Re: Reservoir Use for 2008?????

They actually don't allow any boats there at all, It's just too small but my husband and I frequent the 7 lakes in New York State which is actually not too far. It's really beautiful and the fishing is great there. We have a small 12" boat. Of course we actually had to go and get licenses for NY as well which was about $40.00 each.
We do keep hearing about Lake Tamarack in Bergen County and plan on going there within the next week or 2. I'm not too sure how things work there yet but I'll be sure to let you know unless you get there 1st.

if all these condos like canco and the beacon would just lower there sales prices buy 15 - 20%,they would probably sell more units and faster.its better to sell 200 units at slightly less money, then sell 60 units and have more then half the place empty.

As far as North Hudson Park, you can only take certain fish such as perch or trout that's at least 15".
Bass are catch and release there. The rules are very strict and I always abide by them.

They also stock the lake there on a every 2 week basis and we often catch and release. On occassion we will take 2 to 4 perch home and once I caught a brown trout and rainbow trout which I released because they were undersized. I agree with you when it comes to the kids as I have 3 sons of my own.

You sound like a great fishing citizen! I only brought it up because there are so many shorts being kept from the river, many people are either ignorant or uncaring.

I'm glad to know about the NH park, my 9 y/o son's a fishing fiend too, and lacks the patience for Hudson baitsoaking. Do you know if they allow you to put in a canoe there?

Found another one of the waterfront listed as on top of the World Trade Center Pre-Goldman Sachs

This one is interesting because of what is not in the photo. No Columbus Tower, no Grove Pointe, no Gulls Cove. no Trump; they are all nascent stubs of towers. LHN is well under way in the background, so maybe 2006.

Family Images has a handful of photos from Jersey City and hudson County, a mixed assortment.

I hope the reservoir is opened at some point as well.

Security is an important concern, as it always is in Jersey City. We need to be sure that the fishing hole does not become a dumping ground or a hangout.

It would be wonderful to have a local place to take the children. The non existent police force in the Heights makes it difficult.

it's way overpriced for what it has to offer (which isn't much to begin with). knock the prices down 20-30 k and we'd be talking

Absolutely not, I change my mind based on who the candidate is. For McCain to say it, it instantly becomes acceptable.

I feel the need to say it again, I dislike McCain ALMOST as much as I dislike Obama.

Let's face it, canco is not exactly in either the most desire-able or convenient location. It's actually quite a hike to the PATH

I dont "get talking points" from anywhere...especially not Fox. My point here is that nationalized health care and trying to force big companies to "pay back" the community are socialist ideas. Does that mean Obama = Socialist? No? Does that mean that his ideas lean too far towards Socialist ideas for my taste? Yes.

I think that there are too many instances where things are taken in black and white terms and if someone is a Republican/Democrat/Socialist...or whatever label you want to use, then there is no possible way they could be anything else. For example...the common thought process lately that all republicans = GWB and therefore = bad....all because of a label for what the party supposedly stands for.

So when I say Obama's policies are "socialist enough for me" I am not saying he is 100% socialist, but I am saying that the ideas he has presented so far lean too far towards that ideology for me to be comfortable with.

Hyperbole and gross distortion is the lingua franca on here. Slyng had a great post some time back about someone trying to claim that BHO was a socialist and summarily ripped him/her a new one.

Last time I checked, the people in several "socialist market" countries were happy and not complaining about widespread access to healthcare and low unemployment levels

Re: Car being broken in?

This happened to me a lot 2 summers ago. I had a 1997 Honda Accord. My car was broken into about 3 times and there was nothing in it. I had the club too. Finally they stole the car (got the club off and everything) and it was found near Wayen Street. I was usually parked behind a brand Lexus or BMW....

At that time a lot of Honda's were being broken into. The older Honda's are easier to break into and a sought after car. There is a tab on the outside of the window that makes it easy to seperate it from the car. You can then get some type of device in to unlock....or you can smash the window.

It really stinks. In my opinion as soon as it gets warmer car thefts and break ins are on the rise. I hope you report it to the police (not a great experience for me)....and you should also tell the Neighborhood Watch who really does care.

Two track fires in a month? Is this no trash can policy really working for them?

While I see that even when trash cans are available some people will still litter I don't think that their behavior should dictate policy for the rest of us. When given the opportunity I still believe will do the right thing.

Why not try the reverse and have recycling and trash receptacles that are convenient and help improve the environment of the station. It seems too often the comfort and convenience of the customer is the last thing the PA considers when setting policy.

There are great old photos of Jersey City on the Library of Congress's site (www.loc.gov). I believe you'll be able to find them in various locations in their digital collections.

You can also check out The New York Public Library's digital collections (www.nypl.org).

Good luck!

The fact that there are 50 million people without insurance is a f_cking disgrace, and what's funny is that most Americans are too stupid to realize they are being screwed including some of those 50 million without insurance. The only reason 50 million people (I'm taking your number at face value) don't have health insurance is:

a. Health insurance is very expensive
b. As a consequence of a., these people decide not to buy it.

