Interesting. We have these re-usable labels that can peel off and go onto bottles as many times as you want. write on them with a crayon or dry-erase pencil and they wipe off. Those would be a good alternative. They're called GrogTags.

Well our shop is a liquor store, so there are different laws compared to a bar. We do have some empty growlers for sale right now, for $6 including a polyseal cap (most bars charge $10 with a metal cap I think?). It's got a Thirsty Quaker sticker on it but it's easy to pull off if you need a blank one.

White Star and Iron Monkey are the only places downtown that I know of doing growlers. There are some places in Hoboken like Little Town as well. I've brought non-branded growlers to Iron Monkey and they didn't give me any problems, but call ahead to be sure at any location.

We were really hoping to do growlers at our shop, based on some preliminary info we got from the ABC, but it looks like that won't be happening without some policy changes with the state, unfortunately.

If you head to White Star for growlers, stop by our shop and grab some extra stuff to take along!

I think the USA are the highest they've ever been in the FIFA world rankings going into the World Cup - at 13th they're above the Netherlands and France for example. They're capable of providing a few shock results against other nations. Plus doing well - say reaching the semis - would be a huge boost for the sport in this country in terms of support, finance and TV coverage.

I love watching the artistry and individual brilliance in teams like Brazil, Spain and Argentina. And I tend to cheer on teams that field players from international clubs I support during the regular season. But perhaps this year I'll support the USA all the way. It would be awesome if they won.

Before the 2006 World Cup, the US was ranked #5, behind only Brazil, Mexico, the Czechs, and Netherlands. They also finished at the bottom of the group that year.

Spring was always an unrealistic goal, but it is moving along. They recently got several approvals on their plans, so stuff is happening now and should move pretty quickly.

Also, Merseles Studios is right next door above Monaco Locks and is being done by the same group doing White Eagle Hall. If you're not familiar with Merseles Studios, it's a performance space and gallery. They've also had some music events there, as well as a weekly puppet show for kids. So stuff is definitely afoot.

I don't think we ever came here to thank all of our neighbors who stopped by for our Grand Opening BBQ. It was a a lot of fun, and it was cool having Mayor Fulop and Councilwoman Osborne over for a ribbon-cutting. NJ News should be airing something soon about us as well, so we'll post that up once it airs.

It was such a great time that we're planning something for next season's JC Fridays with live music and comedy, and possibly a beer garden in the parking lot.

We're planning a beer tasting next Thursday, June 12 from 6-8pm, but couldn't decide on a brewery. We're going to do either Stone, Smuttynose, or North Coast. If any of you have a preference, let us know here, or on facebook, or just stop into the shop and tell us.

We also have a Southern Tier tasting on Thursday, June 26.

Upcoming classes include a June 29th cider-making class (sold out), a July 13th Intro to Brewing Class, and an August 3rd All-Grain Brewing Class.

Kare Kare at Max's of Manila
Buffalo Wings at Henry's on the Hudson
Hawawshi at Gypsy Grill
Smores cookie and Cookies & Crepes
Chicken/Lamb & chopped pita from one of the carts by Exchange Place
Chicken Parm at Helen's
Pepperoni Bread at Pecoraro?s
Any sandwich at Monmouth St Deli
Five Guys is great

left-side bike lane markers have been painted on several streets Downtown. So I guess we are getting the left-side lanes. Oddly, they seem a bit wider than the previous ones, though I haven't measured them.

I've talked to the police about abandoned bikes in the past and they don't really care for it. Since the plaza is (I think) the property of the Grove Point building, you could probably direct it to them. I'm sure they're just as eager as you to get rid of abandoned bikes out front.

That's the platform that trains arrive on. Occasionally they'll switch it so the trains also depart from there. Not sure of the reason, but I assume it's due to track maintenance or something like that.

Yep! We just picked up about 400 pounds of honey, most of it is from NJ bees and NJ crops. It's from South Jersey, so not quite as local as Jersey City, but the JC honey I've seen tends to be pretty expensive because it's small-batch.

If you do stop in for honey, these varieties are from NJ crops: Cranberry, Blueberry, Pine Barren, Wildflower. The others (Orange Blossom, Buckwheat, Clover) are from NJ bees, but the bees get trucked down to Florida/other places.

I heard a funny story recently about beekeepers in Brooklyn all finding their honey blood-red because the bees found their way into the Maraschino Cherry warehouse. So sometimes local honey isn't *exactly* from local flowers.

Hey everybody, just a couple news items on things.

If any of you are brewers, we want to cover our beer fridge with homebrew labels. Bring a label or two into the shop and we'll slap it on the fridge!

We're also working on a few 1-gallon recipes and should have some small-batch kits soon for people that want to test out brewing.

As for the growler situation, we're still working with the city and state the figure out the legalities. We'd had some good news before, but it's getting a little more complicated now. Hopefully we'll have a great announcement about it soon.

Our backyard is all cleaned up now, so classes on how to brew will be starting up as soon as this horrid cold weather goes away.

Oh, and we have a few tastings coming up soon! The first one will be spirits from Rogue, New Holland, Ballast Point, and Berkshire Mountain. We have a mailing list signup at the bottom of our site, if you want to be the first to know!

I'm really glad to hear it! If you haven't been by recently, we've got way more beer now than we did a couple of weeks ago. Just checked and it's 557, to be exact, and there's new stuff every day. We're also slowly shoring up our vodka, bourbon, and wine collections.

