Another vote for ATS - also recommended by our home inspector. They came on time, did a sweep both in the front and back yards and, if I recall correctly, provide a guarantee (in our case, no oil tank was found).

Was talking to a neighbor who was walking his dog with a grey and white cat following them on Beach St. in the Heights. The neighbor said the cat showed up one day and takes walks with them. Definitely seems to be a house cat that got loose. Friendly to neighbor but a bit skittish (would not come up to me). Seems to be fairly young, may have been with family with dog as it seems to like the neighbor's dog. Neighbor cannot take the cat so over time it will just become feral and likely have a shortened life. Cat seems very sweet - mostly grey with white nose and booties.
Anyway, just wanted to post this is case someone is looking for the cat.

Yes, it's 110 Hutton (less than a quarter block off of Central) and right now food sold to be warmed at home. Soups look very good - will try next time. Who knows, if they get enough business they may look to serve items hot.
I also tried the poppy seed roll - nice sized, fresh, tasty, plenty of poppy seeds and not too sweet - I bought that, a jar of red current jam, and a packet of sweet paprika (size similar to packet of Knor sauce mixes) -- all for under $5. Pastry alone in a lot of other places would be close to that price.

Yes, waiting to see what his new taxes will be -- will be funny if he appeals. So far, asijc.com has not listed much for the Heights (check current revaluation, go to Jersey City and scroll to bottom -- you'll see a link for "assessments" which is now a spreadsheet. I usually don't walk down Hutton, but by chance did and found an authentic Polish shop opened recently. It's a small shop off Central Avenue (between Central and Summit). Has little of everything -- dry goods (noodles, spices, real honey, etc.), meats (ham, sausage, etc..). Some very nice homemade soup and other goodies.
Owners are very nice.
Bought some items which were delicious .

Re: the IRS ruling. We did get bills for through July 2018 so I would think we can apply half of 2018 property tax as 2017 deductions.

To be deductible, 2018 property taxes must be assessed and paid in 2017.
If my understanding is correct, then this means that only half of the 2018 taxes (1st half of the year which have been assessed) would be deductible if paid by Dec. 31.
Not sure what the impact of the property tax re-evals may mean??
FYI - The JC tax dept was accepting payments for as much of 2018 as you wanted to pay. They were pretty efficient given that I'm sure they were not anticipating this wrinkle of the GOP tax bill.

I also use ATS Environmental -- they were recommended by our inspector who I totally trust. Very easy to schedule, arrived on time, report came quickly. Fortunately our house as well as another that we bought did not have any oil tank -- the guy from ATS indicated the house probably went from coal to gas, and explained how the front basement window was probably a shute for coal why back when.

With regard to what's the big deal.
If you do have a buried oil tank, the problem may be when you try to sell. Many buyers will look to have a sweep done (wise move). Removing a tank can be expensive . Our neighbor had a tank that was half full and had a leak. The company removing the tank made the assumption that the tank was full and that half had leaked into the ground (not sure if this is typical -- but it is what happened to him). Ended up costing him around $18,000. And this was without any neighbors challenging that their property had been contaminated.

So will residents who do not have cars be able to get a yearly pass for use when renting vehicles?

Drove by Nelson and Kennedy last night and there were fire trucks and police in the area. I assume there was a fire at the very south end of Nelson. Haven't seen anything in the news so hopefully whatever it was, it was handled quickly.

My understanding is that as of earlier this year, JC became a sanctuary city. So if threats to cut DOJ federal funds to sanctuary cities come to pass, what funding will we now lose and how will our taxes be affected? What's the impact of funding for police?

The Oculus is a death trap waiting to happen. If there is ever a situation that causes a panic there, it will be terrible. The stairs leading to the Path trains are terribly designed, the flooring and stairs are hard marble, and there are far too few open exits. The side exits are short escalator, stairs, and another set of escalators with lines to get on the escalators any time around rush hour. Commuters are always walking into one another's way. I compute there each workday and everyday I look to see if they have opened more exits (they have not). It was designed for an open concept and for shopping, but it a terrible commuting hub.

I have to agree with the original poster - The Recreation Dept. has become a major JOKE, and has only gone downhill under Fulop's administration. Forget about the water temperature at Pershing Field Pool -- how about the showers ?? They are dirty, disgusting, with paint that has been peeling for almost a year ... and their solution has been to put up a sign asking patrons for their patience. I guess patience is needed when the same blob of hair can sit in the floor drain of the shower day after day.

Fulop should be embarrassed and finally put someone in charge who is qualified and committed. I called the Recreation Department about different matters several times and Williamson is never there. One time the person answering the call seemed puzzled as to why I was calling with a complaint about Pershing Pool -- and I actually had remind them that the Pool comes under the Dept of Recreation. Seems like they don't even want to be bothered overseeing their own facilities / programs. Word is Williamson is spending more time selling insurance (his REAL job) instead of doing what the City is paying him $117,000 for. Not sure why he spent time looking for the City's car around his neighborhood except if he forgot where he parked it or lent it to someone else??

I'll add that many cities' Recreational program include services / classes for adults as well as youths. In this "6th Borough" of New York, forget about recreational programs for adults - they are almost non-existent.

Bottom line: Get rid of the incompetents in Recreation, hire people who truly want to improve the City (not just their own pockets), and get back to the job of creating and maintaining goods programs for your all JC Residents (youths and adults).

The Blimpie's on Central Ave. is probably one of the best remaining Blimpies and makes a good sub. (Forget about the one by Journal Sq.). If you want higher end, Andrea Salumeria on Central just won the "best hoagie/sub" in JC.

While I agree that, at times, the pool may be too warm, this is a COMMUNITY pool and, therefore is meant to be used by "arthritic elderly, for infants, and for water exercises for women who cannot swim" and for any other Jersey City resident who want to swim in accordance with the pool rules.

I have no problem if the Masters Team want to pay extra for EXTRA hours, but any time that would used for the Masters should NOT AFFECT or OVERLAP existing member hours (e.g., Master Team hours should be finished by 7AM or only begin after 8PM on weekdays). And, I must ask, if funding was so good, why did Stevens shut down the program?

Also my company offers insurance through VSP - I found that if anything is wrong with your vision their "free eye exam" does not cover you and instead your insurance is billed or you need to pay out of pocket. Thinking their coverage is crap - but curious of others feel the same or differently.

Anyone know what is being built on East side of JFK Blvd around Cliff (where the taxi place used to be)? Seems like a large bit of property that is being excavated.
