Photo brings back the old days

by The Jersey Journal

Today's New York Times features two photos of the historic, landmark Loew's Jersey Theater in Jersey City's Journal Square.

One photo can be viewed online, where the photographer describes the equipment he used to evoke the past in his breathtaking shot of the old movie palace's interior.

Another page includes one comment (so far) reminiscing about happy times spent at the theater and others like it in the area so many years ago.

=====================================

http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2008 ... 11_LENS_SLIDESHOW_15.html

The Loew's Jersey Theater in Jersey City was once threatened with demolition but has been brought back to life through renovation.

A Word From the Photographer:

"When I started this project, I decided to use a slow, fine grain, black and white film and combine it with an old fashioned style developer. The goal was to try and recreate a look that has all but disappeared since the arrival of digital cameras. Many of the films that I would have considered are sadly no longer made. I settled on Efke 25, which is made in Croatia and Fuji Neopan. For the developer I chose Rodinal developer, diluted 1:50. Kelton Lab in NYC developed the film and Gotham Imaging did the scans and prints. Most of the pictures have been taken with a Cambo DS 4?5 camera with a Schneider 72 mm lens."

Archival pigment prints of these photographs can be purchased in the New York Times Store.

Oh la la!

Your French-infused spelling of Merseles Street in Jersey City made me smile.

I vote that we change the name to Marseilles Street!

C'est magnifique! :):):)

City nixes rapper's school appearance, citing 'violent' lyrics

Wednesday, June 11, 2008
By PAUL KOEPP
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The invitation for rapper and hip-hop mogul Jim Jones to perform at a Jersey City school on National HIV Testing Day has been rescinded, with city officials saying his work promotes violence.

Officials say they nixed the invite from the city Department of Health and Human Services when they read some of the lyrics of the Harlem native, who inspired the New York Giants' "jump shot" celebration with the music video for his hit song "We Fly High."

Jones, who is also the co-CEO of Diplomat Records, has spoken out about losing his father and uncle to AIDS.

City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said that while the June 27 event has been canceled, the city is offering free HIV testing at several locations through the end of June.

"The City of Jersey City is proud to sponsor events during the month of June that encourage our residents to be tested for HIV/AIDS," Morrill said. "When it was brought to the attention of the Mayor's Office staff that Mr. Jones was the star of the concert, a careful review of Mr. Jones' lyrics was done and ultimately the decision was made to cancel the show.

"Mayor (Jerramiah) Healy has always been a proponent of positive outlets for our youth and a strong gun control advocate," she added. "Mr. Jones' lyrics speak of violence to women and police, of the drug trade and guns, and other activities that Mayor Healy could not endorse by sponsoring an event featuring Mr. Jones."

Morrill did not cite any specific lyrics.

A representative for the rapper said he was not aware the event had been canceled but had no further comment. Morrill said the Health Department notified Jones' representatives.

According to published reports, a bodyguard for Jones was arrested in a June 1 confrontation with police following a surprise performance at Giants Stadium where the rapper's entourage made onstage references to Sean Bell, the Queens man slain by New York City cops in 2006.

The incident was not a factor in the city's decision, Morrill said.

Jones and rappers close to him have also been criticized for urging listeners not to cooperate with police by "snitching" on others. And in one interview, Jones said Louis Farrakhan was "like the pope to the black people."

Yes, Germany does have a higher unemployment rate but you don't have the obscene poverty that you have in the US.

Also, an I point out that the employment rate in the US is not so fantastic relative to other rich countries.

Denmark : 4.8%
Netherlands : 4.7%
Sweden : 7.8%
UK : 4.7%
Austria : 5.2%
Finland : 8.4%
Ireland : 4.3%
Portugal : 7.6%
Germany : 9.5%
Spain : 9.2%
France : 9.7%
Belgium : 8.4%
Greece : 9.8%
Italy : 7.7%
Hungary : 7.2%
Poland : 17.7%

Turkey : 10.3%
USA : 5.1% (in 2004)
Japan : 4.4% (in 2004)

Have you ever been to one of those south Florida "retirement condo" developments? It's not exactly a lake cottage in the Poconos. They are like 6 floor apartment buildings clustered around small lakes in the middle of giant lawns infested with fire ants. The lakes are there because it was a swamp to begin with and they needed to figure out what to do with the water. They do get stocked with largemouth and peacock bass, and we saw some gar in the attached canal. A neighbor of my folks told me he caught some bass upwards of 5lbs on nightcrawlers, but I'm still trying to figure out how to catch more than sunnies there.

The fire ant thing I thought was old folks being overcautious, "don't sit on the grass", until I put my foot in a hill of them. HOLY CRAP!! That mistake stayed with me for MONTHS! Those things make me believe in God, an evil God.

When I bought my new (used) car this fall, I asked about having an alarm installed and the dealer recommended I not do it, since the alarm really does nothing. People are so immune to the noise that it really doesn't help at all. Instead he recommended a lo-jack, so at least if it was stolen, they could track it.

Yes I've visited them all many times and worked in them all except Iceland. Employment in Germany the largest country mentioned falls short of US rates by some distance.

Iceland has not much more than 300,000 residents. It has the 132nd largest economy by country.

Thanks, that looks like it's worth a trip. We've been going to Round Valley State Park, about a 45 minute drive. Haven't gotten a bass there yet, but my son can't get enough of the sunnies. I've even tried out my minimal flyfishing skills on them. Supposedly a number of state record fish have come out of that lake.