By the way, we had an article in the Jersey Journal with lots of pictures, check it out!

I promise we'll stop bugging everyone on JCList soon, but we do have a request. We're trying to get our growler system set up ASAP, but want to make a short video to promote the idea. If anyone wants to take 5 seconds to make a cameo in it, just ask a cashier about growlers. We've had so many people ask us about growlers, and having actual members of the community on video bugging us about it will make it that much easier to to get it happening.

We just got Palate Wrecker and Hop Head Red in today! Along with another 38 new beers, and some more spirits from Rogue and other craft distilleries. I've decided to try and keep a daily tally of what new stuff comes in.

I'll check in to the Salty Clamdigger. Texan beers are difficult to come by so I doubt we'll get that beer from Marfa, but I'll keep my ears open.

If you all have requests, please send them to contact@thirstyquaker.com, or stop into the shop and fill out our request sheet.

We're trying to get our growler system set up ASAP, so we'll have Carton on draft. They've started doing cans of Boat as well, but are only supplying to places that do growlers already at the moment, so once we do draft we should be able to get cans as well.

I'm Curious, how does JC Buy Rite have Boat Cans without growler fills?
Probably because of buying power, Buy Rite gets special treatment because of the huge buying power they have.

Haha, well we're beer people so we really need the community to tell us what wines to stock. If you've got any suggestions, we'd love to hear them. Most of the wines we've tasted so far have been excellent for the price, so I think we're doing a pretty good job overall.

Is there anyway to see your inventory online? I know you have the PDF but I also know that it can't be easy for you guys to update on a delivery-by-delivery basis.

Today we got a few things from Clown Shoes: Clementine White, Hoppy Feet, and Undead Party Crasher. We also got a few more scotches in.

I'll be updating that beer list online in a bit actually, as it's somewhat outdated. We have plans to join beermenus.com to make it easier to find out what's in stock, or you can check us out on twitter https://twitter.com/ThirstyQuaker, as we'll be tweeting the new stuff.

We don't at the moment, but I'll look into it. We're focusing mostly on craft American beer but I'll see if there's anything available. It's difficult to source some of those Carribean and Central American beers.

There is a place called "The Brewers Apprentice" in Freehold that does this.

Robin.
Unfortunately we won't be doing any brew-on-premises. I think in order to do that we would have to get a brewery license. Maybe in the distant future we'll turn our garage into a brewery to do brew-on-premises, but we don't have any plans to do something like that now.

I don't think we'll have curated six-packs, but we have had a few people ask about mix and match six-packs. With craft beer, it's a commitment to buy an entire pack that you're not familiar with, so we're thinking about setting aside a door in our fridge for mix and matches, so you can pick out a bit of this and a bit of that and find what really strikes your fancy. Hopefully if we do get around to this, it will help with finding great things you like.

I'm sorry to everyone that wasn't impressed with our selection, but I assure you we're trying our hardest to make this the best beer shop in JC. If you have any suggestions, please send us an email at contact@thirstyquaker.com or fill out our request form at the front desk. We're a brand new shop, so many distributors haven't been able to get us the extra rare stuff, but we have great relationships with a lot of breweries, and have been promised some great stuff in the future (Brooklyn Blast, Kentucky Breakfast Stout, and more!).

And once we start doing growlers, we'll have a lot of amazing things you definitely will not find in any other shop in JC, because lots of special edition beers simply are not bottled.

I know we said we have about 500 beers in stock, and it turns out you all are right that we were off, we only have 471 beers in stock (a few sold out today). We're getting new stuff in every day though, and tomorrow we'll have beer from Brunehaut, Atlantic Brewing, Arcadia, Southern Tier, Boxcar, Stevens Point, DC Brau, and Telegraph, as well as new spirits from New Holland, Ballast Point, Rogue, and Northern Maine Distilling.

moobycow wrote:
For example, I went in last night hoping to pick up a Barley/Wheat wine or a gose but there were none to be found.

I'm really sorry you didn't find any barleywine, but we do have several in stock. Off the top of my head, I know we have Anchor Foghorn, Uinta Cockeyed Cooper, and the Class of '88 (A collaboration between North Coast, Rogue, and Deschutes).

If you ever have trouble finding something in the future, just ask someone, we love talking beer. And if you have a particular gose you're looking for, let us know and we'll see what we can do.

It's mostly just used for force carbonating kegs and sometimes bottles. We'll look into the equipment necessary to do refills, a lot of people in the homebrewing community would love it.

I wish we'd mentioned this earlier, but if any of you are free this Sunday, come to the Hoboken Beer and Chili Contest. The Thirsty Quaker will be serving some great beer and chili and we would love to meet some of you. It's best to get tickets ahead of time.

We haven't set up our growler system yet, that's a plan for the near future, and once we do, we'll of course have gas for our draft lines, but we don't have any plans to store large numbers of tanks for sale or exchange.

Unfortunately, we won't be doing gas, as we don't have the equipment or space, and insurance for that is a whole different ballgame.

Hoboken Beer and Soda does CO2 tank exchanges, and I know Staples (and I think Sears as well) do SodaStream tank exchange as well. If you do want refills instead of exchanges, there are some gas companies in the industrial part of Ironbound that refill.
