos extravaganza is to be constructed just west of the Sand Bar in and around the Trailer Park area. 2.7 acres, which were not originally under the control of Marko (sic), the developer of Liberty Harbor North, which is all the rest of the new la-la land. The address being bandied about of 333 Grand Street which is the rental office for LHN is not the address of the new Paris Hilton which most likely would be Marin Boulevard. So it will be on the water with great views, light rail & water taxi & Sand Bar outside your door though I don't think the SB will survive the new blast of HOTELCONDOMANIA. We shall see. It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood.

Re: Jersey Avenue entrance to Liberty State Park
Home away from home
Home away from home

It's already under way. The next phase of the "Stealth Highway" from Bayonne to the GW Bridge. So called because it's done in spurts to avoid public scrutiny & the law. Jersey Avenue will be widened at the footbridge to accomodate four lanes of traffic, two north & two south to tie into Phillips Drive. Look at Jersey Avenue between the footbridge & Grand Street. It's not that wide for nothing. Development interests are driving this road and it will happen. Further south along this road at Linden Avenue & Caven Point Road the one block kink in this road will be eliminated by plowing through just east of the Recreation Field and move north to tie in with the rest of this highway.
Gonnahappen. Take it to the bank.

Chase has two real banks here that I know of. One is at the corner of Columbus & Warren and the other on Newport Parkway, west side, opposite Bertucci's.

Re: CITY HALL PLANS FOR CUTS AT JCPD
Home away from home
Home away from home

The police story is going to be a major issue in the upcoming
election. What the public has to learn, hopefully with a full investigation by the press, is exactly the number of police Jersey City has at this moment in time. Healy said tonight on City Channel One that when he came into office we had 788 police officers and today we have 895. Recent reports heard are that during Healy's tenure as many as 150 police officers have tested positive for steroids and/or other substances. Are they off street duty? Some off and some back on? Of 895 officers not all do patrol duty. Eliminate the brass, those on limited duty or suspension and the numbers dramatically shift as to the number on patrol. Mr. Vega said we are coming into hard economic times. Really?
If you hear Healy's ads all is well in the kingdom yadayada.
The city is building tower upon tower, thousands more people to protect etc. This story needs to be fleshed out and soon.

Re: Ferry sends S.O.S. -- NY Waterway's owner says next berth is Chapter 11
Home away from home
Home away from home

Maybe there's a story behind the story but at first read there's a bad taste in the mouth. The ferry service and its crews have done a magnificent job over the years. In the US Air landing they performed quickly and well. The crews of these boats along with NY Waterway were acknowledged by the City of New York and were featured on many news stories etc. The management of NY Waterway is miffed that US Air did not acknowledge them. I think that is hardly the case. For sure Sully & his crew thanked them immensely many times over. When one does a good deed for someone it is right to ask that person to pass it on. Yes the ferry is overpriced and yes it could be run more efficiently. That said the management of NY Waterway can find a more tactful way of saying they need a bailout and not suggest that the US Air incident was a contributing factor to its financial problems.

It's only a name. If the water is coming from the same source which I believe is a reservoir in north Jersey it's fine. Much of the bottled water sold comes from one source and hyped as designer brands under a multitude of names. Bourgeois nonsense.

Are we to believe that the Healy group let two million dollars go simply because it was brought in by Mr. Manzo?
If this is true it is unconscionable and the city group against crime should call Healy to task for this major willful blunder.

It's a remarkable building with modest catering facilties. From what's heard in the hood it's owned by the Polish War Veterans and they lease it out to all & sundry for dances etc. Seems the spillout into the streets with noise and drink should be a police issue but we all know that ain't never gonna happen.

We have to remember that the boozefog politicians and their hangers-on with a predilection toward self destruction are the very same who have us, the people, on a crash course to civic doom. We must call them out at every turn in order for civic responsibilty be returned to us. Go to the One Block parade on the 17th and watch their behavior.

It's only news if it makes the papers. Nontroversy, controversy, shmontroversy, you gotta love it. When you read a line that says something is "regarded as an international model in stakeholder consensus negotiations and sustainable development" you become aware this is psychobabble spouted by those who think they know things we don't because something really, really important is on the verge of happening but don't ask what it is because what it is, it ain't. Get it?

Quite right and all that but it is an established fact that LSC has distanced itself from JC from the start. They recently ate humble pie in asking JC for some "green" which they got in the form of a loan and agreeing to mention JC in their pronouncements.

Cops and Steroids - where's facts?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Cops and steroids - where's facts?
Monday, February 16, 2009
Jersey Journal
T he sports world was shocked by New York Yankee superstar Alex Rodriguez's admission of steroid use to enhance his on-field performance. Here in Hudson County we simply ask: Whatever happened to an investigation of steroid use by members of the Jersey City Police Department?
It has been more than a year since city officials confirmed that such a probe was underway.
The public only learned that there might have been officers taking performance enhancing drugs such as human growth hormone after a television news report last year that the New York City Police Department launched its own internal affairs investigation into alleged police use of steroids. It was triggered by an October 2007 raid on Lowen's Pharmacy in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where $7 million in steroids were found.
Jersey City cops' names appeared on the pharmacy's client list. These officers were relieved of their guns and put on administrative duty in late February 2008. They were expected to stay there pending the outcome of the investigation, which is currently being pursued as a personnel matter.
Police and city officials refused to name the officers or say how many have been placed on administrative duty.
Anabolic steroids are artificially created hormones. They are similar to the male sex hormones in the body. Steroid supplements are a weaker variety, but just as illegal without a prescription. The idea is that their use will improve strength and increase muscle mass.
There was even a lawsuit filed against the city and Police Department by a city resident who called for help when he spotted a burglar on his roof. He charged that he was attacked by a police officer who was in a "roid rage."
Since the announced steroid probe the Police Department has announced it is working on a plan to annually test 25 percent of the police force's 900 members. What has happened to this proposal?
There should also be a plan - hopefully an upgraded proposal - to help officers deal with substance abuse, including alcohol.
It is also about time the city told its citizens the results of the internal investigation into alleged steroid abuse by officers. This is not a request.

Ignorance is bliss.

Re: Is Smoking allowed in apt building lobbies...?

Smokers often assume since they are not in their unit no one else is being effected. The people who smoke outside office buildings are an example. Their smoke blows in the wind and it impacts on the passerby. Try one of those door cushions that keep the cold out. If your door is tight it may help. Your home is your castle and if there are no other issues you're probably ok.