I had my grandfather over last month, and he lived on Montgomery back in 1930 or so, went to Dickenson High School, and he was very shocked how downtown has changed. It is impossible to get any photos on the web.

Obama on the Nile
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
Published: June 11, 2008
Cairo

This column will probably get Barack Obama in trouble, but that?s not my problem. I cannot tell a lie: Many Egyptians and other Arab Muslims really like him and hope that he wins the presidency.

I have had a chance to observe several U.S. elections from abroad, but it has been unusually revealing to be in Egypt as Barack Hussein Obama became the Democrats? nominee for president of the United States.

While Obama, who was raised a Christian, is constantly assuring Americans that he is not a Muslim, Egyptians are amazed, excited and agog that America might elect a black man whose father?s family was of Muslim heritage. They don?t really understand Obama?s family tree, but what they do know is that if America ? despite being attacked by Muslim militants on 9/11 ? were to elect as its president some guy with the middle name ?Hussein,? it would mark a sea change in America-Muslim world relations.

Every interview seems to end with the person I was interviewing asking me: ?Now, can I ask you a question? Obama? Do you think they will let him win?? (It?s always ?let him win? not just ?win.?)

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Democrats? nomination of Obama as their candidate for president has done more to improve America?s image abroad ? an image dented by the Iraq war, President Bush?s invocation of a post-9/11 ?crusade,? Abu Ghraib, Guant?namo Bay and the xenophobic opposition to Dubai Ports World managing U.S. harbors ? than the entire Bush public diplomacy effort for seven years.

Of course, Egyptians still have their grievances with America, and will in the future no matter who is president ? and we?ve got a few grievances with them, too. But every once in a while, America does something so radical, so out of the ordinary ? something that old, encrusted, traditional societies like those in the Middle East could simply never imagine ? that it revives America?s revolutionary ?brand? overseas in a way that no diplomat could have designed or planned.

I just had dinner at a Nile-side restaurant with two Egyptian officials and a businessman, and one of them quoted one of his children as asking: ?Could something like this ever happen in Egypt?? And the answer from everyone at the table was, of course, ?no.? It couldn?t happen anywhere in this region. Could a Copt become president of Egypt? Not a chance. Could a Shiite become the leader of Saudi Arabia? Not in a hundred years. A Bahai president of Iran? In your dreams. Here, the past always buries the future, not the other way around.

These Egyptian officials were particularly excited about Obama?s nomination because it might mean that being labeled a ?pro-American? reformer is no longer an insult here, as it has been in recent years. As one U.S. diplomat put it to me: Obama?s demeanor suggests to foreigners that he would not only listen to what they have to say but might even take it into account. They anticipate that a U.S. president who spent part of his life looking at America from the outside in ? as John McCain did while a P.O.W. in Vietnam ? will be much more attuned to global trends.

My colleague Michael Slackman, The Times?s bureau chief in Cairo, told me about a recent encounter he had with a worker at Cairo?s famed Blue Mosque: ?Gamal Abdul Halem was sitting on a green carpet. When he saw we were Americans, he said: ?Hillary-Obama tied?? in thick, broken English. He told me that he lived in the Nile Delta, traveling two hours one way everyday to get to work, and still he found time to keep up with the race. He didn?t have anything to say bad about Hillary but felt that Obama would be much better because he is dark-skinned, like him, and because he has Muslim heritage. ?For me and my family and friends, we want Obama,? he said. ?We all like what he is saying.? ?

Yes, all of this Obama-mania is excessive and will inevitably be punctured should he win the presidency and start making tough calls or big mistakes. For now, though, what it reveals is how much many foreigners, after all the acrimony of the Bush years, still hunger for the ?idea of America? ? this open, optimistic, and, indeed, revolutionary, place so radically different from their own societies.

In his history of 19th-century America, ?What Hath God Wrought,? Daniel Walker Howe quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson as telling a meeting of the Mercantile Library Association in 1844 that ?America is the country of the future. It is a country of beginnings, of projects, of vast designs and expectations.?

That?s the America that got swallowed by the war on terrorism. And it?s the America that many people want back. I have no idea whether Obama will win in November. Whether he does or doesn?t, though, the mere fact of his nomination has done something very important. We?ve surprised ourselves and surprised the world and, in so doing, reminded everyone that we are still a country of new beginnings.

Hi,

If you have a nice car, I suggest that you go park it at New Port Mall. It's a 10 minutes walk but for 80$ per month indoor parking, you can't go wrong.

Back to the subject, what's up with the reservoir? The website has not been updated with any open days for this summer. Has the deal with the city been broken?

Ninasdogwalk: While I don't know much about North Bergen park, and love to eat my catch as much as anyone, I hope you will release what you catch at our reservoir, I don't think it's large enough for everyone to keep what they catch. There would very quickly be no fish left, and that would be sad for the kids who are thrilled to catch fish in their neighborhood.