The license thing gets me crazy, there should be some kind of reciprocity. I frequently visit NY, PA, CT, FL and OR. I could spend hundreds on licenses! Usually I just play fishing coach to my son, although at my parents condo in FL I feel pretty safe since the pond is on private property.

Jim Jones Performance Cancelled Over Violent Lyrics

6/11/2008
by Black widow

New Jersey city officials have reportedly canceled a HIV Testing Day concert which was supposed to be headlined by Jim Jones at a city school because of the rapper's lyrics.

According to The New Jersey Journal, Jones was slated to perform at a city school on National HIV Testing Day (June 27) but city officials were not too impressed with the rapper's lyrical content.

"When it was brought to the attention of the Mayor's Office staff that Mr. Jones was the star of the concert, a careful review of Mr. Jones' lyrics was done and ultimately the decision was made to cancel the show," said City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.

"Mr. Jones' lyrics speak of violence to women and police, of the drug trade and guns, and other activities that Mayor Healy could not endorse by sponsoring an event featuring Mr. Jones," she added.

Daily Hip-Hop News:
Jim Jones High School Performance Nixed For "Violent Lyrics"

written by Brandi Hopper
Wednesday - June 11, 2008

A Jersey City school recently rescinded an offer to have Jim Jones, who has been vocal about his uncle's AIDS death, perform on National HIV Testing Day.

City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said the Harlem hustler's lyrics were to blame.

"When it was brought to the attention of the Mayor's Office staff that Mr. Jones was the star of the concert, a careful review of Mr. Jones' lyrics was done and ultimately the decision was made to cancel the show," she explained to the Jersey Journal.

"Mr. Jones' lyrics speak of violence to women and police, of the drug trade and guns, and other activities that Mayor Healy could not endorse by sponsoring an event featuring Mr. Jones," Morrill continued.

A rep for Jones said he hadn't been notified about the cancelled performance though Morrill said the Health Department has let him know.

In recent Jim Jones news, a member of his camp was arrested after the Summer Jam concert June 2 for tussling with police.

I just had dinner at a Nile-side restaurant with two Egyptian officials and a businessman, and one of them quoted one of his children as asking: ?Could something like this ever happen in Egypt?? And the answer from everyone at the table was, of course, ?no.? It couldn?t happen anywhere in this region. Could a Copt become president of Egypt? Not a chance. We looked at Canco. seems like great plan. but it is WAY overpriced. thye are somehwat far from the Path and they have ammneities that no one rwally needs. If they lowered prices, they would sell. but that means the owner would get less $$$. He would ratnjer the city take the hit.

Instead of $350,000 for a nice 1 bdrm w/parkng..how about $300??? What about the people that are supposed to move in??? They are screwed.

Johnson resigns from team vetting Obama veep

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer

Jim Johnson, a manager of Democrat Barack Obama's vice presidential search team, resigned Wednesday amid criticism over his personal loan deals.

"Jim did not want to distract in any way from the very important task of gathering information about my vice presidential nominee, so he has made a decision to step aside that I accept," Obama said in a statement. "We have a very good selection process under way, and I am confident that it will produce a number of highly qualified candidates for me to choose from in the weeks ahead. I remain grateful to Jim for his service and his efforts in this process."

Johnson, the former chairman of mortgage lender Fannie Mae, received loans with the help of the CEO of Countrywide Financial Corp., which is part of a federal investigation in the midst of the subprime mortgage crisis. The story was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain had accused Obama of hypocrisy for speaking out against Countrywide's tactics while his vetter got favorable rates on three home mortgages totaling $1.7 million.

Johnson served on Obama's vetting team with two prominent Democratic attorneys ? former Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder and Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy.

Johnson brought the most experience to the vetting team, having filled the same role for Democratic nominees John Kerry in 2004 and Walter Mondale in 1984. He and Holder had been holding meetings this week with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to seek their input on possible running mate candidates.

The campaign declined to answer questions about whether Johnson would be replaced or the vetting process will be left to Holder and Kennedy, who have not been involved in a vice presidential search before.

On Tuesday, Obama said Johnson had a "discrete task" and was performing it well. He suggested the Countrywide connection was not a problem since Johnson was an unpaid volunteer and hadn't been assigned to work in a future administration.

"I am not vetting my V.P. search committee for their mortgages," Obama said at the time.

While promises to hire Jersey City construction workers should always be a condition for the grant of any abatement, it's a grossly insufficient trade off to justify revisiting the already agreed upon abatement. In this context, it's not a "shakedown," but more accurately, it's a cheap "give away" that the developer might willingly pay -- as the value of any renegotiated abatement is worth millions more to them. In essence, it's another variant form of pay-to-play.

All the best.

Geoff

Do the tax payers really care if the job is being done by locals. It's union so they get the last say in the matter. How about local developers. I believe the residents get a tax break as well when property taxes are being paid. Also when seeking a new home porential owners can seek a tax abatement.

The developer erred in the original negotiation, since the first phase of the Beacon is already receiving this 10% rate ..... putting Canco at a competitive disadvantage.

The reduction translates directly into lower payments for the prospective buyers, making the development more desirable (perception wise).

You'd have to tell the developers to stop giving "contributions" to JC officials, but then the developers would never get anything done in a timely fashion.
