Re: ANIMAL CONTROL dumps CATs/KiTTENS in Lincoln Park

Home away from home

They are not up for adoption because they are still under the state mandated stray hold, which is 7 days. If any of them prove to be unadoptable, they will go back to the group who trapped them. They will decide whether to TNR or work with them in foster homes.

Sounds like that's exactly what you're looking for?

I just wanted to say thank you to Robin, not only for working so hard on this, but for having the guts give Joe Frank the credit he deserves. No one is perfect but Joe has been an easy target for a long time....

Regardless of whether or not an animal ultimately is put up for adoption, any stray animal brought into a shelter in NJ must be held for 7 days to provide the owner with a chance to locate and reclaim their pet. If the cat had been brought to the shelter she would have been home, safe, days ago.

This is good too: www.abbeyglen.com

You're not supposed to bury animals in Jersey City, the Health Dept. would have more information on that. You can however dispose of a body in the normal trash, provided it's in a tied bag.

the male weighs about 160-175 and the female closer to 100. definitely extremely large dogs, but not quite 200lbers.

I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing about dog breeding, but this doesn't make logical sense to me.

If a dog is bred, for example, to be a guard dog, like a German Shepherd, won't that dog breed be more aggressive than one bred to, say, be a lap dog?

i'd be remiss if i didn't start by saying that german shepherd's are not a guardian breed, they are herding dogs.

to continue with the idea of guard dogs - there is a line between guarding and unbridled aggression. rottweilers for example, a common guardian breed, are bred to guard their home/family/whatever from strangers and intruders. they are not bred to indiscriminately attack anyone they come across. breeds do have tendencies based on their original use. i could be wrong but i think what jaah37 is trying to convey is that these dogs, to use a relevant example, are not allegedly aggressive simply because they are boerboels (which is their correct breed).

jaah, don't under estimate the role genetics play in a dog's temperament. while many dogs are simply the products of their environment, there are dogs that are born with aggressive temperaments.

food:

honshu - amazing sushi you can have delivered! plus, i can walk there if i'm not feeling too lazy.

amelia's - 2nd to whoever recommended the pulled pork sandwich

presto's - it's a little hole in the wall, but the food is outstanding

places:

liberty state park - one of my favorite places of all time. just beautiful.

the peninsula - wonderful place to walk the dogs on a summer evening - maybe they'll even go for a dip!

van vorst park - lush vegitation, movies in the summer, and a flea market....need i say anything else?

stores:

canis minor - very customer friendly and supports animal rescue

tia's - ok, so i haven't actually been inside, but their window display is always fantastic!

are you talking about the woman who was killed in san fransisco years ago? those were presa canarios (a mastiff breed) and they had quite a history of aggression. there's a book on it, scary stuff!

if it was the boerboels, then yes, the woman has a son with some sort of disability.

I really can't see this bread of dog being overly aggressive...

there are many mastiff breeds, some of which have more aggressive/guardian tendencies. since the article used the generic, lower case "mastiff" as opposed to a capitalized proper name, i tend to think they're not being breed specific.

then again, i might be giving the jersey journal too much credit...

oh come on! you're mad because a cop shot and killed a convicted felon who was high on drugs and carrying a loaded weapon?! that's just ridiculous.

greenvillchick, i'm probably of the same cloth as you - i prefer city life and i tend to like rougher neighborhoods and the inhabitants thereof. i went to school in harlem, spent a lot of time in paterson, and now spend most of my time in jersey city. but when the circumstances fit (as in this case), arguing against it lessens the legitimacy of any sort of movement away from racial profiling or stereotyping.

It's actually the Hoboken Animal Infirmary and Downtown Veterinary Associates that are part of the same practice. I use the Hoboken Animal Infirmary for my dog and found their service to be excellent. My dog has very severe allergies and separation anxiety and the doctor went out of her way to reach out to specialists to find out what would be the course of action considering multiple medications might be needed.

Re: Controversial rapper Jim Jones to speak at Jersey City's "HIV/AIDS and the Hip-Hop Generation" event

How is it that having Jim Jones speak on one topic legitimizes his views on others? Just because he may not have socially acceptable opinions on certain topics doesn't mean that he can't and shouldn't promote messages that are positive and socially acceptable. Homophobia and violence are everywhere in hip hop - unfortunately it's the way it is, but it's not just Jim Jones.

The fact of the matter is kids like rap. They listen to rappers and public figures, so why not have a positive message coming from someone they're actually excited to see and hear from? Makes sense to me.

Ceaze is pretty much a nationally recognized and respected graffiti artist. Like graffiti or not, it's pretty silly to straight up call it vandalism when he tags on abandoned/decrepit buildings mostly and clearly has artistic talent.

Now those kids scribbling "AIDS" and "DIE" on mailboxes....that's vandalism.

I have no info on where you could bury your pet, but Liberty Humane Society offers group cremation services for animals. The ashes cannot be returned to you however. The fees are $15 for a cat, $30 for a dog.

Enforcing licensing laws is the first step to combating animal related problems - including dog bites. If there is accountability ie. your dog's tags can identify you within a matter of minutes as it's owner, you can bet your butt that people are going to be more careful about what their dog does. Like FAB said, something happens, the dogs aren't licensed and no one steps up as the dog's owner. Guess what? That person just got off, whether their dog crapped somewhere and they didn't pick it up or their dog severely mauled someone, they can't be held responsible because no one can prove that the dog belonged to them.

And really, no need to twist words. The poll did not ask if they were the "most" dangerous breed, it asked if they were more dangerous than other breeds. As a breed surely pit bulls can be considered more dangerous than some other breeds, but whether they are the ultimate is up for debate. There are many other breeds that I would consider much more dangerous than pit bulls if in the wrong hands.
