I never understand this, what exactly did you expect when moving to Jersey City? You live in a small bubble downtown thats nice , do you honestly think "the bad element" dosnt go down there?

Maplewood is a good choice , just make sure to stay further away from Irvington. Give yourself a couple of block buffer zone.

Littering is not cool. We get it. But why is it that Jersey City streets are always trash laden while the streets in Williamsburg or even Union City remain clean? Aren't there disrespectful teenagers in those areas as well? It's because government services in JC continues to be a #OOPS#ing joke. Clean the streets properly and we wouldn't have this problem. It's been almost 2 months since the street sweepers have come around. They blame the snow.....i blame them for being lazy. Snow didn't prevent those other towns from removing trash.

The Ferris kids can smoke as much weed and eat as much junk food and fight amongst each other all they want. Have you ever been outside of Lucky 7's or Jordan's lounge at 3 in the morning? Hard drugs+violence+public urination. Why don't you go tell those animals to stop throwing their cigarette butts and drug bags on the ground.

Oh.......and some people here want JCPD to give littering tickets? Are you kidding me? This isn't #OOPS#ing Princeton.

Please for the sake of people from JC don't compare it to Williamsburg, why does Williamsburg always seem to be the protocol for comparison? As for Union City I really don't feel it is clean at all or at least when stacked up against Downtown JC. Bergenline has the same problems with dog poop and bones and such. As a matter of fact the first time I stepped in dog poop was in Union City, then accidentally brought it into my apartment....it was a bad day.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I am glad I bought my house in B-L, and will surely ride out the waves of whatever happens good and/or bad in the years ahead. I will say this much, the value of my house has maintained within reasonable limits over the past 6 years despite the real estate burst. And no one has broken into my car, etc., and I have mostly fine neighbors. And I am a very good neighbor also. Not saying it is perfect, by any stretch, and there are plenty of things I would like to change. But all things considered, there are very few places besides B-L where I could have been able to purchase this great, spacious house, less than a half hour commute to my NYC job, next to LSP, with ample bus and light rail service at the corners.

Im all for the grimy JC as most of this board probably knows by now, but you can get a place in Bayonne with a lot of space, short commute to NYC and close to the light rail. Most important is you will peace of mind that you wont have a stray bullet go through your window.

There appears to be a chicken bone epidemic in downtown Jersey City. I've lived here 3 years now and I've lost count of how many times I've seen discarded half-eaten drumsticks on the sidewalks. For me, it's definitely a weekly sighting at the very least.

Dogs can choke, people can slip. Also, it's pretty gross. If anyone has any information on this bizarre occurrence I'd love to hear it!

What are you talking about? Crystal Point is at least 75% sold as is Trump. 13 more units were sold at Trump last month. Drive by at night and the lights are on in apartments from the bottom to the Penthouses.

What buildings are largely empty?

However, I agree that we are hugely undercounted by the census.

I almost never see a significant amount of lights on in the big condo buildings, essp. Trump.

I also appreciate the cultural diversity of JC, but like Bill suggested, it is no mystery that cities that are more diverse tend to have higher crime. I get all of that, but what's disappointing is that it costs the same to live in Downtown JC as it does in Hoboken, and you just don't really see this stuff happening in Hoboken. It costs MORE to live in Downtown JC than it does in Weehawken (generally), and you don't really see this stuff happening in Weehawken.

Now I would rather live in Downtown JC than those other cities, but how long before other people realize that they can live a similar urban, walkable lifestyle, for the same or less cost, in other places without having to worry about their safety? With the ultimate result being, Downtown JC descending back into a not-so-nice neighborhood.

I realize that this sounds kind of "sky is falling", but it might not be too far from the truth.

Honestly, maybe the prices of homes in Downtown JC have gotten a little too high for what you get here. Who the F wants to pay $1.8 Million to live in one of those brownstones near where this nonsense occurs on Wayne Street?

This is exactly what I've been saying since the dawn of time.

I will say though, that I have literally never, not once, felt unsafe in any part of Downtown, at any hour...so these reports are always a bit jarring.

So what? South Orange has some shotty areas around Newark and costs around the same, yet you don't here about nearly as much crime in SO as you do in Newark or Irvington for that matter.

Yea I know, you've told me in the past. Anytime I've gone to bars on the waterfront the people I meet are usually people that work in the area and just wanna get tipsy or people from other areas of JC. It is very rare that I go to a bar Downtown (with the exception of a few) where the main demographic are mainly downtownians.

Chicken/egg v. Egg/chicken. It's understandable to be embarrassed by living here if you based your assessment of Jersey City on Newark Ave. and Columbus Drive. But I bet if there were a good reason for those people to stay here (along the lines of the retail/pedestrian zone) people would welcome it. Even the ashamed.

And by "good reason", I don't mean a franchise of a mediocre chain restaurant. People want creativity, diversity and quality. No one flies to NY from Europe for the Best Buy at Union Square or the K-Mart in Penn Station.

I agree and technically Newark ave would have to become creative in order to flourish. I highly doubt that any walmart or other big time chain would set up shop their, nor would anyone really want it. Even Bergenline ave kinda got it right, I mean they have rite aid and gnc and all that but also a lot of independently owned mom and pop stores and restaurants.

True. I'm still convinced that most of the population of Newport and a good share of the people in PH believe anything West of Washington is equal to walking through Camden at 2am.

heights is actually absolutely correct - Central Avenue in the Heights looks like the Champs-Elysees compared to Newark Avenue. Thriving retail, as well as other stuff I WISH downtown had, like a fish market, authentic italian delis, etc.

Here's my question, to which I truly don't have an answer - how does retail thrive on Central Ave, yet fails miserably, time and time again, on Newark Ave, which is seemingly surrounded and inhabited by a more affluent demographic, and also a demographic that is less likely to own a car??

Just like a previous poster said, Newark ave will never see any high end retail because of its proximity to Newport mall. The best you can hope for is some type of bar strip which then you'll be left with the Hoboken crowd.

You hit the nail on the head. What you will get instead are a bunch of independently owned businesses which will close in a year and give way to another.

That's par for the course in high density living and is no reflection on the cleanliness of any one person since they spread so easily. You could keep your home spotless but if someone down the hall brings them in, bam!

They are doing it in the obvious.

If you Jersey City originals are such scrappy bare-knuckle defenders of this great city, then why did downtown degenerate under your watch, and only become livable with the emigration of "out of towners?" Did you guys just abandon it?
